Prince George turns 12 today — and it means a series of changes are coming

Prince George is one year closer to being a teenager. On July 22, Prince William and Kate Middleton took to Instagram to wish their eldest son — who is currently second in line to the British throne — a happy 12th birthday. As is tradition in the royal family, George's birthday post featured an updated portrait of the birthday boy. George, who is looking more and more like his father, wore a white and blue striped button-down shirt under a brown fleece vest and jeans. He was also wearing a friendship bracelet as he smiled at the camera with his arms on a fence. 'Happy Birthday to our little (not so little anymore) Future King,' one user wrote in the comment section. The Prince and Princess of Wales also shared a video of George having fun and holding hands with his two younger siblings — Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. The photo and video were taken in Norfolk earlier this year by photographer Josh Shinner, per People. It was the same photoshoot used for Louis' birthday portrait, which was shared on April 23, and a Father's Day tribute to Prince William, shared on June 15. As for George, his 12th birthday marks a series of changes in the soon-to-be teenager's life as a royal. For starters, the British royal family has a longstanding history of not allowing direct heirs to the throne — which would include Prince William, who is first in line, and Prince George — to travel on a plane together. The family does this to 'secure the future of the monarchy should there be a tragic accident,' per 7NEWS Australia. For reference, Prince William was 12 years old when he stopped flying with his father, King Charles III. King Charles' former pilot opens up about royal flight protocol During a 2023 appearance on 'A Right Royal Podcast,' King Charles' former pilot, Graham Laurie, opened up about the protocol and revealed the one way around it. 'Interestingly, we flew all four: the Prince [King Charles], the Princess [Diana], Prince William and Prince Harry, up until Prince William was 12 years old. After that, he had to have a separate aircraft,' Laurie said. 'And we could only fly all four together when they were young with the written permission of Her Majesty,' he added. It's unclear if William and Kate will be subject to similar protocols and privileges, but the couple have a history of doing what's best for their kids and family — even if it means skipping royal events. For example, they've now skipped the Easter Matins Service at Windsor Castle two years in a row, according to People. The family skipped the Easter outing in 2024 due to Kate's cancer diagnosis, which was revealed just weeks prior, and again in 2025 in order to spend time with their kids at home. Prince George is also entering his final year at Lambrook Aside from the flight protocol, George will also see his schooling change in the coming year. George — along with his two siblings — currently attend Lambrook Preparatory School in Berkshire, which only teaches kids up until the age of 13, according to Hello! Magazine. William and Kate have a major decision to make as to what's next for George's education. Some royal experts believe that he'll follow in his father's footsteps and attend the all-boys school Eton College in Berkshire, according to The Daily Mail. George's uncle, Prince Harry, also attended the school, per BBC. Other theories suggest that George may follow in his mother's footsteps and attend Marlborough College in Wiltshire, but that speculation has since been tested, according to People. Eton College requires students to be registered before Aug. 31 of the year they turn 10, per the school's website. While the family and school have yet to make an announcement on George's education, the decision very well could already be made, per The Daily Mail. If that's not enough change for the future King, he'll also see his royal and etiquette training ramped up as he makes more regular appearances for royal events. George already experienced some of this when he joined other senior royals in a tea party for the family's VE Day festivities in May, according to The Daily Mail. George will also become more involved in daily briefings as he grows older, per 7NEWS Australia.

Alex the Great, sports' cherished therapy bunny, dead after cancer battle

SAN FRANCISCO — A beloved therapy bunny named Alex The Great, who provided snuggles and comfort from ballparks to NBA arenas, airports, farmers markets and even Easter egg hunts and NASCAR races, has died. He was 4. A floppy-eared Flemish giant who was larger than life in both size and spirit, Alex suffered complications from cancer treatment and died early Monday, his owners said. The rabbit had undergone care at the renowned UC Davis Veterinary Hospital in recent days. Alex appeared June 4 sporting his signature cap for Padres-Giants at Oracle Park. At 4 months old, he attended his first Giants game in April 2021 — believed to be the first bunny in the stands at the waterfront ballpark. Kei Kato and Josh Row pose with their therapy bunny Alex The Great during an Arizona Fall League Game at Scottsdale Stadium, Nov. 6, 2021. AP He loved wearing bow ties and riding in his remote-controlled car, which Alex did in November 2021 following an Arizona Fall League appearance at Scottsdale Stadium where he saw now-Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe as a rising prospect. Owners Kei Kato and Josh Row saved Alex from a slaughterhouse — but, really, it was the bunny who saved them. They took Alex on all their trips and he spent hours at San Francisco International Airport with a golden retriever friend offering travelers emotional support. 'He saved us and saved so many people,' Kato said via text message Monday. 'All the stories people are sharing are so overwhelming.' Fans stopped in awe when they saw Alex The Great wherever he went, often surprised by his size and always eager to snap a photo or selfie. Kato and Row were thrilled to share him with the world because Alex had brought them so much love and joy and they wanted to spread that to anyone who might need a lift or a smile. Or provide a chance to pet Alex's soft orange fur or give him a hug. 'We remember him well for his surprise frequent visits to the ballpark,' Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a text message. 'We remember the comfort he brought those who loved him and the joy he brought so many.' Kato lost her brewery restaurant during the pandemic and adopting Alex provided her with a new purpose. He helped Kato deal with the anxiety and stress of no longer having her main source of income and the fulfillment her business brought. 'I lost it all because of COVID, so I've been really stressed a lot,' Kato said at the ballpark that spring night in 2021. 'We support local. I was a local. He's well trained, too.' MediaNews Group via Getty Images When Alex became such a hit on the big screen, quick-thinking Daniel Kurish of the Marlins' media relations staff went to find the bunny in the seventh inning to deliver some Miami gear. Less than a month later, in May 2021, Alex appeared at a Suns-Warriors game at Chase Center. Of course, they loved him there, too. He'd also pop up outside the arena in Thrive City every now and then to greet fans before games. 'Let his legend continue,' Kato and Row wrote on Alex's social media, 'he was very loved.'

Is Taylor Swift counting down to something? Here are 4 fan theories.

From her 12th album to an Eras Tour documentary, speculation is swirling among Swifties over the pop star's latest "Easter egg" hunt. After a two-year globe-spanning tour and multiple new albums, Taylor Swift appears to be taking a much-deserved break. (She's partying with Selena Gomez! Hanging with boyfriend Travis Kelce! Having a double-brother hangout with Dakota Johnson!) But is that really it?! Fans aren't so sure. Now they're speculating that the artist is dropping something new soon, and it all has to do with a supposed countdown of her previous albums. On July 18, the official Swift Instagram account Taylor Nation posted a tribute to the singer's 2006 self-titled album, which, thanks to a recent purchase of her previous masters, she now owns outright. 'Everything we need is finally right here by our side and to celebrate, stream the album with us at 1pm EDT today,' Taylor Nation wrote in their post featuring a younger Swift. But it wasn't just Swift's debut. Taylor Nation later revealed it was honoring all of the star's albums, with 2008's Fearless getting a 'streaming party' on July 19 at 2 p.m. ET. Fans speculated the times for the streaming parties were actually a countdown — a theory was seemingly confirmed when the account shared a tribute to 2010's Speak Now and held that listening party at 3 p.m. ET. Swifties are sure that the Easter egg-loving artist is planning on revealing something major. Of course, it wouldn't be the first time that Swifties believed some big announcement was coming only to be let down. (Ahead of this year's Grammys, fans were certain Swift was releasing a rerecorded version of Reputation that ultimately didn't even exist.) Still, if we're speculating, what could it be? Here are some of the best fan theories from social media. A documentary is on its way Fans have long been convinced that Swift is going to release a documentary about her record-shattering Eras Tour and the reclaiming of her original work. Swift has done a documentary before: Netflix's 2020 Miss Americana, about Swift's retreat from the public eye and reemergence with her album Lover. Now that Swift reached a new pinnacle in her career, it only makes sense to do another one — and there are some clues that suggest it's more than possible. Fans point to the many cameras on the Eras Tour, particularly on the final stops in Vancouver, British Columbia — footage that could not have been used for the wildly successful concert film, which came out before the tour ended. Plus, the hashtags on the countdown posts all include references to the Eras Tour — and some fans believe it could be to rewind the clock back to Swift's three-hour-long spectacle. Swift is teasing her 12th original album There's nothing Swifties love more than hearing new music from the artist, which is why many are hopeful that the countdown is all leading up to the announcement of a new album. If Swift does a streaming party each hour for all of her 11 original albums, we'd eventually get to midnight — and some fans believe that is when she could announce her 12th album. But it's not just the potential countdown to 12 that's making fans suspicious. As TikToker SwiftieInKC pointed out in a recent video, Taylor Nation is using a new logo (specifically, a crest) that we haven't seen before on the social media posts for this countdown — and Swift is notorious for changing up stylistic choices as she enters a new era. The crest looks very similar to one she's putting on her new merchandise collection, the TikToker noted — and it's the only merch collection she has not assigned to a specific album. So is it possible that the merch with this crest is actually merch for the upcoming TS12?!? We'll have to see! There is a small wrinkle in this plan, however. We don't yet know if Swift will celebrate each and every album. Taylor Nation previously said on X that they would be paying tribute to the six original eras that Swift did not own outright before she announced she had acquired her masters in May. That means the countdown could stop after Reputation, her sixth studio album. Swift is sharing vault tracks In a May letter to fans about the acquisition of her first six albums, Swift shared that she had not yet rerecorded all of Reputation, suggesting that we would not get a 'Taylor's Version' of the album as many excitedly anticipated. But she did say that vault tracks could emerge at a later point — and some fans speculate that this countdown will unlock at least one of them. There are a couple of reasons it could point to a major Reputation drop. TikToker BookBeeDani pointed out in a recent video that the images on Swift's tributes all feature official Reputation colors orange and black. In fact, Swift is wearing a purple dress in the Speak Now photo, but it has been edited to appear black — as has her golden sequined outfit for Fearless. Although BookBeeDani posted before Red's tribute dropped, the pattern held: Swift's Red photos all featured the star wearing black, and the Red cover image was edited to have a more orangey tinge. And as BookBeeDani noted, Swift is slated to drop a Reputation tribute on Wednesday — which also happens to be the same day that Prime Video drops The Summer I Turned Pretty. This show is major for Swifties: Creator Jenny Han is a huge fan of Swift and has featured a ton of her music, including Swift's new rerecordings of previous work. Swift dropping a Reputation vault track just in time for it to be featured on the latest episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty definitely feels possible. It's another merch drop Swift fans may be eternally hopeful for new content from their favorite artist, but after years of misreading Easter eggs or overhyping moments, they're also not getting their hopes up. Many people suspect that Swift's countdown will be for something fun but hardly a major deal — like a merch announcement. The comments section on TaylorNation's IG posts is full of merch drop woes. 'I swear to god if all this is just a countdown to a merch drop,' one Instagram commenter wrote. Another added, 'We are getting cardigans at the end of this countdown, aren't we?' A third wrote, 'If this is a countdown to just a cardigan I'm gonna crashout. I NEED A ERAS TOUR DOC PLEASEEEE.' Will Swifties stay fed with new music or a tour documentary? Or will they find themselves adding another sweater or hat to their carts on her website? Guess we'll have to wait until the end of the countdown to find out. Solve the daily Crossword
