Tata Motors has created quite a few legends over the years — the Tata Sierra, the Tata Estate, and of course, the iconic Tata Safari. While the Sierra and Estate were discontinued long ago, the Safari managed to soldier on, thanks to its rugged ability and loyal fan base. It was also the enthusiast's favourite, largely because it came with 4x4 technology. However, the newer generation Safari dropped this much-loved feature, leaving purists disappointed. Delhi's MCD's electric vehicle fleet gathers dust
New Delhi: At a time when Delhi govt is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mobility and preparing to roll out the revamped Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is drawing flak for its unused fleet of electric cars, which have reportedly remained idle for over two and a half years. The subject came up during the recent MCD standing committee meeting, where Vasant Kunj councillor Jagmohan Mehlawat expressed concern at the prolonged disuse of the EVs. 'When the central govt is promoting electric mobility to curb pollution, why have these vehicles remained unutilised? Were they distributed to officials? If so, why aren't they being used, especially after crores of rupees were spent on their procurement?' he asked. A visit by TOI to the Civic Centre basement on Friday revealed rows of electric vehicles parked side by side along with a few fuel-based ones. All were labelled 'Government of India' and appeared unused, covered in layers of dust and clearly lacking maintenance. Several vehicles showed signs of wear and tear, with a few in visibly dilapidated condition, signifying their prolonged neglect. The fleet was procured in 2018 by the erstwhile South Delhi Municipal Corporation and includes 75 EVs, of which 32 were procured in the first batch and 43 in the second. In collaboration with the New Delhi Municipal Council, charging stations were also installed at over 30 prime locations across the city to support the transition towards cleaner alternatives in transportation. While MCD officially declined to comment on why the vehicles remained unused, sources within the corporation suggested that technical glitches had rendered many of the cars non-functional and officials reportedly believed that restoring the fleet would not prove cost-effective. Because of this, the EVs were unlikely to be repurposed. Instead of procuring a new batch of vehicles, MCD is now considering rental-based EV services as a more practical and economical option.

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) on Thursday announced plans to reduce its managerial workforce by several hundred positions through a 'limited' voluntary redundancy program. The move is aimed at aligning its leadership structure more closely with the company's evolving business strategy in the luxury automotive segment. The UK-based car manufacturer, which has been under pressure from US President Donald Trump's tariff wars, welcomed the recent trade deal that eases some pressure on its automotive exports to the American market. Tata Motors Layoff The number of jobs set to be hit is estimated at around 500 amid high American tariffs which were cut to 10 per cent under the US-UK trade agreement, a rate only covering cars made in the UK. The trade deal terms also cap total annual car exports to the US at 100,000 models, with the higher rate applying to any vehicles crossing that mark. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had chosen the UK headquarters of JLR in the West Midlands region to deliver a key speech back in May to reassure staff amid the US trade wars. As news of the job cuts emerged, Downing Street said JLR was 'responding to challenging global conditions'. It comes as JLR ceased production of most Jaguar models ahead of a complete relaunch expected next year. In November 2024, the carmaker unveiled a bold rebrand featuring a pink concept car and replacing its big cat logo with a capital J. JLR On VR Programme However, the latest figures released last week had revealed a drop in sales in the April to June quarter which had witnessed a temporary pause in shipments to the US amid high tariffs of 25 per cent on cars. 'JLR regularly offers eligible employees voluntary redundancy (VR) programmes,' a JLR spokesperson said. 'Through this limited UK VR programme for managers, JLR is aligning its leadership workforce for the business's current and future needs. We are grateful to the government for delivering at speed the new UK-US trade deal, which gives us the confidence to invest GBP 3.5 bn per annum to realise our strategy which is delivering,' the spokesperson said.
