Manchester City striker completes Championship loan transfer

Yahoo2 days ago
Hugo Viana and Manchester City have finalised a season-long loan agreement for highly-rated striker talent Divin Mubama ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
The 20-year-old joined Manchester City's academy ranks from West Ham in the summer of 2024 and has made quite the impression across the club's youth sides since he swapped east London for Manchester.

Mubama scored on his full senior Manchester City debut in a 8-0 rout of Salford City in the FA Cup in January. However, a potential spot in Guardiola's ranks seems unlikely for the Englishman despite his first-team heroics in the presence of Erling Haaland.
Julian Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid for £82 million last summer, with Manchester City only adding Omar Marmoush to their attacking ranks in January as they look to kickstart a new era under Guardiola after a sub-standard 2024-25 campaign.
Haaland was burdened with an overwhelming share of the goalscoring burden last season and despite the 24-year-old Norwegian's impressive tally of 38 goals in all competitions, City could always do with another centre-forward.
Goals have dried up in the attacking areas for the Blues, who have seen the likes of Savinho, Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish struggle for goals. Phil Foden was not at his usual best for much of last season, with a bleak contribution to the scoresheet from midfield as well.

Marmoush has provided some hope of the burden alleviating from Haaland, who played a heavy chunk of minutes last season and fell prey to an ankle injury in Manchester City's 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over Bournemouth in March.
City have added Rayan Cherki to their attack this summer and there is an internal hope at the club that Foden will be back to his best next season as Guardiola and co prepare for life beyond Kevin De Bruyne, who was not given a contract renewal as he approached the end of his final deal at the Etihad Stadium and has since joined Napoli on a free transfer.
As confirmed by all parties on Saturday, Manchester City have agreed to send striker talent Divin Mubama on loan to Championship side Stoke City for the duration of the upcoming 2025/26 campaign.
Mubama has been linked with a season-long loan away from the City Football Academy (CFA) in recent months and a year at the bet365 Stadium will give the young forward an ideal platform to progress his career with regular first-team minutes.

City have routinely allowed promising academy stars to go out on loan and seek senior opportunities in the EFL Championship and the Premier League to step outside the comfort of the City Football Academy in recent years.
Liam Delap represents the best example of a young Manchester City academy graduate who tested himself across clubs in England on loan and is now reaping the rewards – having earned a £30 million transfer to Chelsea in June following a breakthrough 2024-25 campaign at Ipswich Town.

World No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka narrowly avoids major upset, advances to Wimbledon semifinal

No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka narrowly defeated No. 104-ranked Laura Siegemund 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the Wimbledon semifinals on Tuesday at the All England Club. Sabalenka, 27, was twice down a break in the third set before she surged and won the final three games of the set. "She pushed me so much," said Sabalenka after the match on the court. "After the first set, I was just looking at my box, thinking, 'Guys, I mean, book the tickets. I think we're about to leave this beautiful city, country, place.'" Sabalenka hadn't lost a set in this year's tournament until she dropped the first set against Siegemund in the quarterfinal. Siegemund, 37, plays an unorthodox style of tennis that can leave opponents flustered. Siegemund has the ability to change the depth, speed, angles and spins of her shots over and over, which can frustrate any opponent and dull the type of power that Sabalenka brings to the court. Sabalenka credited Siegemund for playing a "smart game." "It's not like it's an annoying game. It's a smart game. She's really making everyone work against her," Sabalenka said. "You know you have to work for every point. It doesn't matter if you're a big server, if you're a big hitter. You have to work. You have to run. And you have to earn the win." Siegemund was the oldest player and lowest-ranked player of the women in the quarterfinals. She arrived at the All England Club this year with a career record of 2-5 before going on to upset No. 6-ranked Madison Keys and pushing Sabalenka to the brink. For Sabalenka, the win moves her into the Wimbledon semifinals for the third time in her career. She lost in both of her prior Wimbledon semifinal appearances, in 2021 and 2023. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament in which Sabalenka has not appeared in the final. The world No. 1 has won the Australian Open twice, the U.S. Open once, and lost in the French Open. Sabalenka will take on American Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals on Thursday, where she will look to break through and reach the final at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. Brentford contacted Ange Postecoglou about replacing Thomas Frank after Tottenham exit

Brentford contacted former Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou about replacing Thomas Frank. In what would have been an extraordinary sequence of events and effectively a job swap, Brentford considered Postecoglou as an option to succeed Frank, who left to join Tottenham on a three-year deal after they sacked the 59-year-old Australian. Advertisement Brentford director of football Phil Giles held informal discussions with Postecoglou but he was not interviewed for the role, as both parties agreed moving forward was not the best option. Other candidates Brentford considered included former Ajax head coach Francesco Farioli, who has now joined Porto, but they instead promoted set-piece coach Keith Andrews. Postecoglou joined Spurs in June 2023 and he guided them to a fifth-place finish in his first season. His second year in charge was disrupted by a crippling injury crisis. Spurs lost 22 league matches and finished 17th but won the Europa League after beating Manchester United in the final. Postecoglou delivered Spurs their first piece of silverware in 17 years but he was sacked two weeks after that famous victory in Bilbao. Frank, who had been in charge of Brentford for nearly seven years, replaced Postecoglou. Andrews, a former Republic of Ireland international, joined Brentford as their set-piece coach last summer and worked under Frank for a year. The 44-year-old's familiarity with the squad and strong presentation ensured he was the first-choice candidate. Andrews was officially appointed as Brentford's new head coach on a three-year contract at the end of June. At an introductory press conference for Andrews, which was held last week, Giles spoke about the hiring process. 'There's always going to be some degree of risk,' Giles said. 'It's more risky to go and get a coach we don't know from a club where the environment might be different or maybe people around them made them successful. This is actually quite a low-risk appointment because I know how good Keith is.' (Justin Tallis/AFP via Getty Images)
