The crazy list of prospects — and eventual stars — Padres GM A.J. Preller has traded

New York Post2 days ago
The Padres were one of the most aggressive buyers in the 2025 MLB trade deadline.
They added seven MLB players to their roster Thursday, including star reliever Mason Miller and slugging lefty Ryan O'Hearn.

But to get names like those, the Padres had to give away players from their farm system — something the team hasn't been shy about over the past few years.
Here is a list of some of the prospects that general manager A.J. Preller traded away in his tenure as Padres general manager.

The crown jewel in the trade with the A's for Miller and starter J.P. Sears was the highest-ranked prospect traded at the deadline. According to MLB.com Pipeline, De Vries — shortstop — ranks as the third-best prospect in the league.
In High-A ball, De Vries has a slash line of .245/.354/.408. He is also a switch-hitter and is regarded as a good fielder and baserunner. He is only 18 years old, so there is still a lot more time to develop before his arrival in the big leagues.

Turner was involved in a three-team trade in 2014 that sent him to the Nationals for 2013 American League Rookie of the Year Wil Myers.
At the time of the trade, Turner was the fifth-best prospect in San Diego.
Today, Turner is a three-time All-Star playing in Philadelphia. He helped the Nationals win the World Series in 2019.

James Wood was the lowest-ranked piece in the trade deadline deal for Juan Soto in 2022. But it turns out that rankings don't always mean everything. At just 22, Wood is now arguably one of the best players on the Nationals today and was selected as an All-Star this year. He has 24 homers and 71 RBIs entering Friday.

Gore was also a part of the Soto trade in 2022. This year, with the Nationals, he has the seventh-most strikeouts in MLB with 148.
He also holds an ERA of 3.80 that earned him his first All-Star nod this year.
CJ Abrams

Another piece acquired in the Soto deal, Abrams has become the everyday shortstop for the Nationals. He was an All-Star in 2024, and this season he has a .275 average, 14 home runs, and an .817 OPS.
Max Fried

Fried was traded to the Braves in 2014 for Justin Upton. At the time, Fried was a top-50 prospect in MLB, but was recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Today, the three-time All-Star is pitching with the Yankees and is a likely Cy Young candidate. Before wearing the pinstripes, Fried was a two-time All-Star and a World Series winner in 2021 with the Braves.
Andres Munoz

Munoz was part of a trade that sent Austin Adams, Dan Altavilla and Austin Nola to San Diego from Seattle.
Today, Munoz is considered one of the best closers in the league. The two-time All-Star with an ERA of 1.32 and 24 saves.

In 2018, the Padres made a small trade with the Rangers to receive Brett Nicholas for Emmanuel Clase, who is on non-disciplinary paid leave by MLB as part of a gambling investigation.
Before this, though, Clase has been one of the best relievers in the game. He was an All-Star from 2022 to 2024, and in each of those years, he was the leader in saves in the American League.
Josh Naylor

Naylor — along with pitcher Luis Castillo — was acquired from the Marlins in 2016 for Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea. However, Castillo was just a Padre for two days as an injury to Rea forced him back to the Marlins.
Naylor, however, was traded away to the Guardians in 2020 for Mike Clevinger and Greg Allen. Naylor was an All-Star in 2024 and was traded to the Mariners by the Diamondbacks before the 2025 trade deadline.

Twins snap 4-game losing streak in 5-4 win over Guardians

Trevor Larnach had a two-run single in a four-run first inning and the Minnesota Twins beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Matt Wallner and Royce Lewis also drove in runs in the first against Joey Cantillo (2-2), who struck out a season-high nine over 5 2/3 innings. Kody Clemens' bunt single in the eighth plated DaShawn Keirsey Jr. with an insurance run. The Guardians trailed 5-2 going into the ninth, but Brayan Rocchio's pinch-hit single off Michael Tonkin scored Nolan Jones and C.J. Kayfus. Erasmo Ramírez entered and retired Daniel Schneemann and José Ramírez in order to close out the win. Minnesota snapped a four-game losing streak. Kody Funderburk (2-1) tossed two scoreless innings of relief, and Ramírez earned the save in his first big-league appearance since Aug. 30, 2024, with Tampa Bay. José Ramírez hit a two-run homer in the first and Schneemann had three hits for the second day in a row for Cleveland, which had won four straight. Kayfus doubled for his first hit in the majors, one day after being recalled from Triple-A Columbus. José Ureña, pitching for his sixth team in three years, started and gave up two runs in four innings for the Twins. Wallner and Clemens had two hits apiece.

Julio Rodriguez sets MLB record with 20+ home runs and steals in 4 consecutive seasons as Mariners beat Rangers

Julio Rodriguez homered to become the first player in major league history with 20 or more home runs and 20 or more stolen bases in each of his first four seasons, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 5-4 on Sunday. Rodriguez hit a two-run shot in the third inning — his 100th career homer — and the slugging and speedy center fielder also added his 21st stolen base of the season after singling in the fifth inning. Jorge Polanco added a solo shot in the second and shortstop J.P. Crawford smacked a two-run blast in the fourth against Rangers starter Jacob deGrom (10-4), who became the fastest pitcher in major league history to reach 1,800 career strikeouts by games and innings on Sunday. The Rangers kept things close by pushing across three runs against Mariners starter Logan Evans (5-4), but only tallied one run against the Mariners bullpen before closer Andrés Muñoz locked down his 25th save of the season. Sam Haggerty pinch-ran for Joc Pederson with one out in the ninth inning and attempted to steal second base while Wyatt Langford was batting. Haggerty was initially ruled safe, but following a replay review was ruled out. Langford struck out swinging immediately after to end the inning. Sunday was the first time deGrom has allowed three home runs or more in a game since Sept. 30, 2022, against the Atlanta Braves while he was a member of the New York Mets. Rangers left-hander Patrick Corbin (6-7, 3.78) starts Monday evening against the New York Yankees. The Mariners are off Monday, but right-hander Bryan Woo (8-6, 3.11) will start against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

Cristopher Sánchez, Kyle Schwarber lead Philadelphia Phillies past Detroit Tigers

Cristopher Sánchez pitched eight sparkling innings, Kyle Schwarber hit his 38th homer and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Sunday night. Philadelphia took two of three in the weekend series to move back into first place in the NL East, a half-game better than the New York Mets. Sánchez (10-3) surrendered five hits, struck out six and walked one. He allowed only one baserunner to reach third. Jhoan Duran handled the ninth for his second save with the Phillies and No. 18 overall. The hard-throwing closer, who was acquired in a trade with Minnesota on Wednesday, fanned Riley Greene with a 102.5 mph fastball for the final out. Schwarber made it 2-0 when he connected against Tyler Holton with two down in the eighth, hitting a 435-foot drive to center. Schwarber is tied with Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani for the NL lead in home runs. It was Schwarber's 15th homer this season off a lefty, which leads all of baseball and matches a career high for the slugger. Detroit wasted a sharp performance by Charlie Morton (7-9), who pitched six innings of one-run ball. The veteran right-hander was acquired in a trade with Baltimore on Thursday. Max Kepler drove in Philadelphia's first run with a groundout in the second. The Tigers had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, but Jahmai Jones was thrown out at the plate when he attempted to score on Andy Ibáñez's grounder to Phillies third baseman Edmundo Sosa. Sánchez has pitched at least six innings and allowed two or fewer runs in 10 of his last 11 starts. Tigers: RHP Casey Mize (9-4, 3.43 ERA) starts on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series against visiting Minnesota. Phillies: LHP Jesus Luzardo (9-5, 4.31 ERA) takes the mound on Monday night against Baltimore. LHP Cade Povich (2-5, 5.15 ERA) goes for the visiting Orioles.
