Large brush fire burns on Joint Base Cape Cod, smoke seen for miles
Army National Guard officials said the fire started as a planned controlled burn, which is a way to mitigate forest fires, but then the flames moved outside the designated area, turning into a brush fire.
Officials said the fire was contained on Camp Edwards.
150 acres impacted
According to the Massachusetts National Guard, 133 acres were scheduled for Thursday's burn and approximately 150 acres have been impacted.
The hazy horizon wasn't too inviting, cutting Kyle Massey's fishing trip short at the Cape Cod Canal.

"It's crazy because last week I was fishing in New Jersey and I heard about the fires and I didn't know about it then I come down here today same thing, can't' escape it," said Massey.
The windy and dry conditions were not helping as responders said the smoke drifted to several areas of Bourne.
"I work on the other military base over there, it was pretty crazy yesterday morning too, working the overnight shift, it was like poof, you couldn't even see in the parking lot," said John Frawley.
"It looks like fog, you come outside it looks like fog. Walking around Its like World War II or something," said Jonathan James.
With an extensive effort underway to put out the smoke and fire, locals waited in confidence it wouldn't be much longer.
"Just pray and keep your fingers crossed," said Frawley.
First responders asked resident not to call 911 to report the haze or smoke, saying only call if you see visible flames near you.

Russian TV shows buildings swept away as tsunami hits coast
Russian state television on Wednesday aired footage of a tsunami wave sweeping through a coastal town in the far east of the country, carrying buildings and debris into the sea. An 8.8 magnitude megaquake struck off the coast of Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula earlier, prompting evacuations and tsunami alerts across parts of the Pacific coast. In Severo-Kurilsk, a Russian town of about 2,000 people some 350 kilometres (217 miles) southwest from the earthquake's epicentre, tsunami waves crashed through the port area and submerged the local fishing plant, according to authorities. The town lies on the northern Kuril island of Paramushir, just south of the Kamchatka peninsula. The waves, which were up to four metres high in some areas, reached as far as the town's World War II monument about 400 metres (1,312 feet) from the shore line, according to Mayor Alexander Ovsyannikov. Most of the town lies on higher ground safe from flooding, he added. "Everyone was evacuated. There was enough time, a whole hour. So everyone was evacuated, all the people are in the tsunami safety zone," he said at a crisis meeting with officials earlier. An expedition group from the Russian Geographical Society was on the neighbouring island of Shumshu when the tsunami swept away their tent camp. "When the wave hit, all we could do was run to higher ground. It's very difficult to do that in boots on slippery grass and in fog," group member Vera Kostamo told Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda. "All the tents and structures were swept away by the wave, and our belongings were scattered across the beach for hundreds of metres," she added. "We have no casualties, everyone acted quickly, but we lost all our belongings." Authorities in the Sakhalin region, which includes the northern Kuril Islands, declared a state of emergency. The regional seismic monitoring service said the earthquake was the region's strongest since 1952. "Strong aftershocks with a magnitude of up to 7.5 should be expected," it added. bur/yad

Chantal's remnants could fuel storms in Boston amid heat advisory, weather maps show
The WBZ Weather Team is highlighting today and Tuesday as NEXT Weather Alert days in Massachusetts. This alert is for a combination of heat and humidity as well as a threat for scattered storms fueled by the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal in the Boston area. The National Weather Service has posted a heat advisory for most of Southern New England (away from the South Coast) until 8 p.m. Monday and may decide to re-issue for Tuesday as well. If you are feeling a little déjà vu, the timing of this heat is very similar to that boiling heatwave we had a few weeks ago. That one also started on a Sunday and now, once again, many areas will reach an official heatwave this week (Sunday-Tuesday). As of this writing, Boston is inching very close to 90 today and we are forecasting another 90 degree day on Tuesday. Add in some very "juicy" dewpoints and it will feel close to 100 degrees at times this afternoon as well as Tuesday afternoon. There will just be a few isolated downpours here and there through this evening, not expecting any organized severe weather. Where is Camp Mystic, the Christian girls camp hit by flooding in Texas?
Severe flooding hit Camp Mystic, a 99-year-old private nondenominational Christian camp for girls in the Texas Hill Country. More than 750 girls were at the camp, which is located along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, where rain of up to 12 inches an hour fell, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said in a press conference Friday afternoon. Flash flooding occurred as river waters rose 29 feet rapidly near the camp, officials said. At the time, about 20 girls were missing, Patrick said. Parents and relatives have been posting on social media as they have learned about the deaths of young family members who had been attending the camp. At least three girls have died, based on reports from family members. Live updates: Texas flooding death toll rises to 27; children among the dead Camp Mystic for Girls was founded in 1926 by Edward "Doc" Stewart, who was the football and men's basketball coach at the University of Texas, according to an Internet Archive's capture of the camp's website (much of the site was overwhelmed with traffic on Saturday). The camp has been in operation since then. However, during World War II it served as a "rehabilitation and recovery camp for army air corps veterans," according to the site. "Campers and counselors join together to sing songs, listen to scripture, discover ways to grow spiritually, and learn to apply these lessons to their daily life at camp and back home," according to the site. Religious activities include: Bible studies, Saturday evening Catholic Mass, Sunday morning devotionals along the river, Sunday evening Vespers services, and, once during each two-week or four-week term, a sunrise communion service. Other activities include cooking, dance, basketball, horseback riding, lacrosse, swimming, soccer and yoga. Camp Mystic for Girls, is in Texas, about six miles south of Hunt, Texas, in Kerr County. That's within Texas Hill Country, about 80 miles northwest of San Antonio. The original camp and a second camp, opened in 2020 near Cypress Lake, is bisected by Cypress Creek.
