Kawasaki says its compensation practices fair, competitive amid strike
'Like many companies, we were hit hard during the pandemic,' the KMPC said in a press release. ''But we never cut back on supporting our employees. We've continued to provide competitive pay and meaningful benefits."
The company said that despite setbacks from the pandemic including reduced sales and production, it has consistently prioritized employee welfare by offering wages and benefits that outpace inflation.
The statement came after the Kawasaki United Labor Union (KULU) filed a manifestation before the Department of Labor and Employment-National Conciliation and Mediation Board, saying that its strike, launched in May, was legal.
KULU said that 'there is nothing in the Labor Code that prohibits and prevents the Pilipino working man from declaring a strike on CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) negotiations deadlock.'
This was in response to the complaint lodged by Kawasaki before the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) by KMPC, asking for the strike to be declared illegal.
The KMPC said its average salary for rank-and-file workers is already at around P38,000 per month, more than double the national poverty threshold for a family of five.
Aside from wages, the company stressed that it also provides ''generous bonuses and full benefits,'' typically giving up to a 16th month pay bonus.
Its benefits package also includes family health coverage, rice and transport allowances, production and subsistence incentives, and vacation and sick leave above legal requirements. — BM, GMA Integrated News

Bill seeking P1,200 national minimum wage refiled in House
A bill mandating a P1,200 national daily minimum wage was refiled in the House of Representatives Wednesday. In filing House Bill 2599, Makabayan bloc lawmakers Antonio Tinio of ACT Teachers party-list and Renee Co of Kabataan party-list said the regional wage board system in the last 30 years only resulted in poverty-level wages for workers. They proposed the abolition of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board by amending Article 99 of the Labor Code and replace it the National Wages and Productivity Board. 'Filipino workers have weighed in on the regionalized wage regime through 36-year history and found it a big failure. They are now demanding that it be scrapped and for the Philippines to return to the regime of uniform national minimum wage that is based on the family living wage,' the lawmakers said in their explanatory note. The authors then cited an IBON Foundation study showing that the amount needed to raise the current minimum wage to P1,200 living wage only requires 29.7% to 49.1% of the profits amassed by private employers, making it feasible if only employers are willing to cut down on profits. 'The surge in the prices of oil and other basic goods and services in the last several years likewise has devoured, according to some estimates, the wages of our workers by 25-30%. Workers are now groaning under the crushing effect of heavy taxes and high prices on their wages and income,' the lawmakers said. 'It is therefore imperative for the State to ensure that what the Constitution-the workers' just share in the fruits of production and the workers' right to living wage-is fulfilled in pursuit of the equitable distribution of income and wealth towards economic and social development. The State must recognize its justice and necessity given the workers' contribution to society and the economy amid all the hardships,' they added. SONA 2025: Marcos 'willing' to operate on reenacted budget in 2026
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. made an unprecedented declaration that the government would operate under a reenacted budget in 2026, warning that he will veto a proposed budget bill that will not be in harmony with his administration's programs and priorities. 'For the 2026 national budget, I will return any proposed Generation Appropriations bill that is not fully aligned with the National Expenditure Program (NEP),' Marcos said during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA 2025) Monday. 'Further, I am willing to do this even if we end up with a reenacted budget. 'Di ko aapribubahan ang kahit na anong budget na hindi alinsunod sa plano ng gobyerno para sa sambayanang Pilipino (I will not approve a budget that is not aligned with the government's plan for the Filipinos),' the President declared. The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) defines a reenacted budget as a situation where the previous year's General Appropriations Act (GAA) is extended and remains in effect for a preceding year until such time the Congress passes a budget bill into law. Early this month, Marcos approved the P6.793-trillion NEP for Fiscal Year 2026. The 2026 NEP resulted from about P10.101 trillion budget proposals which was trimmed down due to limited fiscal space and the fiscal consolidation strategy, which targets gradually reducing the national government's deficit from 5.5% of GDP in 2025 to 4.3% by 2028. The proposed P6.793-trillion 2026 budget was equivalent to 22.0 percent of GDP and higher by 7.4% from the fiscal year 2025 budget of P6.326 trillion. The NEP will be submitted by the President to Congress within 30 days after the opening of the regular session. The 2025 GAA had its fair share of criticisms amid claims of insertions made by legislators during the bicam for cash aid programs such as AKAP and TUPAD. The President signed the P6.326-trillion GAA for 2025 in December 2024, but vetoed P194 billion worth of line items that are not consistent with his administration's priorities. Marcos issued his threat to veto the 2026 budget bill after making a stern warning against government personnel who steal funds especially for flood control projects. The President claimed that erring government officials are making a racket out of these projects by having 'kickback, initiative, errata, SOP, for the boys.' 'Kaya sa mga nakikipag-sabwatan upang kunin ang pondo ng bayan at nakawin ang kinabukasan ng ating mga mamamayan, mahiya naman kayo sa inyong kapwa Pilipino,' Marcos said. The country's Chief Executive ordered an audit and performance review of flood control 'to check, and make sure, and to know how your money was spent' as he warned that heads will roll and cases will be slapped against erring personnel and contractors. Marcos wants Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund Act amended
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Monday called on Congress to amend the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund Act to make it more responsive to the needs of farmers and boost exports of the commodity, as he said the administration seeks to plant up to 100 million coconut trees in the country. In his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), Marcos said he will ask Congress to amend the law, but did not elaborate on amendments he is looking to pursue. 'Upang lubos na pasiglahin ang industriya ng niyog, hihilingin natin sa Kongreso na amyendahan ang Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund Act, para maging mas angkop sa mga pangangailangan ng mga magsasaka,' he said. 'Bahagi lamang ito ng ginagawa nating malawakang pagpapalakas ng iba't iba pa nating industriya, kasama dito ang industriya ng asin, pagproseso at pag-export ng niyog,' he added.
