M&S checkout operator hit by claims of fraud

Yahoo25-06-2025
A payments provider used by Marks & Spencer has become embroiled in a fraud scandal after it was accused of covering up fake transactions by some customers.
Worldline, one of the world's largest payments groups, had its shares temporarily suspended on Wednesday after investors took fright at allegations it had processed some payments on behalf of scammers and had poor money-laundering controls.
Shares in the French group plunged by nearly 40pc – knocking €300m (£256m) off its share price – because of the allegations, which claimed the business turned a blind-eye to a network of dubious customers.
Worldline is one of the world's largest payments processors and moves payments around the financial system for UK high street giants including M&S, JD Sports and Aldi among others.
There is no allegation that any of these Worldline customers knew or were involved in the claims or are accused of any wrongdoing.
The Worldline claims were made by a consortium of 21 European newspapers, which alleged in its investigations that millions of euros worth of the French firm's revenues could be linked to 'high risk' customers.
According to the allegations, the company is accused of ignoring red flags to take on clients from the 'internet's shady corners' as it took a risky strategy in its push to grow its revenues.
In response, Worldline said it has strengthened its controls over the past two years, including terminating €130m worth of contracts with customers in breach of its compliance rules.
'Wherever the group identifies indications of non-compliant situations, additional checks are immediately undertaken, potentially leading to termination of the client relationship,' Worldline said.
'Worldline's Executive Management and Board of Directors are fully committed to strict compliance with regulation and risk prevention standards and to strictly enforce related rules and procedures with zero tolerance.'
Worldline was accused of turning a 'blind eye' to some customers' dubious business practices, as it scrambled to boost its revenues by taking advantage of the higher rates paid by the shady clients, the investigation says.
According to the claims, internal documents show Worldline processes hundreds of millions of euros worth of payments on behalf of such high-risk clients, including €50m in 2019 alone.
Worldline had just two employees responsible for overseeing its money laundering processes, despite having hundreds of high-risk customers, the investigation added.

As the US dollar falls, is now the time to buy US shares?

Ongoing uncertainty around tariffs has caused the dollar to weaken against the pound. As a result, UK investors looking to buy US shares get more for their money than they used to. Investors might wonder whether this means now is the time to look at some US stocks. But while the currency shift is a genuine benefit, I think there are more important considerations. Currency fluctuations are one of those things that investors don't usually pay much attention to. And a lot of the time, this is justified because the moves are too small to be meaningful. There are some exceptions. One example is the 75% decline in the value of the Nigerian naira that has given Airtel Africa shareholders something to think about over the last five years. Generally, though, movements in currencies tend to be small and not worth considering. But the value of the US dollar against the British pound is down 8% in the last 12 months. In effect, this means an 8% discount for UK investors looking to buy US stocks. And given the valuation gap between the FTSE 100 and the S&P 500, that sounds quite nice. Over the last year or so, the balance of my Stocks and Shares ISA has gradually shifted towards UK equities. That's not deliberate, it's just the way I've seen opportunities over that time. I am, however, very much looking for opportunities to balance this out a bit. So I'm actively looking for opportunities across the Atlantic (as well as elsewhere) that look attractive. Unfortunately, I don't have a particularly strong view on where the dollar is going next. So there is – from my perspective – a very real possibility it could work against me. This risk notwithstanding, there are one or two US stocks that I think look attractive. And there's one in particular that I've been buying. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) is a stock I've just started buying in the last couple of weeks. In my view, it's a rare example of a US equity trading at an unusually attractive valuation. The big challenge facing the company at the moment is the US administration's desire to reduce the amount the country spends on drugs. That's a risk for pharmaceutical firms across the board. Johnson & Johnson, however, might be less exposed to this than a number of its peers. It has a growing medical devices business that makes up around a third of its overall revenues. Moreover, the company has a strong record of increasing its dividend each year. And analysts are expecting this to continue until at least 2027. While most of my buying lately has been UK-focused, I have added Johnson & Johnson shares to my portfolio recently. But this isn't because of currency fluctuations – it's because of what I see as the strength of the underlying businesses. I'm not denying that the dollar weakening against the pound makes a difference to UK investors. However, I think there are more important things to consider when it comes to buying shares. Sometimes stocks have listings in different currencies. In those situations, I prefer to eliminate the risk of shifting foreign exchange rates entirely. But that isn't always possible, so it's something I put up with for the right opportunity. The post As the US dollar falls, is now the time to buy US shares? appeared first on The Motley Fool UK. Analyst resets Datadog stock price target after surprise addition to S&P 500

Analyst resets Datadog stock price target after surprise addition to S&P 500 originally appeared on TheStreet. Shares of Datadog () surged nearly 15% to $155.15 on July 3 after S&P Global said the monitoring software provider will be included in the S&P 500 U.S. stock index, effective before the market opens on July 9. The move surprised some investors, who had expected names like Robinhood () or AppLovin () to be next in line. Datadog will replace Juniper Networks () , which was just acquired by Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Co. () . The S&P 500 is a stock index that tracks the performance of 500 of the leading publicly traded companies in the U.S., serving as a key benchmark for the overall health of the U.S. economy. Tech firms now make up a major share of the index and have an important impact on its movements. Stocks could likely rally after being added to a major index like the S&P 500 because of increased demand from institutional investors, especially passive index funds. DoorDash () joined the index in March and has risen 20% since. Palantir () , which was added last September, has jumped more than 250% since joining. Datadog has lagged behind the broader tech sector this year, falling 5.5% through July 2, while the Nasdaq has gained 5.6%. The stock also underperformed the Nasdaq Composite Index in 2024. New York-based Datadog, founded in 2010, went public in 2019. It produces software that monitors and secures an enterprise's entire technology infrastructure — including servers, applications, databases, and security systems. The company has benefited from expanding into AI. It offers tools such as LLM Observability to help businesses monitor machine learning models and AI-driven applications in Q1 2025, Datadog generated $761.6 million in revenue, a 25% increase from a year earlier and ahead of the $741.5 million analysts were expecting. Adjusted earnings came in at 46 cents per share, beating estimates closer to 43 cents. The company raised its full-year revenue forecast to between $3.22 billion and $3.24 billion, up from its previous range of $3.18 billion to $3.20 billion. Wall Street had been looking for around $3.20 billion, according to LSEG data pulled by Reuters. Datadog also gave a second-quarter revenue outlook that topped expectations. Its next earnings report is expected in early August. Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives raised the firm's price target on Datadog to $170 from $140 and reiterated an outperform rating following the news, citing "incremental confidence in the company to capitalize on its observability initiatives over the coming years." Ives said Datadog's platform "continues to gain momentum within the observability space, especially with AI front and center." He expects the company to gain more market share with elevated usage for its AI cohort across its enterprise customers."Datadog's new products and features look to complement agentic AI trends following the company's recent partnership with OpenAI," he wrote. "On the software front, Datadog remains one of our favorite names to own, and our recent checks have been very strong as the AI Revolution takes hold."
