‘Hopefully just a hematoma': Eben Etzebeth goes for scan after being carted off against Ospreys

"I'm hoping it's just a hematoma that might come right even before the weekend," coach John Plumtree said. "He's a pretty quick healer. Hopefully, nothing sinister."

The only drawback of the Sharks' bonus-point United Rugby Championship win against Ospreys on Friday night was the injury sustained by Eben Etzebeth.
The home side's captain appeared to hurt his knee during a cleanout in the first half. He was tended to by paramedics before playing for three more minutes. Finally, he gave in to the obvious pain he was in and was taken off by the paramedics in a golf cart.
He later appeared on the sidelines on crutches.
Etzebeth to receive a scan
This comes at a particularly difficult time for the World Rugby and SA Rugby Player of the Year nominee after he was out for five months due to failed concussion tests earlier in the season. Then, the club captain missed the Ulster game two weeks ago due to flu, only to be taken off injured now.
'I'm hoping it's just a hematoma that might come right even before the weekend,' head coach John Plumtree said after the game. 'He's a pretty quick healer. Hopefully, nothing sinister.'
He said they would only know more after Etzebeth receives a scan.
'You could see he was just trying to push through it. But he was too sore. At half-time, I spoke to him and he had been feeling a bit better.'
After the game, stand-in captain Siya Kolisi said he had not spoken to Etzebeth but it was 'hopefully nothing serious'.
'He's a hard man, so if something is bothering him we'd rather be safe than sorry,' Kolisi said.
Sharks down Ospreys to finish in the top four
The Sharks put in a commanding performance against Ospreys, winning four tries to one (final score 29–10). This was enough to guarantee their place in the top four on the URC log despite having one final regular season match against Scarlets next weekend.
Finishing in the top four offers the advantage of a home quarter-final at the end of the month. Should the Sharks finish even higher – and this is possible after the Bulls and Glasgow Warriors play some tough upcoming fixtures – they would play against a team finishing lower on the log in the quarter-final.

Lions hooker Sheehan banned over Lynagh incident

British and Irish Lions hooker Dan Sheehan has been suspended for four matches for flattening Wallabies playmaker Tom Lynagh in Saturday's third and final Test, World Rugby announced on Monday. The 26-year-old Irishman -- who captained the side for part of the 22-12 defeat after Maro Itoje suffered a head injury -- had argued his action did not merit a citing nor was it foul play. However, an independent panel disagreed, imposing the ban, although he will miss only three games if he successfully completes a coaching intervention. "The sanction has been accepted by the player," read the judgement. "In determining foul play, the Committee found that Sheehan's actions were reckless. "The Committee found that he made head contact with the Australian player, that his action amounted to a high degree of danger and that no mitigation applied." Sheehan charged into the breakdown during the first half of the clash in Sydney, appearing to elbow Lynagh in the head. It was missed by the referee and television match official (TMO), despite Lynagh leaving the field for a head injury assessment which he failed. Sheehan will miss his province Leinster's pre-season match against Cardiff and two United Rugby Championship games with South African sides the Sharks and Stormers.

Confirmed: Johan Ackermann keeps Jake White's assistants

New Bulls coach Johan Ackermann has retained the assistant coaches who served under his predecessor, Jake White. According to The Citizen, there was speculation about whether the former Lions, Gloucester and Urayasu coach would shake things up at the Bulls following White's divisive final weeks at the Pretoria union, the assistant coaches' role in his removal, and the potential redundancy of forwards coach Andries Bekker. Ackermann keeps Bekker under contract The Bulls were South Africa's most successful union under White, reaching three United Rugby Championship finals in the last four years. But after this season's final defeat to Leinster, White told media he simply could not beat the Irish side with the players he had. It later emerged that players and coaches were unhappy with White's leadership, which followed a more top-down and autocratic style. Assistant coaches Chris Rossouw and Bekker led the way in taking players' grievances directly to the board, which ultimately agreed to part ways with White last month. It did not take long to replace him. Ackermann wrapped up his time consulting the Junior Springboks following their World Rugby U20 Championship win and, on the same day he returned to South Africa, paid a visit to Loftus Versfeld. New Bulls boss brings a different approach Ackermann's coaching career is also filled with accolades – including three SA coach of the year awards and another in Japan – as well as several tournament final defeats. However, he brings a more unified and open approach to coaching. He told media in his first press conference that he wanted to hear players' opinions but made it clear they would still need to earn their places. Earlier today, the Bulls confirmed to The Citizen that Ackermann has opted to keep White's coaching staff under contract. This is especially notable for Bekker, as Ackermann was expected to take a more hands-on role with the forwards – a department where he has previously been instrumental. Ackermann also said he would observe Phiwe Nomlomo as he continues coaching the Bulls' Currie Cup side before making any tactical suggestions. The Bulls currently top the Currie Cup log with 10 points from their first two games. They hammered the Sharks 64–0 at Loftus over the weekend, following a 48–23 win against Western Province in Cape Town the week before.
