PITTSBURGH, July 14 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will announce $70 billion in artificial-intelligence and energy investments on Tuesday, according to a White House official and a person familiar with the initiatives. Trump will reveal details of these new initiatives at an event near Pittsburgh, where he will be joined by Republican Senator David McCormick, who is hosting the first Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit at Carnegie Mellon University. McCormick's office did not respond on Monday to requests for details of the announcements. The investments come from various industries that include new data centers and power grid upgrades and expansions, according to the White House official. Axios was the first to report the $70 billion figure.

xAI announces $200m US military deal after Grok chatbot had Nazi meltdown
The week after its Grok chatbot identified itself as 'MechaHitler' and generated antisemitic posts, Elon Musk's xAI firm announced a contract with the US Department of Defense worth nearly $200m. The deal is for developing and implementing artificial intelligence tools for the agency. The DoD on Monday also announced similar contracts with $200m ceilings with several other major US-based artificial intelligence developers, including Google, Anthropic and OpenAI. The agency is partnering with the General Services Administration to make these companies' AI tools available for use throughout the federal government. 'Leveraging commercially available solutions into an integrated capabilities approach will accelerate the use of advanced AI as part of our joint mission-essential tasks in our warfighting domain as well as intelligence, business, and enterprise information systems,' the US chief digital and AI officer Dr Doug Matty said in a statement. The contracts deepen the US military's ties with AI developers and are poised to expand the use of artificial intelligence within the US government after Musk's so-called 'department of government efficiency' (Doge) oversaw mass firings of workers throughout federal agencies. Until Musk's recent falling out with Donald Trump, the xAI founder was de facto leader of Doge as it gutted government agencies and in some cases pushed for departments to use the Grok chatbot. xAI's contract announcement comes after the company was forced to issue a public apology after Grok posted a string of responses on X last week that included promoting Nazi ideology and rape fantasies. The company claimed that it fixed the issue and subsequently unveiled its latest AI model with a $300 a month subscription for an advanced version of the tool. The DoD's contract will give xAI a boost of revenue as it seeks to compete with more established AI developers like OpenAI, which is led by Musk's former associate turned rival, Sam Altman. Musk has been heavily promoting xAI and attempting to use other parts of his tech empire to support its future, including having SpaceX invest $2bn into the startup, allowing it to acquire X, formerly, Twitter, and announcing on Sunday that Tesla shareholders will vote on their own investment in xAI. xAI announced the deal and the creation of what it calls 'Grok For Government' in a post on its website on Monday, detailing that in addition to its publicly available products it would create custom AI-powered applications for potential use in healthcare, national security and other public services. 'Under the umbrella of Grok For Government, we will be bringing all of our world-class AI tools to federal, local, state, and national security customers,' xAI said in a statement on its website. 'These customers will be able to use the Grok family of products to accelerate America – from making everyday government services faster and more efficient to using AI to address unsolved problems in fundamental science and technology.' Intel quietly quadruples number of layoffs
A once-dominant tech company is undergoing another mass layoff. Intel is cutting thousands of jobs as it faces mounting pressure from tech competitors in artificial intelligence. The chipmaking giant — which makes processors that power millions of Dell, HP, and Lenovo computers — filed paperwork on July 10 indicating it would lay off nearly 2,400 employees in Oregon. That's a major escalation from just three days earlier, when the company filed WARN paperwork that said only 529 employees were losing their jobs. The Oregon layoffs are likely part of a broader belt-tightening at the tech giant. In mid-June, the company said it was hoping to slash about 15 to 20 percent of its workforce. With Intel employing 109,000 globally, that would mean 16,350 to 21,800 staffers would lose their job. Recently, Intel reported employing more than 20,000 workers at its plant in Hillsboro, Oregon. 'We are taking steps to become a leaner, faster and more efficient company,' the company told 'Removing organizational complexity and empowering our engineers will enable us to better serve the needs of our customers and strengthen our execution.' Intel declined to comment on which positions are most affected in the latest round of layoffs, but said the cuts were communicated with the utmost 'care and respect' for employees. This marks the second major round of job cuts at Intel in the past two years. In December, the company ousted its CEO while nixing 15 percent of its workforce in 2024. The job cuts are coming on the back of a turbulent period for the Silicon Valley stalwart. Intel has faced mounting competition from faster-moving rivals and criticism for falling behind in the AI race. Chipmakers like AMD, IBM, TSMC, and especially NVIDIA have surged ahead by investing aggressively in processors built specifically for artificial intelligence workloads. NVIDIA — whose chips now power nearly 80 percent of AI platforms — recently became the first company to ever reach a valuation over $4 trillion. Meanwhile, Intel's stock has slumped in the past year. Shares have fallen more than 32 percent, though the company has rebounded somewhat in 2025, with stock prices climbing 15 percent since January. Part of the resurgence comes from positive relationships with Washington. Intel is receiving billions in federal support through the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which aims to restore domestic manufacturing of strategically critical technologies. The company is awaiting $6.9 billion in government grants to support factory builds and expansion in Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, and Ohio. Intel has delayed construction of its Ohio factory until 2030. Still, the company's balance sheets are deep in the red. In the first quarter of 2025, Intel posted an $821 million loss. Its next earnings report is expected next week. Intel is joined by a list of tech and manufacturing giants that are slimming down their workforces because of AI.
