P&G Korea strengthens Gen Z ties with internships, marketing

P&G Korea, the Korean subsidiary of US-based consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble, is accelerating efforts to connect with Generation Z, both as a talent pool and a consumer base.
From internship-driven recruitment to youth-oriented marketing, the company is reinforcing a dynamic, youthful brand identity in an evolving job market.
According to the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, 82 percent of job postings in the first half of 2025 targeted experienced hires, while only 2.6 percent were open to new graduates. As entry-level opportunities shrink, younger job seekers are placing greater emphasis on personal growth and corporate culture when considering employers.
A Job Korea survey found that 33.9 percent of workers in their 20s to 40s would avoid companies with high salaries if organizational values and management styles did not align with their own. This sentiment highlights the growing demand among Gen Z for workplaces that prioritize mentorship, development and purpose.
In response, P&G Korea is doubling down on structured, job-linked internship programs designed to create long-term careers. The company positions internships as the foundation of its hiring strategy, offering high-potential candidates hands-on experience and an opportunity for full-time jobs.
As part of its 2025 internship cohort, 15 interns recently traveled to P&G's Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore. During the four-day visit, participants joined mentorship sessions with global executives, career development workshops, and tours of flagship R&D facilities, including the expansive Singapore Innovation Center.
'Meeting P&G's global talent and learning about its philosophy was incredibly motivating,' said one intern. 'I now have a clear goal of growing into a leader at P&G.'
Oh Seo-young, executive director of HR at P&G Korea, emphasized the company's long-term vision, stating, 'We use internships as a pipeline for future leaders, offering meaningful growth opportunities and preparing them for global competitiveness.'
P&G Korea also supports employee development from the outset, offering initiatives like the 'early responsibility' program, the Leadership Academy, and cross-functional job rotations. The company also operates a 'Build from Within' promotion system, enabling individuals to rise from intern to executive level.
Beyond recruitment, the company is also engaging Gen Z through targeted marketing. Downy, one of P&G's top-selling brands, recently named IVE's Jang Won-young as its brand ambassador, along with its launch of an upgraded version of its fabric softener. Additionally, a consumer participation campaign titled '#FindDowny' runs through Aug. 15.
Pampers has appointed influencer Ralral, who is known for her candid parenting content, as its new model, aiming to connect with young parents through authentic storytelling.

Korean internet giant Naver said Tuesday that it has acquired a controlling stake in Spain's largest consumer-to-consumer platform, Wallapop, in a move to strengthen its foothold in the European digital marketplace. Naver said it acquired an additional 70.5 percent stake in Wallapop for 377 million euros ($436 million), bringing its total ownership to 100 percent. The Korean tech firm initially invested 115 million euros in 2021 and followed up with another 75 million euros in 2023. Wallapop boasts over 19 million monthly active users and facilitates peer-to-peer transactions across a wide range of categories, from everyday goods and electronics to used vehicles. The company has steadily grown its presence in the Iberian Peninsula and is expanding into southern European markets, including Italy and Portugal. The two companies have explored collaboration through technological integration, and Naver said it decided to acquire full ownership to unlock deeper synergy and accelerate growth. 'Wallapop has emerged as a formidable player in Spain's C2C landscape,' said Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon. 'With the latest acquisition, we plan to combine Naver's technology, spanning search, advertising, payments and artificial intelligence, with Wallapop's user-friendly service to elevate the platform's capabilities and value proposition.' Naver has been actively investing in Europe since 2016 through funds managed by Korelya Capital, a venture capital firm established by Fleur Pellerin, former French Minister for Digital Economy. The company said it intends to use Wallapop as a strategic hub to deploy its technological expertise and e-commerce infrastructure across the continent. It will mark a significant step in Naver's global C2C expansion, adding Europe to its growing portfolio of platforms in North America, Korea and Japan, including Poshmark, Kream and Soda. 'With Wallapop's extensive product listings and rich storytelling potential, we aim to deepen our understanding of European consumer behavior and enhance the diversity of data in our AI ecosystem — ultimately strengthening Naver's global competitiveness,' Choi added.

Their appointments were approved at a temporary shareholders' meeting and board session held the same day. The top executives will lead the Korean insurer with independent representation rights. In a letter to employees, Kwon and Lee set a vision to transform Hanwha Life into a 'life solutions partner,' offering services that go beyond traditional insurance and are tailored to each stage of a customer's life. To achieve this, the new CEOs emphasized the need to strengthen artificial intelligence capabilities, calling AI essential for navigating the tech-driven transformation of the financial sector. 'As AI accelerates the arrival of a hyper-personalized era, the insurance industry must also deliver individualized solutions based on a deep understanding of each customer's life,' they said. The two leaders also stressed their commitment to expanding Hanwha Life's global business. 'We will continue pursuing our vision of becoming a global, comprehensive financial group; advancing our business in East Asia, including Indonesia, where we have established a full-service financial system; and expanding our presence in the US, where we've entered the brokerage sector,' they said. This year, Hanwha Life made a strategic investment in Indonesia's Nobu Bank and acquired a controlling stake in US brokerage firm Velocity Clearing. On Tuesday, the co-CEOs visited all 30 floors of the company's headquarters in Seoul's Yeouido district, greeting and encouraging the firm's 1,800 employees. The leadership change follows the departure of former CEO Yeo Seung-joo, who is moving to Hanwha Group to head its management support division. The dual CEO structure returns after its suspension in 2019, when Yeo became the sole CEO. Student startup boom slows across South Korea, but top universities see sharp rise

Student-led startups are losing momentum across most of South Korea for the first time in three years, but at a handful of top universities, entrepreneurship is quietly accelerating. New data released Monday by the Korea Council for University Education and university startup support centers showed that 1,860 startups were founded by university students nationwide in 2024, falling 7 percent from the previous year's 2,000. The number of student entrepreneurs also declined, down 6.6 percent year-on-year from 2,137 to 1,997. This marks the first nationwide decline since 2021, when campus activity was still restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The slowdown follows two years of rapid growth in student entrepreneurship; from 2022 to 2023, it surged by more than 23 percent. The drop is thought to be largely due to a tougher investment climate, a slowing global economy and a significant pullback in government support programs. Two of South Korea's most prominent early-stage funding initiatives have seen sharp reductions. The "Pre-Startup Package" funded 1,530 companies in 2021, but only 930 in 2023, a 39.2 percent cut. Similarly, the "Early Startup Package" dropped from 900 companies to 590 over the same period, a 34.4 percent decrease. These programs are a primary funding source for student entrepreneurs who lack access to private venture capital. According to Lee Ki-dae, head of the Seoul-based Startup Alliance Center, reliance on public support creates a delayed but significant impact. 'Most student startups are not backed by private VC investment but by public or university support, so they tend to react to market changes with a time lag,' he said. Despite this cooling trend nationwide, four universities are bucking the pattern. In 2024, Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University and KAIST collectively produced 205 student entrepreneurs, a 31.4 percent increase from 156 in 2023. KAIST alone saw a 53.8 percent jump, followed by Korea University at 50 percent, Seoul National at 44.1 percent and Yonsei at 11.3 percent. Together, these four institutions now account for over 10 percent of all student entrepreneurs in the country, up from 7.8 percent just two years ago. 'At schools like KAIST or Seoul National, you have stronger labs, better access to funding, and a long history of research in advanced fields like AI, semiconductors and robotics,' Lee said. 'So when deep tech becomes the trend, it's natural that students at those universities are in a better position to start companies. They're surrounded by the right people, equipment and support systems from day one.'
