Stirling Council to start posting on Facebook again - despite no updates in months
The council has not made any new posts on the channel - one of its main platforms for providing information - since March, but said it will resume posting there after work to "maximise its capabilities" is comnplete
Stirling Council says it will resume posting updates for residents via its Facebook page, despite making no new posts in more than two months.
The council hasn't posted any fresh content on the platform – one of its main platforms for providing information – since March 24 this year.
Despite the lack of content issued to residents, the authority says that it will resume posting there after Facebook's parent company, Meta, 'works on' the page to 'maximise its capabilities'.
A Stirling Council spokesperson this week told the Stirling Observer: 'Stirling Council's main Facebook page is currently being worked on by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, to ensure we can maximise its capabilities and while this is undertaken we won't be posting on the page.
'The main account is just one of many social media sites the council manages and information on services and events will continue to be posted and promoted across those and a range of other mechanisms.
'We hope to have the main Facebook page back up and running as soon as possible.'
The Stirling Council Facebook page has more than 30,000 followers.
The council has continued to post updates and information on X, formerly Twitter, regularly.
Back in February this year, the council said it would 'keep under constant review' its use of X after some Scots councils quit the platform over the 'dissemination of harmful and extremist content'.
South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) revealed that it was to stop posting on the platform – except for emergency alerts – due to 'widespread public concerns that X now allows the promotion and dissemination of harmful and extremist content, including content that is unlawful, abusive or false'.
It was agreed that SLC would continue to use the platform for the time being, but only for the sharing of alerts that provide information that local residents need to know immediately – such as school or road closures, extreme weather events or other issues that impact on council services.
The Stirling Observer asked Stirling Council whether it had any plans to follows suit and cease its use of the site. A council spokesperson at that time said: 'X, formerly known as Twitter, is one of a large number of mechanisms used to communicate information to ensure residents are informed about local services and we promote the council to a wide visitor and business audience.
'These are incorporated into the communications mix as part of our commitment that communications from the council are clear, easy to access and understand, appropriate to the audience and that all communications mechanisms used are done so in a consistent way.
'There are no current plans to stop using X but all channels are kept under constant review for their effectiveness as mechanisms in reaching audiences across Stirling Council and wider areas and managed through the council's media policy to ensure their effectiveness.'
Stirling Council currently has almost 30,000 followers on X.
Earlier in February, Edinburgh City Council was urged to cease its use of X. Green councillor Chas Booth put forward a motion calling for use of the site to be discontinued.
A number of councils and organisations, including Renfrewshire Council, Devon County Council, North Somerset Council and others, took the decision to stop using X.
X lost millions of active users after controversial tycoon Elon Musk completed a $40billion takeover of the platform in October 2022.

Jacqui Smith, the UK Equalities Minister, said she did not believe the BBC was biased on the war in Gaza but warned a line had been crossed during its Glastonbury coverage. The Israeli Embassy in the UK said it was 'deeply disturbed' by what it called 'inflammatory and hateful' rhetoric at the festival. Police in Somerset, where the festival is held, said the force was 'aware of the comments made by acts' and that 'video evidence will be assessed by officers to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation.' But that position was questioned by Scottish Green MSP Ross Greer. He said: "Not one person demanding that Bobby Vylan is arrested for his 'Death to the IDF' chant has said anything about the British citizens serving in the IDF who have committed actual war crimes in Palestine. "If you think a chant is more criminal than murder and genocide, get a grip." In a statement, the BBC said: 'Millions of people tuned in to enjoy Glastonbury this weekend across the BBC's output but one performance within our livestreams included comments that were deeply offensive. The BBC respects freedom of expression but stands firmly against incitement to violence. 'The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves. We welcome Glastonbury's condemnation of the performance. 'The performance was part of a live stream of the West Holts stage on BBC iPlayer. 'The judgment on Saturday to issue a warning on screen while streaming online was in line with our editorial guidelines. 'In addition, we took the decision not to make the performance available on demand. The team were dealing with a live situation, but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen.'

DWP welfare cuts to result in 150,000 in poverty - despite major U-turn

Theatrics of Unionist duo on Question Time were cringeworthy
Both Bowie and especially Sarwar are the perfect examples of everything that is wrong with Scotland when it comes to Scots attacking all things Scottish for their London puppet masters. To be fair to him, Andrew Bowie at least comes across like he has some manners and a warped kind of dignity, but Anas Sarwar came across as a totally spoilt wee brat who constantly tried to speak over the presenter and ignore all efforts to rein him in as he delivered his usual absolute drivel trying to rubbish the NHS staff and constantly mentioning the ferries, as he completely ignored the enormously damaging and farcical decisions from down south that are hundreds of times more costly. READ MORE: Question Time called out as Reform councillor on St Andrews panel It was an absolutely pathetic spectacle to have to watch, and the only thing more pathetic to witness was the tiny wee handful of audience members who actually clapped at the end of Sarwar's constant drivel. Perhaps I am reading this wrong and they were simply clapping in delight that someone had eventually managed to take out his batteries. When, oh when, are we going to get an SNP politician who will demand to be heard, call out the downright lies, not sit down when told to until they get their point across, and to point out every much bigger failure they have made down south rather than sit meekly and accept it? On a slightly different note... Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte has told the world they will need to learn Russian if their countries do not spend tens of billions – money few of them have – on defence, which in reality is quite simply to help enrich the armament companies even more, which in turn boosts the US economy. Watching this excuse for a man sook up to the orange clown at the Nato summit really prompts the question: is the Western world full of complete clowns when it comes to leading their countries and organisations across the world? If it is not, they are certainly doing a good job of pretending they are, with the likes of what we see across the pond and over here in Westminster and now at Nato. READ MORE: Lesley Riddoch slams Labour benefits cuts on Question Time Lastly, we really have to ask ourselves what on earth are the SNP doing, only managing to gain a tiny 20% or so of the vote from the polls of people's voting intentions from across Ayrshire and the South of Scotland, whilst the reviled Tories and Farage's new party have around 50% of the intended vote between them? OK, we all know there's a hotbed of sectarianism which blights this part of the land, which would rather place a vote that damages their own family's prospects, but it also points to many people wanting to escape the absolutely monstrous mess down south but who also seem too feart to dip their toe too far into Scotland so tend to mainly stay close to the Border, judging by these results! We can all understand the move away, but for the life of me I can't understand why somehow with the cahoonas to make the move north in the first place, who can then witness the truly awful impact of the damage done to Scotland under Westminster rule with their own eyes, and then vote for more of the same! It's for the birds, it really is. There really is nowt as queer as folk. Could you imagine what could be achieved without a shower o' wee timorous beasties representing us all? Iain K Dunoon
