Bengal Everester goes missing on way down
Subrata Ghosh
probably disappeared in what is referred to by climbers as the 'death zone', near the summit, while descending to Camp IV, the final stop on way to the 8,849-metre peak. A search and recovery operation is likely to start by Sunday but seasoned climbers that TOI spoke to were not very hopeful of his survival.
'We are yet to get details of what happened to Ghosh. The sherpa who was with him suddenly realised he was not there. The sherpa's condition was also very bad. He is still hallucinating,' said Bodhraj Bhandari, managing director of Kathmandu-based
Snowy Horizon Treks
, which organised the expedition.

Madhya Pradesh stampede: 2 women crushed at religious event at Kubreshwar Dham; crowd surged during Kanwar Yatra ritual
Bhopal: A religious gathering convened by self-styled godman Pradeep Mishra at Kubreshwar Dham in Sehore turned tragic on Tuesday morning, as a stampede-like situation claimed two lives and left several others injured. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident occurred around 10.30 am during a congregation that drew thousands of devotees, many of whom arrived for Mishra's Kanwar Yatra, scheduled for August 6. Mishra also organises rudraksha distribution events—rituals that previously drew large crowds and caused traffic chaos in the region. Thousands of devotees from across the country gathered on Tuesday at the Seewan River ghat and Kubreshwar Dham for pre-yatra rituals, including bhandaras, overnight stays, and temple visits. As the crowd swelled and humidity levels rose, several people reportedly fell ill due to suffocation, panic, and lack of space. Sources said the heavy crowd triggered chaos near the temple complex and rest spots, with several devotees fainting due to heat and overcrowding. In one instance, three people reportedly fell during a sudden crowd surge, and two were crushed in the melee, resulting in their deaths. 'Two women have died, and around half a dozen people sustained injuries. The situation is now under control. More than 200 personnel were deployed, and we have increased the deployment further. Traffic diversions, which were planned for August 6, have already been implemented. Currently, there is a crowd of around 60,000, and the influx is ongoing. A large number of women devotees are present,' SP Sehore Deepak Shukla told TOI. 'Both deceased women were aged above 50 and are residents of Maharashtra. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Their exact identities are being verified. As of now, there is no change in the scheduled Yatra for August 6,' he added. 'As soon as we received the information, officials rushed to the spot. The crowd was dispersed, and the situation was brought under control,' said Shukla. Kubreshwar Dham has witnessed rising footfall in recent years, particularly during rudraksha distribution and yatra events led by Pradeep Mishra, often leading to significant traffic disruptions and logistical challenges in Sehore and adjoining areas. In June 2023, a woman collapsed at the site due to heat and humidity, and in March last year, a tent collapse left several injured, according to sources.

Dharmasthala ‘secret burials': Judge who issued media gag order recuses from hearing case
The Bengaluru court judge who issued a gag order on media reports against the family of the Sree Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara temple administration in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada, in connection with investigations into alleged secret burials in the region, has recused himself from hearing the case. The recusal comes in the wake of an application by a journalist indicating that the judge is an alumni of an institution operated by the temple administration. On Monday, the principal sessions judge allowed the 10th additional city civil and sessions judge Vijaya Kumar Rai to recuse himself from hearing the original suit filed by Harshendra Kumar D on behalf of the family. 'Pursuant to the request made by this court to transfer this suit to any other court, the Honourable Principal City Civil and Sessions Judge has withdrawn this suit and transferred to the court of XVII Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge, Bengaluru, for disposal in accordance with law as per the notification…dated 04.08.2025,' judge Rai said in an order on Monday. 'In view of this, the registry shall forward the entire records of this case to the XVII Civil and Session Judge, Bengaluru (CCH-16),' he said. The judge had passed a gag order on media reports about the family members of the temple administration amid a public controversy that has gripped the temple town following a former sanitation worker's allegations that he was forced to bury several dead bodies in the region during the 1995-2014 period. The Karnataka High Court had also recently referred the July 18 gag order of the civil court back to the court on account of its blanket nature, rather than merely restricting defamatory reporting against the Sree Dharmasthala temple administration. The recusal comes after journalist Naveen Soorinje, who is defendant number 25 of the 240 media outlets and activists named in the suit, indicated a conflict of interest for the court on account of the judge having studied at SDM Law College 25 years ago. Earlier, the Bengaluru civil court had granted an ex parte injunction to 'delete/de-index' a total of 8,812 links on various platforms related to the Dharmasthala secret burials case. The injunction order on July 18 was based on a petition filed by Harshendra Kumar D, brother of BJP MP D Veerendra Heggade and secretary of the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational Society. The petition had sought directions to 'remove/delete/deindex the unverified false, baseless, reckless and defamatory allegations' against the plaintiff, his brother Heggade and his family members, the temple, and the institutions run by them. On August 1, the Karnataka High Court quashed the gag order with reference to the Mangaluru-based online media channel Kudla Rampage, stating that the civil court 'has ventured to grant a sweeping mandatory injunction, a relief which ordinarily ought to await the culmination of the trial.'

Kochi IT Executive Accused Of Sexual Harassment After Filing Blackmail Case
A week after a top IT executive filed a complaint against his former employee and her husband for allegedly blackmailing and threatening him for a substantial sum of money, a case was registered against him on Tuesday following a counter-complaint by the woman, accusing him of sexual harassment. This fresh development comes just a week after a local court granted bail to the Kochi-based couple, only hours after they were taken into custody by the Ernakulam Central Police. The duo, identified as Krishna Raj and his wife, allegedly blackmailed and trapped Venu Gopalakrishnan -- the CEO of Litmus7, a leading IT firm based in the Infopark campus -- forcing him to transfer Rs 50,000 into their bank account. According to Gopalakrishnan's complaint, the couple even coerced him into signing two cheques of Rs 10 crore each in their names. The woman had been employed at his firm but had recently resigned. Following her resignation, the couple allegedly plotted to fabricate a false case and began threatening the businessman, demanding Rs 30 crore. They warned that if he failed to pay, she would accuse him of being in an extramarital relationship with her and of sexually assaulting her. Based on Gopalakrishnan's complaint, the couple was arrested on July 30. However, they were granted bail later the same day. The latest development came on Tuesday, when the Kochi police registered a case against Gopalakrishnan following the woman's complaint, accusing him of sexual harassment and issuing threats. In her complaint, she stated that it was only after she expressed her intention to file a complaint against Gopalakrishnan with the internal complaints committee of the IT firm that he allegedly framed them in a false honey trap case. With a case now registered against Gopalakrishnan, alongside the ongoing investigation into the couple, the two separate probe teams are reportedly considering a coordinated approach to move the investigations forward.
