LHC summons Punjab govt, Pemra officials on PECA pleas
Justice Farooq Haider presided over the hearing, where the federal government submitted its responses to the petitions. However, the Punjab government and PEMRA failed to provide their replies, drawing the court's criticism, Express News reported.
During the proceedings, a lawyer representing the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) requested additional time to submit their response, but Justice Haider warned that the law would take its course if the court's queries remained unanswered by the next hearing.
The court adjourned the hearing until March 13, 2025.
The government strengthened Peca with new amendments to tackle fake news and unlawful online content. The proposed Electronic Crimes Prevention (Amendment) Act 2025 introduced severe penalties, including up to three years in prison and fines of Rs2 million for spreading disinformation.
Last week, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that the original draft of the recent amendments to Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) was very strict, but his party suggested many changes to dilute it, Express News reports.
In an interview after addressing the Oxford Union, the PPP chairman stated that the PPP has always been against the original draft of Peca law, adding that former prime minister Imran Khan was the first to try such a harsh legislation.

PTI urges judiciary to 'rise above pressure'
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi to ensure impartial and conscience-driven decisions in all pending political cases. Addressing a press conference, senior PTI leaders Sardar Latif Khosa and Intezar Hussain Panjutha accused the state of orchestrating baseless cases against the party leaders and workers following the May 9 events, and warned that suppressing the public mandate could push the country toward a political catastrophe reminiscent of 1971. Khosa said that the two-year anniversary of PTI founder Imran Khan's detention was approaching on August 5, adding that despite predictions he would not survive two days in jail, the incarcerated party supremo remains firm. "Even a child knows today who the real looters are," he said. "The authorities don't even allow Khan's sisters, wife, and children to meet him." He asserted that the Supreme Court had already declared Imran Khan's arrest unconstitutional but lamented that no action has been taken to this day. "False cases are being registered against PTI workers nationwide," he said. "May 9 is being exploited as a pretext for political victimisation." Khosa maintained that the people still see Imran as their prime minister. He warned that history will one day put current power holders in the dock. "You will be answerable for the humiliation and persecution you have inflicted. We urge the judiciary to decide according to their conscience. Those acting beyond their constitutional authority must be held accountable." Moreover, Khosa also condemned the treatment of PTI's Dr Yasmin Rashid, who was brought to court from hospital despite her poor health. "What difference would it have made if she stayed two more days in the hospital?" he asked. He warned that circumstances similar to 1971 are being created again by disregarding the public's electoral will. "An undeclared emergency has been in place for the last three years. From day one, the objective behind the May 9 cases was to dismantle PTI's government," he alleged. "On May 7, an orchestrated conspiracy involved an attack on a Corps Commander's residence and martyrs' memorials, but no PTI leader was physically present at the scene. Even the FIRs don't allege physical presence." He lamented the erosion of judicial independence. "With the 26th constitutional amendment, we subordinated the judiciary. We bled for their independence, but now verdicts are known in advance, even by the media." "We haven't learned from the 1971 tragedy, when power was denied to the winning Awami League. Today, someone who won 180 seats is in jail. This is tyranny. We will never allow our motherland to be harmed." Citing historical injustices, Khosa said, "Justice Mushtaq who sentenced [Zulfikar Ali] Bhutto has been judged by history. Judges must serve justice now."

March against 'landgrab, forced conversionof Hindu women'
The Jeay Sindh Mahaz organised an eight-kilometer-long march in Mirpurkhas on Saturday decrying corporate farming, plunder of Sindh's resources and alleged forced conversion of Hindu women. A large number of people from Hindu community also took part in the march which was led by the JSM's Chairman Riaz Ali Chandio and Nawaz Shah Badahi. Chandio reiterated that the corporate farming cannot be accepted in any form even if the Pakistan Peoples Party's Sindh government dubbed the initiative as Public Private Partnership (PPP). The JSM's leader said instead of supporting the poor farmers the provincial government is only facilitating the large corporations and that too to the detriment of the peasants. Chandio alleged that Sindh's coal, oil, water and other resources have already been sold. He rejected the proposal for constructing new dams on the pretext that Indus river's water is being released in large volume in the sea during the ongoing flood season. He deplored that Sindh's major cities like Mirpurkhas still lacked public sector universities but the Sindh govt is planning to build a university in Punjab from the funds generated by selling the state's land to Bahria Town Karachi. Chandio reiterated that the country's law does not allow marriage of underage girls yet Hindu girls aged 14 to 15 years solemnize marriages and change their religions. Chenab dam The convener of Save Indus River Movement Syed Zain Shah, who is also head of Sindh United Party (SUP) has condemned the federal government's proposal to build Chenab dam in Punjab. He asserted in a statement on Saturday that the govt's plan is yet another move to rob Sindh of its due share of Indus water. He blamed the PPP and PMLN for being hands in glove with the establishment in making such plans.
