Anwar, Meloni pledge closer ties
ROME: Enhanced cooperation in the field of trade, investment and defence were among the topics discussed when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for an hour at Chigi Palace following his official visit to Italy.
'Had a productive and meaningful meeting with PM Meloni where we reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening Malaysia-Italy relations,' Anwar said following the meeting, where they talked about deepening strategic collaboration across key sectors.
'We also exchanged views on critical regional and global developments.
'As chair of Asean, I highlighted Malaysia's role in enhancing Asean's engagement with key international partners such as Italy and the European Union,' he said in a press conference yesterday.
'It was a meaningful meeting with PM Meloni, which has opened the door to more comprehensive and productive bilateral discussions on strategic investments, defence, sustainable energy and the development of high-tech industries such as semiconductors, electric vehicles and artificial intelligence.
'I welcome the investments by leading Italian companies such as Leonardo, Fincantieri and ENI in Malaysia, and welcome the participation of Italian companies in our Special Economic Zones, as well as the implementation of industry training programmes which focus on sharing of expertise and technology transfer,' he added.
Anwar's Malaysian delegation comprised Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Malaysia's Ambassador to Italy Datuk Zahid Rastam.
Also present were Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, and Diplomatic Advisor Fabrizio Saggio.

Secrecy of JAC proceedings must not be compromised — Hafiz Hassan
JULY 7 — Acting Chief Justice Datuk Seri Hasnah Hashim had reportedly called for an urgent meeting of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC), according to sources. The unnamed source stated that the meeting was scheduled for 3pm on July 4, despite Section 13(2) of the JAC Act 2009 requiring at least 10 days' written notice to be given to commission members. 'The purpose of the urgent meeting is unclear,' a source said. It is concerning that the sources cited Section 13(2) of the JAC Act but ignored Section 32 of the same Act. Section 32 mandates and obligates every member, officer and servant of the JAC to secrecy in the course of his duties, whether during or after his tenure of office or employment. According to the author, the acting Chief Justice Datuk Seri Hasnah Hashim must act against the sources if they contravene Section 32. — Picture by Yusof Mat Isa If the Acting Chief Justice had called for a meeting not in compliance with Section 13(2), then it is members of JAC who must raise it with the Acting Chief Justice. These members are no ordinary folks. They are learned people of the law. It is, again, concerning that the sources should disclose the alleged call for an urgent meeting to the media when Section 32(1) says that no member, officers and servants of JA 'shall disclose any information or document obtained by him in the course of his duties'. Section 34(4) says any person who contravenes the provision 'commits an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding one hundred thousand ringgit or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or to both.' The Acting Chief Justice must act against the sources if they contravene Section 32. DAP rep claims Sarawak's 17-seat increase is ‘gerrymandering' in disguise
KUCHING, July 7 — The proposal to increase the number of elected representatives in the State Legislative Assembly from 82 to 99 is 'not only untimely, but unfair, unnecessary and politically motivated,' said Violet Yong (DAP-Pending). Yong argued that the move fails to address pressing issues faced by the rakyat, such as high cost of living, poor infrastructure and lack of basic amenities. 'At a time when many Sarawakians are struggling with the rising cost of living, inadequate roads, no electricity, no clean water supply, and poor access to basic services, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government has chosen to prioritise adding more politicians instead of addressing the people's real needs,' she said during the debate on Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill, 2025 today. Yong further questioned the justification for the increase, noting that while voter numbers had grown significantly due to automatic voter registration and Undi18, the surge was concentrated in urban and semi-urban areas. 'But does this justify a sudden 20 per cent jump in state seats? The answer is a resounding no, because the increase in voters is not evenly spread 'It is concentrated in urban and semi-urban areas, where people are migrating for jobs, education, and opportunities. Yet, this Bill does absolutely nothing to address their underrepresentation,' she said. Yong accused the government of manipulating the system under the guise of 'representation,' claiming that the proposal 'once again favours rural areas' rather than redrawing boundaries to reflect demographic realities, a move she called illogical and unfair. She also raised concerns about unequal voter representation across constituencies. 'In my own constituency, Pending, there are nearly 30,000 voters. Gedong, a rural seat, has less than 10,000. Yet both elect one ADUN (state assemblyperson),' she said. Yong claimed the seat expansion was politically driven, noting that during the redelineation exercise in 2015, most new seats went to Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), a pattern she believes is likely to repeat. 'Let's call it what it is: GPS is adding new seats only where it can win, not where they're actually needed based on voter numbers. This is gerrymandering dressed up as reform,' she said. She also warned of the financial burden, saying millions would be spent on salaries, facilities and operations while many rural communities still lack clean water and electricity. Yong concluded by questioning the silence of Sarawak's GPS federal ministers on the matter and called for more meaningful reforms. 'What have our five federal ministers from Sarawak GPS done in Parliament to fight for more parliamentary seats for Sarawak? Pay up or lose your assets: Errant ex-husbands face seizures, frozen income under Selangor's proposed crackdown on ‘nafkah' dodgers
SHAH ALAM, July 7 — Seizure of assets is among the mechanisms being considered by the Selangor government against husbands who evade and default on court-ordered nafkah (financial support) maintenance. State Islamic Religious Affairs and Cultural Innovation Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said other proposed measures include income withholding orders, garnishment orders, and the sale of property belonging to defaulters. 'The selection of an appropriate and efficient mechanism by the party seeking maintenance, especially the ex-wife or children's guardian, is a crucial factor in ensuring the successful enforcement of maintenance orders. 'Failure to choose the right channel or mechanism can cause delays, confusion, and ultimately jeopardise the rights of the maintenance recipient,' he told the State Assembly today. He was responding to an oral question from Mariam Abdul Rashid (PH-Meru) on efforts by the state government to strengthen state laws and enable stricter action against those who evade maintenance payments. Mohammad Fahmi said the state government, through the Syariah Judicial Department (Jakess), is also exploring strategic collaboration opportunities with other agencies such as the National Registration Department, the Inland Revenue Board, and financial institutions to assist in the process of tracing and seizing the assets of individuals who have defaulted on maintenance orders. 'The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais), together with Jakess, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), academics, and Shariah legal experts, are currently reviewing and proposing amendments to the Islamic Family Law Enactment (Selangor State) 2003 to improve provisions related to the enforcement of maintenance orders,' he said. He also told the State Assembly that 1,189 complaints of maintenance violations had been received by the Selangor State Family Support Division since 2022 until May 31 this year. — Bernama
