Man arrested for arson with intent to endanger life after fire outside Chinese restaurant
The fire was allegedly started outside Yang's Chinese restaurant on Penarth Road in Grangetown, at around 1.50am on June 2. Officers from South Wales Police attended the scene and arrested a man who remains in police custody at this time.
A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "Officers were called to an address on Penarth Road, Grangetown, at 1.50am yesterday (June 2) to reports of a fire.

"Officers attended and a man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody."

Artificial intelligence rollout for police forces to investigate grooming gangs
Artificial intelligence tools which have saved thousands of hours in investigations will be rolled out to all police forces to tackle grooming gangs. Officers across all 43 forces in England and Wales will gain access to the investigative technology as part of a £426,000 funding boost for the Tackling Organised Exploitation (TOEX) programme. The intelligence and technical experts support forces investigating complex cases such as organised exploitation of modern slavery, county lines and child sex abuse. Some 13 forces currently have access to their apps, which are said to have been used 12,500 times – saving more than £20 million and 16,000 hours for investigators. The expansion, announced by the Home Office, comes after Baroness Casey recommended a national police operation to review cold cases, in her rapid audit on grooming gangs published in June. Operation Beaconport has since been established, led by the National Crime Agency, and will be reviewing more than 1,200 closed cases of child sexual exploitation. Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips said: 'The sexual exploitation of children by grooming gangs is one of the most horrific crimes and we must punish perpetrators, provide justice for victims and survivors, and protect today's children from harm. 'Baroness Casey flagged the need to upgrade police information systems to improve investigations and safeguard children at risk. Today we are investing in these critical tools.' The technology being rolled out can translate large amounts of text in foreign languages from mobile phones seized by police, and analyse a mass of digital data to find patterns and relationships between suspects. NCA director general Graeme Biggar said providing reassurance to victims and their families has been a main focus of the national policing operation since June. He added: 'We must and will ensure their voices are heard and collectively, we will restore confidence that the law enforcement response to child sexual exploitation is without fear or favour, is evidence based and not undermined by fears of inflaming community tensions.' The Home Secretary has also written to police forces to make sure they are collecting ethnicity data as recommended by Baroness Casey. The crossbench peer's report found the lack of data showing the ethnicity and nationality of sex offenders in grooming gangs is 'a major failing over the last decade or more'. The audit found that officials had dodged the issue of ethnicity among the groups of sex offenders for fear of being called racist, but there were enough convictions of Asian men 'to have warranted closer examination'. The Government has launched a national inquiry into the abuse and further details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

ICE agents flee arson attack in Washington state
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have escaped an arson attack at a federal office in Yakima, Washington, according to the Department of Homeland Security. A 'cowardly rioter' on Saturday threw a rock through a window of the ICE field office and then started a 'small fire' at the back of the building, DHS said in a statement Tuesday. No one was injured in the attack and law enforcement is investigating the incident as an act of arson. 'It is unclear if our brave ICE law enforcement were the targets of these violent acts. From comparisons to the modern-day Nazi gestapo to glorifying rioters, the violent rhetoric of sanctuary politicians is beyond the pale,' the DHS statement read. 'Secretary Noem has been clear: Anyone who seeks to harm law enforcement officers will be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.' The Independent has contacted DHS for more information on the incident. A photo, shared by DHS, shows smoke billowing over a fence and flames on the ground. Another image shows broken glass and a dented wall, with a rock lying on the ground. As detentions and deportations have become a fixture of Trump's second term, attacks against immigration authorities have been on the rise. ICE officials have faced a 830 percent increase in assaults from January 21 to July 14 compared with the same period in 2024, DHS announced last month. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin blamed Democrats, naming several high-profile lawmakers, for 'contributing to the surge in assaults of our ICE officers through their repeated vilification and demonization of ICE,' in a statement to The Independent . The New York Post first reported the incident. Last month, 11 people dressed in tactical gear executed what prosecutors called an 'organized attack' outside of an ICE detention center near Fort Worth, Texas. One of the alleged defendants fired 20 to 30 rounds at unarmed correctional officers who had stepped outside the facility, prosecutors say. Another allegedly shot an Alvarado police officer in the neck; he has since been discharged from the hospital. Ten of the 11 now face charges of attempted murder. On the campaign trail, President Donald Trump promised to deliver the 'largest deportation operation in American history.' As the Trump administration set a lofty target of 3,000 arrests per day, ICE's tactics — like plainclothes and masked agents arresting international students on the street — have drawn criticism and rattled communities across the country. Those tactics appear to change based on the state. In red states, about 60 percent of immigration arrests have taken place in prisons and jails, while 70 percent of arrests in blue states took place in the wider community, according to a CNN analysis.

Fire burns 2-unit home in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood
Firefighters battled a house fire that broke out Tuesday morning in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood. The one-alarm fire spread in a two-unit building in the 300 block of Arkansas Street. Two victims from the fire have been rescued, according to a social media post by the San Francisco Fire Department at about 9 a.m. The department also posted a video of the scene, showing firefighters outside a home with a burnt-out window on the second floor. A firefighter can be seen climbing a ladder to try and reach the upper levels of the home. The department advised the public to stay away from the area. There was no immediate word on what caused the fire.
