‘Sourashtra community needs representation in TN assembly'

Madurai: The Sourashtra political action committee (S-PAC) passed resolutions to revive political unity among the people in the community and provide representation of at least one candidate from Sourashtra community by all political parties in the state, during a consultative meeting in Madurai on Sunday.
Talking to reporters, K R M Kishore Kumar, a retired DGP and the convenor of the committee, said the aim of the S-PAC was to make the voice of the Sourashtra community to be heard in Tamil Nadu state assembly. "The community historically has contributed greatly for the development of Tamil Nadu, and there have been several political leaders as well in the past from the community. But, at present, there is not even one MLA from the community in the state.
Linguistic minority communities need representation and should be given due importance across political parties."
The S-PAC resolved to demand parties to allocate assembly constituencies such as Madurai South, Thiruparankundram, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Dindigul, and Salem to Sourashtra community candidates. "We are not forming a separate political party, but we believe that the Tamil community and political parties will continue to embrace us just as they have done decades," said Kishore Kumar. He added that there are around 15 lakh potential voters from the community in the state.
The S-PAC will soon be making representations to various political parties on this matter. Earlier, the S-PAC members took out a procession from the T M Soundararajan statue in Munichalai to the consultative meeting venue.

PM Modi Inaugurates Projects Worth Rs 4,800 Crore In Tamil Nadu

Thoothukudi: Landing in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi on Saturday, returning from his overseas trip, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for projects worth Rs 4,800 crore - a high-profile visit seen as both development-focused and politically significant, just eight months ahead of the state's assembly polls. The projects include a new terminal at the Thoothukudi Airport with a capacity to handle two million passengers annually, along with key infrastructure works in highways, railways, and the VOC Port in Thoothukudi. In a region known for its historic maritime strength, PM Modi aimed to underscore how modern connectivity and energy infrastructure are at the heart of the Centre's vision for Tamil Nadu. "Infrastructure and energy have been our focus for Tamil Nadu over the past 11 years. Tamil Nadu's development is India's development," PM Modi said, asserting that the state has been a consistent priority for the Centre. PM Modi also sought to strike an emotional chord with Tamil voters by invoking revered regional icons and deities - Lord Murugan of Tiruchendur Temple, freedom fighter VO Chidambaram Pillai, who challenged British shipping dominance, poet Subramania Bharathi, and Veerapandia Kattabomman, the warrior who resisted colonial rule from this region. He recounted gifting pearls from Tuticorin to Bill Gates last year - a symbolic nod to the region's famed pearl heritage and export potential. Pitching India's growing global economic footprint, the Prime Minister highlighted the recently finalised Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United Kingdom, claiming it would expand opportunities for Indian manufacturing and start-ups. "Now 91% of goods from India can be sold at lower prices in the UK," he said, adding that MSMEs, youth, and entrepreneurs will benefit significantly. "Make in India is not just a slogan - during Operation Sindoor (in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack), you saw the strength of India-made weapons that gave sleepless nights to enemies," he said. Tacitly addressing criticism from the ruling DMK and opposition parties over alleged financial bias against Tamil Nadu, PM Modi claimed the Centre had allocated Rs 3 lakh crore to the state over the past decade - three times the amount received under the UPA government. "It should be seen how much Tamil Nadu contributed then vs now, then it would expose how less Tamil Nadu gets now", DMK Spokesperson Dharaneetharan had said. PM Modi's remarks come amid sharp criticism from the DMK over the Centre allegedly withholding Rs 2,152 crore due to Tamil Nadu's refusal to implement the three-language policy - a move the state sees as Hindi imposition. The BJP has denied these allegations. Chief Minister MK Stalin, currently hospitalised, had sent a memorandum to PM Modi through Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, flagging several unfulfilled Central projects and demands for greater financial support, details of which have not been divulged yet. PM Modi's visit also includes participation in a major cultural and religious event on Sunday - the 1,000th anniversary of Chola Emperor Rajendra Chola I's maritime expedition at Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district. He will be joined by 25 Shaivite mutts in what is seen as a symbolic attempt to deepen the BJP's roots in Tamil Nadu's cultural matrix. Though mutts have limited political influence in Tamil Nadu compared to other southern states, BJP insiders say PM Modi is banking on a long-term revival of these institutions to create a cultural and religious connect - particularly with OBC and Brahmin communities historically patronised by the Chola rulers. The BJP, with negligible presence in the state, is trying to rebuild its base ahead of 2026. After breaking away from the BJP before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the AIADMK has now rekindled ties.

PM Modi can't push Hindi in Tamil Nadu: DMK leader on language row

DMK MP Kanimozhi Somu launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Tamil Nadu for the Gangaikonda Cholapuram millenary celebrations. The DMK leader questioned the Prime Minister's "selective interest" in Tamil heritage while accusing him of playing political drama ahead of next year's Assembly polls.'PM Modi says he loves and respects Tamil. Then why impose the three-language policy on us?' she asked, referring to the controversial New Education Policy that proposes Hindi as a mandatory language alongside English and the regional tongue. 'He should retract the third-language policy. Let English remain the communicating language" she also took strong exception to PM Modi carrying Ganga water to the event, calling it inappropriate for a national leader. 'He represents the entire country. He can't get into religious things. He is the Prime Minister for everyone, not for one particular community,' she said. 'He can't follow all these superstitions.' On the Keezhadi archaeological findings, which many scholars believe provide evidence of an advanced, ancient Tamil civilisation, she accused the BJP-led Centre of deliberately downplaying the discovery. 'Keezhadi will turn the whole history around and establish that Tamil is the oldest language. Modi doesn't want this. He doesn't want the Southern states to flourish,' she a sharp remark aimed at the Prime Minister, Somu said, 'He is someone who makes a child sit on his lap but also pinches it. That's the kind of split personality we are seeing. You can't pretend to honour Tamil civilisation at Gangaikonda Cholapuram while rejecting Keezhadi findings.'The DMK MP also questioned the Prime Minister's visibility in Tamil Nadu. 'He only comes during elections. And now, when elections are around the corner, he is back here. But at other times, he's out of the country. Why is he touring abroad during election season? He has walked away to some other country.'When asked about the ongoing state tour by AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami, she dismissed it as politically inconsequential.'There is a big air of confusion between the AIADMK and BJP. Amit Shah says it's a coalition, and EPS says ADMK will come to power on its own. There's no synchronization", she noted, adding 'EPS is someone who became Chief Minister through the backdoor.'- EndsMust Watch

‘Centre trying to diminish Keeladi excavation report'

'The Union government was trying to diminish the Keeladi excavation report only to prove its point that India's cultural history started from Gangetic plains,' said writer Aadhavan Dheetchanya of Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Artists Association. The forum observed a fast outside Keeladi museum here on Saturday. Mr. Dheetchanya said that by exaggerating the archaeological evidence from the Gangetic plains, it devalued the very ancient Tamil culture. 'By doing that, they try to prove that the India's history started from Aryans' entry into India,' he added. Further, he said that the Keeladi excavation report, which emphasized that civilization started about 3,500 years ago, if released, would completely shatter its 'false' narrative. 'As the study has found that Keeladi was a trade centre and the objects' age found there went back to 2,500 years, it was evident that the presence of humans and their creation of civilization was much older than that,' Mr. Dheetchanya stated. As the government, its role was only to publish the report and not to criticise or comment on the report. 'It is the role of researchers, scientists, historians and others to opine on the findings,' he noted. While the government questions the report based on several scientific studies, archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna, who penned the report after excavating remnants from 102 pits, was clear that he could not resubmit it. By not adhering to its demand, Mr. Ramakrishna had made it clear that he could not play as per its wish, Mr. Dheetchanya said. Moreover, the fight for proving the history of Tamils was not based on some rhetoric evidence, but with the support of proven facts and evidence, he said.
