'No refugees are hungry': Backlash after 'struggling' family report

US intelligence analyst Chris Wyatts has rubbished reports of an Afrikaner 'refugee' family who were allegedly left stranded in a motel without access to a phone, car, or food.
The retired army colonel shared his views hours after a TikToker's claims about the family went viral.
In recent weeks, two groups of white South Africans have taken up US President Donald Trump's offer of refugee resettlement on the grounds of 'unjust racial discrimination'. The programme is open to all racial minorities who have been 'persecuted' in SA.
In a social media post, Chris Wyatt rubbished a TikToker's claims that an Afrikaner 'refugee' family of four had been 'stranded' at a motel in Montana after arriving in the US in recent weeks.
The female TikToker – @catmpt – claimed that she had come across the family's woes in a Facebook group for South Africans living in the US. According to the woman, the 'refugees' reportedly did not have food, money, or a cellphone.
She said of the family and the group of 'refugees': 'They understood that they would be arriving here for complete assistance. People thought they would be arriving at a house, a job, medical insurance, and other things. It isn't that way at all.
She added: 'Because of the political situation, they are really struggling to get jobs'.
She added: 'Here, these people, regardless of what they were promised, just came here expecting everything'.
Responding to the woman – who has since deleted her TikTok videos – Wyatt said: 'Tell me which refugees are not getting assistance?
'It's ludicrous! They've been here for three weeks. People live in South Africa for 17 years without a job in some cases…you don't know anything. You're repeating nonsense. You're opinions mean nothing.'
Wyatt added that many in the first group of 'refugees' now reportedly had social security numbers, and one had a car and a job already. That person arrived at an apartment stocked with food.
He added, 'No refugees are going hungry, and no refugees are suffering in motels. Most of them should be in their permanent housing, as per the way the system works.' @colonelchriswyatt Why are people spreading these lies? #southafrica #refugee #program #ramaphosa ♬ original sound – Colonel Chris Wyatt
In another video, Chris Wyatt urged South Africans who had applied for the refugee resettlement programme to exercise their patience while awaiting feedback.
He also claimed that the programme was still open despite the public's uncertainty about the 'falling out' between US President Donald Trump and South African-born former right-hand man Elon Musk.
He said, 'Do you seriously think this happens overnight? Here is some advice for anxious and impatient people: get on with your lives. When the call comes, the call comes.
'It's getting incredibly frustrating. People are being offered the most amazing gift possible under the unbelievable circumstances – where no one gave a c**p and completely ignored your plight – to become quite demanding.
He added, 'Honestly, you have very unrealistic expectations about how the world works.
'You had no offer [before]. You're not paying for this. We, the American taxpayers, are paying for this….you're not entitled to this. It's not a right, it's a gift'. @edlin1344 Has the South Africa Refugee Program stopped NO#edlin1344 ♬ original sound – Edlin

Nkabane unfazed by calls for her axing over SITAs

Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane says she will not dignify direct attacks at her other than focus on the task at hand of serving the people of South Africa. Image: Facebook UNDER-FIRE Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane refused to be drawn to mounting calls for her axing, saying her task was to serve the people of South Africa. 'I am not going to dignify direct attacks on me. I am going to focus on the task at hand of serving the people of South Africa,' she said. She made the remarks when she presented her department's budget for the 2025/26 financial year in the National Assembly two days after doing so in the National Council of Provinces, where the DA, MK Party, and the EFF rejected it. The department has been allocated R142.4 billion and is set to increase at an average annual rate of 4.4% to R150 billion in the next financial year and R158 billion in 2027/28. 'This growth is not sufficient to meet growing demands for additional resources,' she said. The Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges have been allocated R14 billion, and both the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) and the National Skills Fund have a combined R26 billion. Nkabane is under growing pressure and could face legal consequences after Advocate Terry Motau, whom she named as chair of an independent SETA board advisory panel, stated that he never accepted or agreed to the position. She is being accused of misleading Parliament and manipulating the board appointment process to benefit politically connected individuals. The scandal began when Nkabane recommended a number of politically connected individuals to SETA boards. Among them were Buyambo Mantashe, son of Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe, former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube, KZN Transport head Siboniso Mbhele, and ANC Johannesburg deputy regional secretary Loyiso Masuku. She was forced to restart that process after President Cyril Ramaphosa apparently expressed his displeasure at the selection. Video Player is loading. NSFAS was allocated R48.7 billion, and its allocation will increase to R51 billion next year and R53.4 billion in 2027. She also said NSFAS remained committed to implementing a comprehensive student funding model for higher education to address the needs of the 'missing middle'. 'The National Skills Fund has set aside R3 billion over a three-year period.' Nkabane said the allocation for university education increased from R91.7 billion to R96 billion, with a R1.4 billion deficit on the universities' budget. 'We continue to work with the National Treasury to find a sustainable adjustment to the universities' budget,' she said. Tebogo Letsie, ANC MP and chairperson of the Higher Education Portfolio Committee, said they would ensure that the department, NSFAS, and universities were accountable. Letsie took a swipe at the DA for its stance to reject the department's budget because they don't believe Nkabane should be the minister. 'When you vote in 2026, remember them, they will be saying your poor child must not go to school and university because they have a problem with the minister,' he added. MK Party MP Mnqobi Msezane said they rejected the budget because they don't have confidence in the Ministry and Director-General Nkosinathi Sishi, who they claimed faced allegations of gross misconduct, fraud, and corruption, and was not suspended or investigated by Nkabane. DA MP Matlhodi Maseko said the higher education system was being systematically eroded by incompetence, deception, and the unchecked abuse of power in the system. 'The minister has repeatedly given conflicting representations to this House,' she said in reference to the SETA boards' chairperson appointment scandal and listed other challenges in the department under Nkabane's watch. Maseko said President Cyril Ramaphosa should remove Nkabane without delay. EFF's Sihle Lonzi accused the DA of cherry picking which budget to support and also criticised it for only discovering corruption in the department after former deputy minister Andrew Whitfield was fired from the executive.

‘We are family,' McKenzie says as US celebrates Independence Day

Minister said the biggest test of any relationship is overcoming a crisis Minister of sport, arts and culture Gayton McKenzie at the US embassy's 249th Independence Day celebration in Pretoria on Wednesday. Picture: X/@MrsMaswime Minister of sport, arts and culture Gayton McKenzie has brushed aside tensions between South Africa and the US, calling the two countries 'family'. McKenzie made the remarks in a keynote address at the US embassy's 249th Independence Day celebration in Pretoria on Wednesday. The Independence Day celebrations brought together diplomats, government officials and business leaders to mark the occasion. SA-US family McKenzie said the US is not just a 'friendly country to South Africa but we are family'. 'Friendships can end, but family cannot. Families fight, families differ, families irritate each other, but family is forever.' Crisis McKenzie said the biggest test of any relationship is overcoming a crisis. 'His excellency, President Donald Trump, opened the doors to the White House to hear our side of the recent controversy about farm murders and the claims of an impending genocide here. 'His excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa didn't need to do much but tell the truth and remind Potus that we are the children of Nelson Mandela. Many things might leave us, but his teachings and leadership have shaped who we have become and will still become,' McKeznzie said. ALSO READ: Afrikaner visit to US an 'attempt to sabotage' Ramaphosa's visit' – Presidency 'Kill the Boer' McKenzie said it would be dishonest of him not to address the song 'Kill the Boer'. 'Of all songs sung during the struggle, none has lost its relevance more than Kill the Boer. It has zero place in present-day South Africa. 'I came here today to tell everyone that we ask not to be judged by the worst among us but by the best,' McKenzie said, urging a focus on unity, shared values and common purpose. 'Lessons for SA' McKenzie said America's founding still offers timeless lessons to South Africa. 'The Declaration of Independence's claim that 'all men are created equal' inspired our own anti-apartheid struggle. The US constitution shaped our 1996 constitution. 'America's motto, E Pluribus Unum—'Out of many, one'—mirrors our rainbow nation vision, expressed in the |Xam language of our own motto as 'Diverse people unite'. Both our nations value diversity and freedom,' McKenzie said. ALSO READ: Trump changes tune and 'agrees' to participate in G20 Summit, Ramaphosa says US-SA values US chargé d'affaires David J Greene said the day was a chance to reflect on the values that underpin both nations. 'Independence Day is a time to reflect on the ideals of the American story: liberty, democracy, opportunity. The right of each person to determine their own destiny. These are values that Americans hold dear and ones that resonate here in South Africa – a nation with its own proud, living legacy of fighting for freedom and for fundamental rights for all citizens.' Ideals Greene said the shared ideals between the two countries undergird a longstanding partnership – 'one that spans diplomacy, development and security. And of course, the pursuit of prosperity'. 'South Africa is a continental leader in sports, the arts, and culture – three sectors that are the soul of a nation, define its global image and are increasingly vital to its economy. From Soweto stages to sports arenas, from Cape Town filmmakers to Durban fashion designers, South Africa is setting trends and exporting talent across the globe.' Greene said these industries also help power SA's commercial diplomacy. 'May our shared journey continue – with courage, creativity and common purpose,' Greene said. Gayton on son's PSL club purchase: 'My family has the resources'

Minister of Sport, Art and Culture Gayton McKenzie has broken his silence on his son Calvin Le John's purchase of PSL soccer club, SuperSport United. The R50 million purchase, via a consortium, took place during a closed bidding process. Calvin, also a prominent businessman, dropped his father's last name in recent years. He plans to change its name to Siwelele FC and fill the void of the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic, which later became Royal AM. Speaking to eNCA's Percy Young, Gayton McKenzie addressed the contentious issue of his son Calvin Le John's purchase of SuperSport United. The Minister of Sport insisted that he was not involved in the closed bidding deal. He said: 'I'm at arm's length. But there are family members who dug into their pockets and got the team, they got SuperSport United. 'But there's no link to me, and there shouldn't be a link. 'My involvement was actively, publicly telling South Africans that I was going to make sure that Siwelele returns to the Free State. It's about to happen.' Gayton jokingly added: 'As a minister, when I get reshuffled, I will go look for a job there, as a mascot'. While Gayton McKenzie claims he was not involved in the SuperSport United deal, he does hope that the club will fill a void left by his favourite PSL club, Bloemfontein Celtic. He continued: 'The only time my family was together, and the only time my father hugged me, was when Celtic scored a goal. It's very emotional for my family. My son has taken over my family business, because as a minister, we're not allowed to have businesses. Gayton McKenzie's son has purchased PSL club SuperSport United. Images via X 'He was at the deathbed of my father, and the last thing he spoke about was Celtic. 'We can't sit here when my family has the resources…people in the Free State are suffering. That can never happen'. Last month, Gayton McKenzie, in his capacity as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, vowed that Bloemfontein Celtic, under its nickname Siwelele, would return to the PSL. What he did not mention was his son's investment. He told reporters: 'I'm still meeting the people who will fulfill that promise. Siwelele or Phunya Sele Sele is coming back. I can promise. I can't make promises that I can't keep as a minister. I'm a politician. He added: 'They are on track, and I trust them absolutely because I know them.' 'I asked them if they were still on track with bringing Celtic back. They said they are 100% on track to bring Celtic back'. According to , Free State businessman Edward Modise owns the naming rights to Bloemfontein Celtic. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 .
