Trump live updates: Congress to vote on ‘Big, Beautiful Bill' in defining moment for president's second term

Independent11 hours ago

President Donald Trump 's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' will be subjected to an unlimited series of amendment votes in the Senate on Monday.
The 940-page tax and spending bill, which maps out much of the president's domestic legislative agenda, narrowly passed the House of Representatives last month and scraped through the Senate on Saturday night 51-49 after Majority Leader John Thune and Vice President JD Vance managed to persuade most Republican dissenters to fall in line.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has warned that passage of the bill will add an estimated $3.3trn to the United States's $36.2trn national debt over the next decade, which Democrats hope will give conservative fiscal hawks cause for concern.
Trump himself has urged his party to push through the bill regardless and ignore objections raised by the Senate parliamentarian about several of its provisions as its July 4 deadline looms.
Senators will start voting on the amendments, on what could prove to be a very long day, from 9am ET (2pm GMT) on Monday.

Anti-Trump Republican Don Bacon won't run for reelection

A Republican representing a key swing congressional district will not run for reelection in the midterms . Representative Don Bacon (R-Neb.), of Nebraska 's Second District announced Monday that 'after consultation with [his] family & much prayer, [he] decided not to seek reelection in 2026.' Bacon is a moderate member of the GOP caucus, and has often clashed with Trump throughout his tenure as well as the MAGA wing of the Republican party. Currently undecided on the Senate version of Trump 'big, beautiful' budget bill, Bacon has raised concerns over cuts to Medicaid, the government's healthcare program. As Nebraska splits its electoral college votes, Bacon's district is one that both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won in their respective presidential elections despite the state's overall Republican lean. Democrats are sure to look at Bacon's retirement as a key pickup opportunity next year. Bacon is the latest anti-Trump Republican to cement his 2026 plans. On Sunday, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis revealed that he is not seeking reelection in 2026 amid a new brewing GOP civil war. 'As many of my colleagues have noticed over the last year, and at times even joked about, I haven't exactly been excited about running for another term,' Tillis said in a statement. 'That is true since the choice is between spending another six years navigating the political theatre and partisan gridlock in Washington or spending that time with the love of my life Susan, our two children, three beautiful grandchildren, and the rest of our extended family back home. 'It's not a hard choice, and I will not be seeking re-election,' he added. The move comes as Tillis drew the ire of Trump over his opposition to the president's 'big, beautiful' budget bill currently making its way through the U.S. Senate. Tillis was one of two Republican senators who voted against the 'motion to proceed' on Trump's budget bill Saturday evening, along with Kentucky Republican Rand Paul . In a post made to his social media site Truth Social Sunday morning, President Trump came after Tillis, claiming that he 'hurt the great people of North Carolina' and calling him a 'talker and complainer.' 'Thom Tillis has hurt the great people of North Carolina. Even on the catastrophic flooding, nothing was done to help until I took office. Then a Miracle took place! Tillis is a talker and complainer, Not A Doer! He's even worse than Rand 'Fauci' Paul,' Trump wrote on Sunday morning. Tillis, who was set to face a reelection fight in a critical swing state next year in the 2026 midterms, raised significant concerns this week over the budget bill's deep cuts to Medicaid. Tillis shared projections that his state could lose $38.9 billion, impacting more than 600,000 North Carolinians. Cutting Medicaid was seen by a number of Republicans as a way to pay for the president's policy agenda, which includes increases in areas such as border security, which the White House asked to be at $150 billion. Notably, Republican leaders in Tillis' own state said they were willing to work with the hand they were dealt by Washington. North Carolina's State Senate Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger wrote on X, formerly Twitter Saturday that he supports '@realDonaldTrump's Big Beautiful Bill and the legislature will work through any implementation issues.' North Carolina is state that Trump has narrowly won in all three of his elections, yet still sees Democrat leadership at the state level, making it a swing state.

Apple loses bid to dismiss US smartphone monopoly case

June 30 (Reuters) - Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab must face the U.S. Department of Justice's lawsuit accusing the iPhone maker of unlawfully dominating the U.S. smartphone market, a judge ruled on Monday. U.S. District Judge Julien Neals in Newark, New Jersey, denied Apple's motion to dismiss the lawsuit accusing the company of using restrictions on third-party app and device developers to keep users from switching to competitors and unlawfully dominate the market. The decision would allow the case to go forward in what could be a years-long fight for Apple against enforcers' attempt to lower what they say are barriers to competition with Apple's iPhone. Sales of the world's most popular smartphone totaled $201 billion in 2024. Apple introduced a new budget model iPhone in February with enhanced features priced at $170 more than its predecessor. The lawsuit filed in March 2024 focuses on Apple's restrictions and fees on app developers, and technical roadblocks to third-party devices and services -- such as smart watches, digital wallets and messaging services -- that would compete with its own. DOJ, along with several states and Washington, D.C., say the practices destroy competition and Apple should be blocked from continuing them. Apple had argued that its limitations on third-party developers' access to its technology were reasonable, and that forcing it to share technology with competitors would chill innovation. The case is one of a series of U.S. antitrust cases against Big Tech companies brought during the Biden and first Trump administrations. Facebook parent Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab and (AMZN.O), opens new tab are facing lawsuits by antitrust enforcers alleging they illegally maintain monopolies, and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab is facing two such lawsuits.

CNN panelist calls Mamdani a ‘Muslim AOC' and says Democrats have ‘death wish' for tapping him as NYC mayor

A CNN panelist has laid into New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, branding him as a 'Muslim AOC ' and saying that Democrats had a 'death wish' for selecting him in the race. Jonah Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Dispatch, said that Mamdani's victory in the New York Democratic mayoral primary was 'fantastic news for the Trump administration' but 'disastrous' for the city. It comes after Mamdani caused a stunning upset by winning the high-profile primary election last week, beating controversial candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for the nomination. His nomination is set to be confirmed this week, when vote counting resumes, though Cuomo has already conceded the race. Speaking in the latest episode of The Dispatch's flagship podcast, Goldberg acknowledged there was now a '50/50 chance' that Mamdani would become the next mayor of New York. But, he added: 'This is fantastic news for the Trump administration, that they will have the a sort of, you know, Muslim version of AOC. '[He's] a 'defund the police' guy and pro, you know, Palestine, pro-Gaza, [a] pro-Hamas demonstrator type who wants socialist grocery stores and free public transportation and rent freezes and all of these things. 'They will have him as a straw man, as a human strawman, as a whipping boy, as a poster boy.' He added: 'It is like the Democratic Party has a death wish. And also like New York City has a death wish.' Mamdani, a progressive, ran on a platform of making New York City a more affordable place to live and had the backing of New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez – known as AOC – and has pledged to increase taxes for its wealthiest residents to pay for outreach programs. Goldberg condemned the 'creepy, anti-Muslim rhetoric' directed at Mamdani from some on the right, but also took issue with a post the potential Mayor made in the wake the October 7 attacks my Hamas on Israel. 'Mandami put out a statement condemning Israel for its attack on Gaza, with no mention of the attack on Israel. That's the kind of guy is,' he said. In the October 8, 2023 post Mamdani wrote: 'I mourn the hundreds of people killed across Israel and Palestine in the last 36 hours. 'Netanyahu's declaration of war, the Israeli government's decision to cut electricity from Gaza, and Knesset members calling for another Nakba will undoubtedly lead to more violence and suffering in the days and weeks to come. The path toward a just and lasting piece can only begin by ending the occupation and dismantling apartheid.'
