McCartney seventh in final on debut at Worlds
The 20-year-old, from Enniskillen in Northern Ireland, was competing at her first World Championships in Singapore.
McCartney reached the final with a personal best time of 2:23.79 to reach Friday's final.
She could not replicate that time in the final but her swim of 2:25.22 was good enough for seventh place.
"I don't have high expectations coming into the final, at the start of this year all I wanted to do is qualify for the World Championships," said McCartney after her final swim.
"This year, as the season progressed, we had to keep on moving that target, and I never thought it would be a final."
European Under-23 champion McCartney said she would learn from the final and take it into future competitions.
"Tonight's swim may not have been the fastest I've ever been, but I came into this meet seeded eighteenth and I finished seventh.
"So the progression is what it is I'll take a learning from this time and hopefully apply it to future competitions."
Olympic bronze medallist Mona McSharry will swim in the 50m breatstroke on Saturday, while Danielle Hill is in action in the 50m freestyle.
On Friday, Olympic gold medallist Jack McMillan, from Northern Ireland, helped Team GB to a gold medal in the men's 4x200m relay.

Christian Coleman, Sha'Carri Richardson's boyfriend, speaks out about her arrest
EUGENE, OR — Christian Coleman defended Sha'Carri Richardson after an alleged incident at the at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport in which Richardson was arrested for domestic violence, according to the police report obtained by USA TODAY Sports. Police say Coleman was the victim in the incident. "For me personally, I feel like it was a sucky situation all round," Coleman said Sunday. "I don't feel like she should have been arrested. I mean people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that. She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody. But I'm the type of guy who's in the business of extending grace, and mercy and love." Coleman competed in the 100 and 200 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Championships. He failed to qualify for next month's world championships. He ran a season-best 9.86 in the 100 and placed fifth. He placed sixth in the 200, running a season-best 20.02. The sprinter said incident at the airport didn't affect him at the U.S. championships. Coleman is a three-time world championship gold medalist. He won the 100 at the 2019 World Championships. Lyles says best to come after testy trials win
Noah Lyles believes he is rounding into form at the right time ahead of next month's World Championships in Tokyo after a scintillating world-leading 200m victory at the US trials on Sunday. Lyles, the reigning Olympic 100m champion, will attempt to defend both his 100m and 200m world crowns in Japan, aiming to emulate Usain Bolt with a fourth consecutive world 200m gold. The 28-year-old from Florida warmed up for that challenge in Eugene on Sunday by clocking a world-leading 19.63secs in a testy battle with Kenny Bednarek. Lyles angered Bednarek by turning his head to stare down his rival just before he took the tape. Bednarek shoved Lyles in the back over that apparent taunt. Lyles refused to comment about the flashpoint after his win. "Under coach's orders, no comment," Lyles said before brushing off further attempts to talk about the spat. Bednarek, though, was more expansive. "That's unsportsmanlike shit, and I don't deal with that," Bednarek said. "I don't deal with any of that stuff. It's not good character." The feud sets up the possibility of an intriguing rivalry over the remaining months of the season between the two US sprinters. Bednarek, meanwhile, plans to be lying in wait for Lyles in Tokyo. The 26-year-old from Tulsa has three silver medals in the 200m at major championships but is so far waiting for his breakthrough gold. "Next time we line up, I'm gonna win," Bednarek said. "That's all that matters to me." Bednarek noted too that while Lyles had run only three races in Eugene -- scratching from the 100m after his opening heat -- he had raced all five rounds of the 100m and 200m. "I've said it for years, Noah's gonna be Noah. If he wants to stare me down, that's fine," Bednarek said. "But I ran five rounds, and he was fresh.
