Turkey's top defence official meets Bangladesh's Yunus: Military co-operation discussed; second bilateral meet in a year

Time of India8 hours ago
Turkey's top defence industry official met Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and senior military leadership on Tuesday in a high-level push to expand defence cooperation between the two countries.
The visit marks Ankara's growing engagement with Dhaka amid Bangladesh's efforts to diversify its defence partnerships.
'Haluk Gorgun, Secretary of Turkey's Defence Industries, arrived in Dhaka on a regular Turkish Air flight early in the morning,' a senior Bangladeshi official said. He added, 'Earlier, top Bangladeshi military officials visited Turkey. This is the return visit. Various issues including technology transfer will be discussed.'
According to the Bangladesh Army, Gorgun paid a courtesy call on Army Chief General Waqar-us-Zaman at Army Headquarters. 'Secretary of Defence Industries of Turkiye H. E. Prof. Haluk Gorgun paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Army Staff at Army Headquarters today. During the meeting, along with an exchange of greetings, they discussed strengthening the existing defence cooperation between the two countries,' the Army said in a Facebook post.
'H.E. Secretary assured extended cooperation and support for the development of the defence industry in Bangladesh. CAS expressed his desire in producing various modern military equipment and developing defence technologies in Bangladesh in close cooperation with Turkiye,' it added.
The Turkish official also met the Navy Chief Admiral M. Nazmul Hasan and Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan. The Navy Chief hosted a lunch in his honour.
Gorgun later met Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna, according to the Chief Adviser's Press Wing.
The visit comes as Bangladesh ramps up its 'Forces Goal 2023' initiative, aiming to strengthen self-reliance in defence and reduce dependency on a single supplier. Traditionally reliant on Chinese arms, Bangladesh became the top buyer of Turkish defence exports in 2022, purchasing advanced drones and other weapons.
'Bangladesh purchases weapons including drones from Turkiye. There is a good understanding between the two countries in military cooperation. Cooperation is being strengthened in the current global situation,' former ambassador to Turkiye Mosud Mannan told ANI.

Trump administration seeks to ban China from buying US farms

The Trump administration has a message for China: Keep off the farm. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said Tuesday the administration will work with state lawmakers to ban sales of U.S. farmland to buyers from China and other countries of concern, citing national-security interests. Rollins, joined by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, said the government is ratcheting up scrutiny on existing land owned by Chinese buyers and is looking at ways to potentially claw back past purchases. 'We'll never let foreign adversaries control our land," said Rollins. State and federal lawmakers for years have warned that China and other countries could use U.S. farmland to facilitate spying or wield influence over the U.S. food supply chain. Chinese-owned entities hold nearly 300,000 acres—roughly 0.02%—of U.S. farmland, according to Agriculture Department data, an area about the size of Los Angeles. Republicans and Democrats alike have sought to curb foreign ownership of American farmland, at times seeking to increase government scrutiny of purchases and investments. Critics have raised fears that foreign owners could drive up land prices or sidestep environmental rules. China's government has played down such concerns as overblown. Representatives of China's embassy in Washington, D.C., had no immediate comment. Rollins said on Tuesday that U.S. farms are under threat from China and other countries that are trying to infiltrate American agricultural research and steal technology. 'No longer can foreign adversaries assume we aren't watching," Hegseth said. Some state and municipal lawmakers have taken steps in recent years to block China-backed investment or ownership in U.S. agriculture. The city of Grand Forks, N.D., in 2023 halted the construction of a Chinese-owned corn mill after a U.S. Air Force official said the planned $700 million facility could represent a national-security risk because of its proximity to a nearby base. Some China-based ownership of U.S. farmland involves prominent U.S. agriculture companies. Pork giant Smithfield Foods and seed and pesticide supplier Syngenta have both faced criticism from government officials and lawmakers because of their Chinese owners. Smithfield is majority-owned by Chinese pork company WH Group and Syngenta is a subsidiary of China National Chemical. The companies' American leaders have pushed back, saying their China-based owners have helped them invest in U.S. farmers and create jobs. Smithfield in the past represented roughly half of the U.S. farmland owned by Chinese entities, via its Hong Kong-based parent. Much of that had been tied up in hundreds of company-owned hog farms and processing plants, according to federal data. WH Group acquired Smithfield in 2013, aiming to harness its technology and expertise to boost WH's operations in China. Smithfield returned to the U.S. public markets earlier this year, raising roughly $500 million after listing its shares on the Nasdaq Stock Market. WH Group owns about 93% of Smithfield's shares. 'We're an American company, American management team and made in America," Smithfield Chief Executive Shane Smith said in an interview earlier this year. Smithfield last year sold more than 40,000 acres of its U.S. farmland, leaving it with roughly 85,000 acres. Shares of Smithfield fell about 1% on Tuesday. Syngenta, the largest pesticide seller in the U.S., has said it owns a small amount of land for research, development and regulatory trials. The company, which employs about 4,000 people in the U.S., has previously faced calls to sell its farmland holdings. Two years ago, Arkansas ordered Syngenta to sell about 160 acres in the state, where it maintained an agricultural research facility with a few dozen employees. Syngenta at the time called the state's decision shortsighted. A Syngenta spokesman said Tuesday that the company is in the process of selling its remaining U.S. farmland and currently owns less than 1,000 acres in the country. Write to Patrick Thomas at

Big threat to China, Pakistan as India is building advanced nuclear attack submarines; Indo-Pacific area will be under..., name is...

Following recent wars and international disputes, India is also developing rapidly in modern warfare. With improvements in indigenous defense technologies to advanced naval and air capabilities, India is swiftly changing its military profile to match emerging threats and strategic challenges. An example is the nuclear attack submarines development, under Project-77. What is Project 77? Project 77 is an ambitious project that strives to develop indigenous nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) for the Indian Navy. Recently, Project-77 has gained significant traction, and approval was recently secured for the development of two submarines. Under Project-77, India aspires to design six of these submarines. The submarines will be designed to remain submerged for long periods and move at faster speeds compared to traditional submarines, dramatically increasing the Navy's capability in terms of maritime security. The project is heavily reliant on major contributors like Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the Shipbuilding Centre in Visakhapatnam for indigenous project development and the magnitude of resources they bring forth. The submarines are projected to carry an enhanced version of the BrahMos missile, and future hypersonic systems are still under development by DRDO, making these submarines very valuable to India in terms of naval capability. Why is Project-77 causing concern for China and Pakistan? This project is worrying for both China and Pakistan. The SSN submarines under Project-77 are going to be a huge enhancement to India's maritime capability. With China continuously expanding its naval footprint in the Indo-Pacific region, India requires strong undersea capabilities to offset China's growing ambitions. The SSNs being developed under Project-77 will provide difficult challenges to the Chinese Navy. The submarines will have the capability of being submerged for long periods of time, quietly following Chinese warships and submarines and providing India with an intelligence and deterrence advantage in oceans surrounding India. What advanced missile systems will Project-77 submarines be equipped with? With advanced variants of the BrahMos missile and future hypersonic capabilities, these submarines will be able to strike targets in the 1,500-to-2,000-kilometer range. This extended strike capability will allow the Indian Navy to hit high-value targets from a safe distance, outside the area of enemy air defense and area anti-submarine systems. This capability will allow deep-strike missions without direct risk to the submarines, which will put considerable pressure on China's maritime strategy and monitoring network. At present, Pakistan has no operational nuclear-powered submarines. Pakistan's navy currently uses conventional submarines and surface vessels for various operations, while India's SSNs that will be provided under Project-77 will have an important strategic advantage over Pakistan. The Indian SSN-class submarines will create a constant threat to the Pakistani Navy due to their speed, stealth, and missile capability. Their speed and reliance on stealth and advanced technology enable them to remain concealed from the Pakistan Navy for long periods of time, making them almost impossible to track, counter, or deter in the maritime domain. What is Project-77 and who is building India's nuclear-powered attack submarines? The Indian government is developing nuclear-powered attack submarines. This ambitious plan is being driven by three major players; Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Shipbuilding Centre at Visakhapatnam. The submarines will undertake offensive missions striking the enemy vessels, and long-duration missions for surveillance. The submarines will be designed to have BrahMos missiles, and in the not too distant future hypersonic weapons. What is a Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarine (SSN)? A nuclear-powered attack submarine generates motive power from nuclear energy, which means it is under extremely long submergence times compared to conventional submarines. With nuclear engines too, SSNs are much faster than conventionally-powered submarines, and India intends to procure 6 SSNs under Project-77. Missile Capability The submarines will be capable of launching advanced variants of the BrahMos missile, as well as hypersonic missiles being developed by DRDO which can have a strike range of 1,500-2,000 kilometers which means the submarine can strike enemy bases from safety. The submarine can remain out of reach of enemy air defence (probably operating at a target range of 200km from the base) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW), while deep-strike missions can be executed in their adversary's seas.
