Japanese scientists have developed a universal artificial blood substitute that can revolutionize global healthcare and address critical blood shortage challenges. Artificial blood is an invention, which serves as a substitute for real blood.
With the World Health Organisation (WHO) highlighting a global blood shortage, this innovation could play a very crucial role in saving lives during trauma, surgeries, emergencies, and other medical procedures, if proven successful.
If the clinical trials prove successful, Japan could become the first-country to deploy artificial blood for real-world medical care by 2030.
Japan creates virus-free artificial blood that can be stored for years
Professor Hiromi Sakai at Nara Medical University has pioneered this approach, creating stable, virus-free artificial red blood cells that eliminate the need for blood type matching. According to The Japan Times, artificial red blood cells are produced by extracting hemoglobin, which carries oxygen, from donated blood and wrapping it with an artificial lipid membrane, according to the team. The artificial cells have a purplish color, unlike the common red color of blood, as they are made in a way that they do not oxidize until they are used
The artificial blood technology centers on hemoglobin vesicles, small artificial blood cells that extract hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule, from expired donor blood and encase it in protective shells.
Artificial blood offers several benefits over traditional blood donations. It eliminates the need for compatible testing, making it very useful in emergency situations, and can be stored at room temperature for up to two years, far exceeding the short shelf life of donated blood.
Revolutionizing global healthcare
This technology could improve healthcare by eliminating the compatibility issues and blood shortages especially in remote areas where blood storage and matching are challenging.
Unlike donated blood, these artificial cells have no blood type, eliminating the need for compatibility testing and making them valuable in emergencies. It represents a significant humanitarian breakthrough, promising to ensure blood availability anywhere, anytime, and transforming global healthcare systems.
Trial design
The trial will initially focus on testing safety before moving to broader performance and efficacy targets. It will administer 100 to 400 milliliters of artificial blood on volunteers. The research represents rapid progress of Japan's artificial blood development program. Their program began with small-scale studies demonstrating that these tiny artificial cells could safely deliver oxygen as normal blood cells do.

The Excel 3T MRI system, integrated with artificial intelligence to optimise speed, clarity and patient experience is capable of slashing scan times by nearly half and delivering sharper imaging using AI-based reconstruction and real-time correction algorithms. With specialisation in cardiac, neuro and musculoskeletal imaging, it is positioned to meet growing demand for precision-led diagnostics in urban India, particularly for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The newly installed Excel 3T MRI scanner is powered by artificial intelligence systems that significantly improve imaging resolution while reducing scan time. Cardiac MRI scans, which traditionally took over an hour can now be completed in 30–40 minutes, thanks to real-time motion correction, compressed sensing algorithms and AI-guided image reconstruction. These features not only improve efficiency but also enhance the patient experience, particularly for the elderly, children, and those with claustrophobia. 'AI is no longer a futuristic concept—it's now a practical clinical tool,' said Dr. Harsh Mahajan, Founder & Chairman of Mahajan Imaging & Labs. 'Our goal is to introduce a new model for diagnostics, where cutting-edge AI supports better diagnosis while the patient remains at the centre of care.' Beyond comfort, the AI-integrated system enhances diagnostic confidence, he said, adding that by reducing artefacts and improving signal-to-noise ratios by up to 50%, the system delivers crisper, more accurate images. 'This is particularly crucial in cardiac MRI, where early detection of subtle functional or structural abnormalities can alter treatment outcomes dramatically. Meeting India's growing diagnostic burden India's health system is under increasing pressure from a rising tide of NCDs. According to the World Health Organisation, 63% of all deaths in India are caused by non-communicable diseases, with 27% due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) alone. Alarmingly, CVD accounts for 45% of deaths among those aged 40 to 69, and Indians experience heart disease nearly a decade earlier than their Western counterparts. Despite this, access to high-quality diagnostic tools remains unequal. That's where AI-enhanced systems hold promise. 'In high-burden countries like India, where clinical manpower is limited and diagnostic delays are common, AI can support faster image interpretation, automate repetitive tasks and reduce error rates,' said a Delhi-based preventive cardiology expert. Moreover, AI's potential to triage large volumes of data, flag anomalies and assist radiologists in identifying patterns offers a practical solution to India's stretched healthcare workforce. A model for the future? The Delhi government is keen to encourage more public-private partnerships in advanced healthcare. Speaking at the event, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said: 'The rise of NCDs, especially cardiac disease, is alarming. We are ensuring that all residents of Delhi have access to affordable diagnostics. I urge more providers to come forward and contribute to this transformation.' 'We want to continue to be at the forefront of quality focused Integrated Diagnostics in Delhi NCR and North India. The video has garnered over twelve thousand likes so far. In the clip, Ahuja highlighted that the popular Japanese-origin super tea is gaining ground across Indian farmlands. With the bulk of buyers, like cafes, paying between Rs 3500 and Rs 20000 per kilo, and D2C brands selling 50g packs for up to Rs 1500, matcha is quickly becoming one of the most lucrative crops on the block. But what's driving this sudden surge? And is it even sustainable? Let's understand. Why does matcha sell for Rs 20,000 per kilo in India? Matcha is an expensive tea—usually ₹20,000 per kilogram—because of the intensive labour in cultivation and processing. "While regular green tea is exposed to the sun for its entire lifetime, matcha is shaded from the sun for weeks prior to harvesting, which leads to higher chlorophyll content and a higher amino acid level of L-theanine," says Dr. Shrey Srivastava, Founder of Doctors on Duty (DOD). According to Dr. Srivastava, "Leaves are hand-harvested, steamed, dried, and finally ground into a fine powder by manual stone mills—a long, labour-intensive process. The careful manufacture produces a high-quality product containing plenty of antioxidants, flavour, and nutrients." World demand for matcha has gained momentum due to its health advantages, such as heightened metabolism, detoxification, enhanced alertness, and long-lasting energy without the crash of caffeine. It is now broadly incorporated not only in tea but also in lattes, smoothies, and sweets. Demand for Matcha cultivation has spiked in India Indian farmers have begun planting matcha owing to increased global demand and its high price in the market. 'Previously cultivated in Japan, matcha is a green tea leaf powder, which is prepared from specially cultivated green tea leaves that are high in antioxidants and health factors. Where favourable climatic conditions exist, such as in Assam, Darjeeling, and Nilgiris, Indian farmers are considering matcha as a value crop," Dr. Bhumesh Tygai, Senior Consultant-Internal Medicine, Sharda Hospital. Farming advice, better methods of cultivation, and export avenues have also contributed to this phenomenon. "Moreover, the growing consciousness of health and organic food demand domestically and abroad is prompting Indian farmers to diversify and try their hand at new crops such as matcha," he added. Why have Indian farmers also started cultivating matcha? What's the trigger? Indian farmers, particularly from states such as Assam, Nilgiris, and a portion of Himachal Pradesh, have felt the monetary value of the crop. Favourable climatic conditions and growing international demand have pushed farmers to opt for the cultivation of matcha as a high-value crop against conventional tea. "Incentives from the government, application of organic farming, and growing concern about world tea markets have also prompted Indian farmers to experiment with diversification and tap matcha's value segment," says Dr. Srivastava.
