CNA5 days ago
Come 2026, there will be more reasons for you to visit Japan. On Tuesday (Jul 22), The Pokemon Company provided an update on its upcoming theme park PokePark Kanto – a venture that was first announced in 2023.
PokePark Kanto is set to be the "first permanent outdoor Pokemon attraction" and will be housed within the Yomiuriland amusement park in Tokyo, Japan.
Spanning over 26,000 sqm, PokePark Kanto will be made of two distinct areas: Sedge Town and Pokemon Forest.
You'll finally know what it's like to explore a town in the Pokemon universe at Sedge Town. Here, you can visit iconic fixtures of the franchise, including the Pokemon Center, a Poke Mart and even a Pokemon Gym.
The area will even have a fountain, as well as shops selling merchandise.
If you want to witness Pokemon in their natural habitat, head to Pokemon Forest which spans nearly 500 metres in length. The area comprises many different terrains, including hilly paths, tall grass, tunnels and rocky trails – just like in the games.
In a statement, Junichi Masuda, chief creative fellow at The Pokémon Company, said: "Pokemon has grown so much thanks to lots of support from many people. So we wanted to make a place everyone could come together and enjoy.
"A space where Pokemon will always be and where people and Pokemon can have fun together. That wish prompted us to begin work on a world where Pokemon truly exist."
PokePark Kanto is set to open in early 2026, with advanced ticket sales expected to begin late this year.

Husband of late Barbie Hsu said to visit her grave almost daily

It has been almost six months since Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu died from influenza-related pneumonia while holidaying in Japan with her family. She was 48. However, it seems the sting of her sudden departure still haunts her loved ones, whom she left behind. According to reports, her widowed husband, South Korean rapper DJ Koo aka Koo Jun-yup, has been diligently visiting her grave at the Chin Pao San Cemetery in New Taipei, Taiwan, even when it's raining heavily or scorching hot. The rumour was confirmed by a netizen on Sunday (Jul 27) when he gave a ride to a Hsu fan who wanted to lay flowers at her grave. When they arrived, they saw a man in a black tank top and cap sitting silently on a foldable chair in the middle of the cemetery, enduring the heat from the sun. Deeply tanned and visibly thinner, Koo quietly thanked the visitors for paying their respects to his late wife. 'He is the most devoted man I have ever seen. Honestly, the moment I saw him, I could feel the deep sadness radiating from the figure. I can't imagine the pain of losing your soulmate so suddenly,' said the netizen. According to ETtoday, Koo was spotted viewing properties in the area two months ago and is believed to be eyeing a unit at Four Seasons Garden, a newly completed development nearby. When contacted, the property developer declined to comment, while Hsu's mother said it was the first she had heard of it. Hsu and Koo first met and dated briefly in 1998 before their split. After 23 years, they reunited and got married in 2022.

New Demon Slayer movie breaks records in Japan

The latest movie adaptation of hit manga and anime series Demon Slayer is breaking records in Japan, becoming the fastest film to gross 10 billion yen (US$67 million), an industry body said. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle was released on Jul 18 and reached the 10 billion yen mark after eight days. The previous record-holder was the last installment of the series – Demon Slayer: Mugen Train – which hit that figure after 10 days in 2020, Kogyo Tsushinsha, which tracks movie sales, said on Monday (Jul 28). "We thank each and every fan who came to movie theatres and theatre staff who are delivering this to the fans," the movie's official X account said on Monday. Demon Slayer is originally a manga comic book series that has sold over 200 million copies worldwide, according to its publisher Shueisha. The work by artist Koyoharu Gotouge follows a combat adventure of boy hero Tanjiro Kamado who fights demons as he searches for a cure for his sister who has become one. The intense popularity of the series is rivalled only by global titles like Dragon Ball, Naruto and One Piece, Kyodo News said. The original manga series appeared in the popular Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 2016 to 2020.
