Media activities are officially underway ahead of the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, where Rory McIlroy once again finds himself under the spotlight.

In his Wednesday press conference, McIlroy touched on a theme he believes is underappreciated across all sports: longevity.
"I think it's one of the underappreciated things about any sport and anyone, like you look at what Novak Djokovic is doing at Wimbledon over the last couple of weeks, or what someone like Cristiano Ronaldo is still doing at 40 years old, or a Tom Brady in American football. That longevity piece, I think, is something that maybe isn't talked about enough because once you get to a certain level… it takes just as much work, if not more work, to stay there."
He added that adapting his game as he ages has become critical to remaining competitive against younger stars such as world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Since turning professional in 2007, McIlroy has amassed a significant number of professional victories, including 29 on the PGA Tour and 19 on the European Tour.
He's captured five major championships in that time, including the U.S. Open (2011), The Open Championship (2014), PGA Championship (2012, 2014) and most recently, the Masters Tournament, a win that completed the career Grand Slam.
McIlroy previously won the Scottish Open in 2023, finished fourth in 2024, and he is one of the favorites to win this year's title.

This week's event kicks off on Thursday with a field of 156 players competing for a $9 million purse, with the winner slated to pocket approximately $1.53 million.

The roster, headlined by Scheffler, McIlroy, two‑time major winner Xander Schauffele and defending champion Robert MacIntyre, promises a lot of drama and buildup for next week's Open Championship.

Charles Barkley holes out for eagle in career-best round at American Century Championship: 'I'm gunning for Steph Curry'

The days of mocking Charles Barkley's golf game appear to be truly over. The NBA Hall of Famer and TNT broadcaster made his usual entry in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament this week and posted the best round of his career in the first round at Nevada's Edgewood Tahoe Resort. Advertisement "I'm gunning for Steph Curry," Barkley said to Yahoo Sports after the match. Playing alongside comedians Nate Bargatze and Larry the Cable Guy, he shot an 81 for the day, with the 54-hole tournament's modified Stableford scoring system placing him in a tie for 24th in a 90-player field. That performance included him holing out for an eagle, cheered on by a supportive crowd. "The crowd was going crazy, man. It was unbelievable. It's been a great day," Barkley told the Peacock stream. "I thought I would play. I didn't think I would play this well ... I'm having so much fun. I've been working so hard on my game." Advertisement Put another way, Barkley was in the top third of a group of people that included several professional athletes, including Josh Allen (tied for 31st), Matthew Tkachuk (40th), Zach Lavine (59th), Baker Mayfield (75th) and Trevor Lawrence (86th). San Jose Sharks great Joe Pavelski leads the field after shooting a 70, with Curry right behind him in third. By comparison, Barkley finished in 58th place among 54-hole golfers in the 2024 tournament, 81st in 2023, 74th in 2022, 76th in 2021, 88th in 2019 and dead last in 2018. He also finished last in 2017, 2016, 2014, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006. It is a testament to patience and perseverance, not to mention love for a sport which requires both, that a man is looking at the majority of the field behind him in an event where he has finished last that many times. Many fans will remember just how bad this used to be. In case you need a reminder, here is one of his better swings from around 2010. With the mother of all swing hitches — some would just call it the yips — Barkley was so bad at golf that Tiger Woods' swing coach Hank Haney was enlisted to help him out. This man went on Saturday Night Live and let them mock his swing to his face. Advertisement His swing gradually improved over the years. He showed off a hitch-less swing in 2018 and even played on the winning team in an iteration of The Match in 2020 (with some help from Phil Mickelson). Barkley, whose "Inside the NBA" will transition from TNT to ESPN next season, always took his struggles with public good humor and even managed to find a niche as a golf broadcaster to the point he had an offer to help call LIV Golf events. And now, he's actually posted a decent round.

That is what makes what happened at the Scottish Open highly surprising. The 2025 Genesis Scottish Open is just Chris Gotterup's second start on links courses in his professional career. His debut was also at The Renaissance Club a year ago, and it couldn't have gone worse, as he missed the cut by six strokes. However, a year later, the story is completely different. Gotterup enters the weekend of the tournament as the sole leader at 11-under. But it was his second round that turned heads, tying Bernd Wiesberger's 2019 course record (9-under 61). Gotterup started the day in full swing, carding six bogey-free birdies on the front nine to make the turn with a 29 strokes, his PGA Tour career-low nine. He then added three more bogey-free birdies on the back nine to complete one of the best rounds of his career. In fact, his second-round score improved his season-best by two strokes. His previous low score of the year was the 63 he carded in the first round of the Puerto Rico Open. That performance allowed him to climb 32 spots on the leaderboard, sitting in first place. In the first round, Gotterup posted a score of 2-under with four birdies and two bogeys. Gotterup wasn't widely tipped to do well at the Scottish Open. Before traveling to Scotland, he had played 21 PGA Tour tournaments and is still searching for his first top-10 finish of the season. Chris Gotterup: "You just take what you can get" After the second round, Chris Gotterup evaluated his performance and explained the importance of taking advantage of good opportunities to achieve a score like his: "I definitely played good today. Not a lot of wind in the morning which was obviously beneficial," he said. "But yeah, it's funny, when it flips, you get some holes that you like and some holes that you don't like and vice versa." "I think there's definitely certain holes that feel nice. Nice three pars to finish." "You just take what you can get, what the course gives you." Gotterup will start Moving Day at 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time, grouped with Harry Hall, who is second, two strokes behind the leader. Kevin Durant Reveals Big Goal for NBA Career After Rockets Trade

Kevin Durant Reveals Big Goal for NBA Career After Rockets Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kevin Durant has been around the NBA block more times than we can count after 18 seasons of breaking ankles, draining clutch threes, hoisting trophies and silencing critics. Advertisement You'd think a guy with MVPs, Finals rings and All-Star nods piled up like laundry would be content to ride off into the sunset, right? Well, not KD. Now, with a fresh start in Houston after the blockbuster Rockets trade, the basketball world is buzzing about what's next for him. And as it turns out, the one goal he's chasing might just surprise you. While speaking to LeBron James and Steven Nash at the Mind the Game podcast, Durant shared his thoughts on longevity and how long he wants to be in the league. He said, 'Some people say imma go 22 (seasons) straight…It's a contract I feel like you've gotta have with yourself. To have a long career, that's the goal. To be in the league for 20 years.' Durant even joked that once you've got a couple of rings and a few MVPs under your belt, staying hungry isn't exactly easy while also taking a little jab on Michael Jordan who played baseball after winning three NBA championships. Advertisement But for KD, hitting that 20-year mark in the league is a whole different level of greatness. He knows it takes a special kind of mindset to keep going that long and he's all in for it. Durant's shot at hitting that 20-year milestone just got a big boost thanks to one of the wildest trades the NBA's ever seen. The past weekend, the league pulled off its biggest trade ever, and at the heart of it was KD packing his bags for Houston. Seven teams and 13 players were tangled up in this blockbuster deal. Now, with a fresh jersey and a new city, Durant's longevity dream is alive and kicking.
