Oman: New professional titles added to the hotel and resort sector
These titles have been included in the Unified Gulf Guide for Occupational Classification and Description, and have been classified and distributed according to approved economic activities in the tourism sector, including hotels, resorts, hotel facilities, rest houses, chalets, heritage inns, and guest houses.
These new titles provide employers and tourism establishments with broader options and greater precision in determining their workforce needs, contributing to the development of institutional performance and raising the efficiency of human resources in this vital sector.
The approved job titles include several administrative and technical positions, such as Hotel General Manager, Resort General Manager, Resort Manager, Procurement Manager, Security and Safety Manager, Information Technology Manager, Security Manager, Finance Manager, Events Coordinator, Reservations Supervisor, Airport Services Representative, Guest Relations Clerk, and Audit Supervisor.
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism confirms that this step comes within the framework of joint coordination with the Ministry of Labor to support development in the tourism sector and create an appropriate environment for growth and investment, in line with the aspirations of Oman Vision 2040, which places tourism among the priorities of economic diversification.

Jordan has slump in visitors to Petra during Gaza war
Jordan has had a sharp drop in visitors to its ancient city of Petra and other sites since war broke out in Gaza almost two years ago, it was revealed on Monday. Figures released by the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority show visitors dropping from almost 1.2 million in 2023 to fewer than 460,000 last year – a decrease of about 61 per cent. "We feel the repercussions of the aggression on Gaza every day, especially for providers of tourism services," Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat, the director of the national tourism board, told TV channel Al Mamlaka. Mr Arabiyat said tourism from Europe and North America has hit a record low, dealing a devastating blow to the hotel industry and tour operators around Petra, in Jordan's south. According to figures from the Petra tourism authority carried by official media, 32 hotels have had to shut down and almost 700 people have lost their jobs. Although Jordan does not share a border with Gaza, it is among many countries across the Middle East affected by the war between Israel and Hamas. The kingdom has worked with the UAE to fly food into Gaza and sought to use its diplomatic influence to bring about a ceasefire. Petra, famous for its stunning temples hewn from rose-pink cliff faces, is a Unesco world heritage site. The Jordanian economy relies on revenues from the kingdom's tourism sector, which accounts for 14 per cent of gross domestic product. Jordan's tourism board had hoped to keep numbers steady from a pre-war figure of 5.4 million visitors a year across the country. Mr Arabiyat told The National in May 2024 that "we need to at least maintain this number this year, and we hope it will not decrease". Last August, it was revealed that Middle East plane tickets issued in a 10-day period during the height of summer were seven per cent down year on year, with Jordan and Lebanon suffering the biggest drops.

Boeing St. Louis defence workers set to strike from Monday after rejecting latest offer
Union members who assemble Boeing's fighter jets in the St. Louis area rejected the U.S. planemaker's latest contract offer on Sunday and will strike at midnight on Monday, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union (IAM) said. "IAM District 837 members ... deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation's defense," the union's Business Representative Tom Boelling said. Boeing said it was ready for the action. "We are prepared for a strike and have fully implemented our contingency plan," Boeing Air Dominance vice president and general manager Dan Gillian said in an emailed statement to Reuters. "We're disappointed our employees in St. Louis rejected an offer that featured 40% average wage growth," he added. Boeing's original proposal included a 20% general wage increase over four years and a $5,000 ratification bonus, as well as more vacation time and sick leave. The union had rejected the offer, saying it was insufficient. Last week, Boeing sent a new contract offer to the union with some minor compensation changes that would benefit senior union members, according to the company. The offer also kept current overtime policies, which Boeing had proposed modifying in the last contract offer. The workers assemble Boeing's fighter jets and the MQ-25, an aerial refueling drone being developed for the U.S. Navy. Boeing's defense division is expanding manufacturing facilities in the St. Louis area for the new U.S. Air Force fighter, the F-47A, after it won the contract this year. The upcoming strike by the union, representing 3,200 employees, would be much smaller than the one Boeing was hit with last fall, when 33,000 machinists at Boeing's commercial plane division walked out for nearly two months. That strike ended with approval of a four-year contract that included a 38% wage increase.
