Eight dead and 16 injured in KZN mother's day car crash
A tow truck allegedly hit a Hyundai H100 LDV from behind on the N2 near Empangeni while it was transporting 24 Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members from their place of worship to the Dukuduku/Mtubatuba area in KZN
RTMC officials and police are investigating the cause of the accident, and Newzroom Afrika reported that they arrested the tow truck driver.
According to the Citizen, KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, offered his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the Zion Christian Church. He assembled a team to liaise with the church and the families during this difficult time.
Duma also instructed the Road Traffic Inspectorate to stay in contact with the Road Traffic Management Corporation and ensure they conduct a full investigation into the accident. He committed to keeping the people of KZN updated as the situation develops.
Over the past three weeks, Gqeberha has been rocked by a wave of kidnappings, with at least five cases reported, according to The South African . The abductions have left residents worried and raised concerns about safety in the city.
In the latest incident on Friday, 9 May 2025, five suspects allegedly kidnapped a 44-year-old businessman at around 10:00. The attackers allegedly pulled the man from his BMW outside his business premises on Darling Street in North End.

Bloemfontein woman convicted after pitbull kills young boy
A 43-year-old woman from Bloemfontein has been convicted after her Pitbull mauled an 8-year-old boy to death. The Bloemfontein Regional Court found Keabetswe Moroane guilty of culpable homicide. This comes after Moroane's Pitbull dog mauled her neighbour's 8-year-old son to death on 12 November 2022. According to a media statement by the NPA, Moroane owned three dogs. One of the dogs, a Pitbull, had a known history of aggressive behaviour. Residents reported that it terrorised the neighbourhood on numerous occasions. On 12 November 2022, the Pitbull allegedly broke out and entered the neighbours' property. The dog reportedly went into the garage, where the boy was playing, and attacked him. The child died at the scene from severe injuries. The NPA argued that Moroane acted negligently given the complaints from various community members. The court stated that she had a duty to protect the residents from potential harm but failed to care. The court postponed the case until 2 September 2025 for sentencing. The NPA said that this case serves as a reminder and warning to dog owners. It said that owners should consider the danger animals pose. The NPA stated that dog owners have a legal responsibility to ensure that the individuals around them are safe 'When negligence results in injury or death, the justice system must act decisively to protect the public and hold the responsible parties accountable,' the statement said. OMO-gosh! SAPS officers bust for looting washing powder
Just when you thought South Africa had run out of plot twists, Limpopo said: 'Hold my Surf'. In the cleanest scandal of the year, two SAPS officers and a police station cleaner have been bust for looting washing powder from a crashed delivery truck – and yes, they used a marked police van as their getaway car. Because nothing says 'totally not suspicious' like driving off with a boot full of OMO while your blue lights are flashing. According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba (probably resisting the urge to facepalm), the trio went full telenovela in Modimolle when they allegedly decided to swap crime-fighting for powder-snatching. The stolen goods? Recovered from one of the officer's homes. Because, of course, where else would you hide industrial quantities of detergent? It gets better – the station cleaner was in on it too. Because teamwork makes the dream (or in this case, the laundry) work. All three appeared in court on Monday, where they reportedly came clean. The case was postponed to Friday, 25 July for a formal bail application. SAPS top brass were understandably not amused. Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe condemned the act, calling it a betrayal of public trust. Translation: 'Are you flipping kidding me?' Moral of the story? SA-registered truck involved in deadly Zimbabwe crash that killed 17
At least 17 people died on Tuesday after a South African-registered haulage truck collided with a commuter omnibus in Zimbabwe. The incident occurred near Manyame River Bridge on the road linking Harare and Chitungwiza. ZimLive reports that the South Africa-registered truck was travelling to Harare while the commuter omnibus was headed for St Mary's in Chitungwiza. According to witnesses, the truck veered into oncoming traffic as it tried to avoid hitting a Honda Fit in its lane. Moments later, the South African-registered truck crashed into the commuter omnibus, crushing it under its weight. Zimbabwe national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed that all 17 victims, including some pedestrians, died at the scene of the crash. 'The ZRP confirms a road traffic accident which occurred this morning (on Tuesday) along Chitungwiza Road involving a haulage truck and a kombi,' Nyathi said in a statement. 'The police urge the media and public to be patient as police officers are currently attending the scene. More details will be released in due course.'
