Selangor outcast Safuwan lands loan move to Sailors

KUALA LUMPUR: Unwanted by Selangor despite having a year left on his contract, defender Safuwan Baharudin has officially joined Singapore Premier League champions Lion City Sailors on loan for the 2025-2026 season.
Selangor confirmed the move with a brief social media post on Sunday.
"Centre-back Safuwan Baharudin has officially joined Lion City Sailors (Singapore) on loan for the 2025/26 season. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter, Saf," read the statement.
No further details were provided.
The announcement ends weeks of confusion and speculation, following Timesport's report last month on what was dubbed the "curious case of Safuwan."
The 34-year-old Singapore international had publicly claimed that he had been told he was no longer part of Selangor's first-team plans, and was later spotted training with the club's Under-23 squad in Shah Alam.
Safuwan made history in 2015 as the first Singaporean to play in Australia's A-League, with Melbourne City. He has since become a familiar presence in the Malaysia Super League, having turned out for several clubs over the past decade.
Now, he is eager to begin a new chapter with the Sailors, a move that reunites him with national teammates Hariss Harun, Hami Syahin, Lionel Tan and Shawal Anuar.
"I'm very excited to be part of a team that's doing everything it can to raise the bar for Singapore football," said Safuwan in a statement.
"I followed the club's run in last season's Asian Champions League 2 closely — it was truly inspiring for the country. The club's lofty ambitions are very much aligned with my own goals, and I'm ready to help us reach even greater heights this season."

Golfers battle for national honours

Timesport KUALA LUMPUR: The chase for national honours intensified as the Perodua National Amateur Golf Series (PNAGS) saw over 400 golfers battle it out in the Northern Region Qualifying Round across four venues. Golfers from Penang, Perlis, Kedah and Perak competed at Penang Golf Resort, Impian Golf & Country Club, Permaipura Golf & Country Club, and Royal Perak Golf Club respectively, all aiming for a spot in the PNAGS National Final at Saujana Golf & Country Club from Sept 28-30. In Kedah, Langkawi's Juzaili Johari stole the spotlight with a commanding display at Permaipura, carding a 68 nett to top the Medal A category. Playing off a handicap of five, Juzaili posted seven birdies in a round that also featured five pars, four bogeys and two double bogeys. His performance not only earned him the title but also the captain's armband for the Kedah team. He will be joined by Johari Abdul Hamid (Medal B – 69 nett), Syazwan Yusof (Medal C – 68 nett), Zaiful Masri (Medal D – handicap 16), and Fairoz Latip (Medal E – handicap 21). Seasoned PNAGS campaigner Ahmad Shahrul Shafie led the way for Perlis, emerging as the Medal A winner with a 72 nett. Playing off three, he carded three birdies, nine pars and six bogeys at Impian Golf & Country Club to secure his berth in the national showdown. At the Penang qualifier, Batu Pahat's Eddy Ismail held his nerve to finish top in the Medal A division with a 74 nett. The four-handicapper's round included two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys. He will captain the Penang squad at Saujana. Meanwhile, veteran Siew Cheng Fatt proved his mettle in Perak, carding a steady 73 nett at Royal Perak Golf Club to claim the top spot in the Medal A division. Cheng Fatt, who plays off four, will lead the Perak team, who include Zailana Dan (Medal B), Ilyas Safiyan (Medal C), Dalimi Dali (Medal D), and newcomer Fahmi Ismail (Medal E).

ASTAF: Hatyai Safe for Thai King's Cup Sepaktakraw

THE 38th Thai King's Cup in Hatyai remains safe, peaceful and fully under control, the Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (ASTAF) said today following concerns over regional security. ASTAF president Datuk Abdul Halim Kader said the situation in Hatyai is unaffected by the recent military skirmishes near the Thailand-Cambodia border, which is more than 900 kilometres from the tournament venue. 'We encourage all participants, especially Malaysian and Singaporean fans, to proceed with their travel plans confidently and join us in rallying behind Team Malaysia and Team Singapore as they compete at the pinnacle of international sepak takraw,' he said in an advisory today. Abdul Halim said Thai authorities have also reinforced security at all official accommodations and the tournament venue at the Hatyai Hall inside Central Hatyai Shopping Mall, with additional personnel deployed. As part of precautionary measures, he also said all 18 participating national teams have been advised to remain vigilant and return to their official hotels immediately following each match to ensure smooth tournament operations and safety. It was reported yesterday that a Thai civilian was killed and three others, including a five-year-old child, were seriously injured following a clash between Thai and Cambodian troops in a disputed border area early Thursday. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have been disputing an 817-km undemarcated border for decades, which continues to sour diplomatic ties- BERNAMA
