Vatican beatifies Congo customs worker for resisting corruption
The Vatican on Sunday is beatifying a Congolese customs worker who was killed for resisting a bribe, giving young people in a place with endemic corruption a new model of holiness: someone who refused to allow spoiled rice to be distributed to poor people.
The head of the Vatican's saint-making office, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, is presiding over the beatification ceremony on Sunday at one of the pontifical basilicas in Rome, St. Paul Outside the Walls.
The event is drawing Congolese pilgrims and much of Rome's Congolese Catholic community, who will be treated to a special audience on Monday with Pope Leo XIV.
Floribèrt Bwana Chui Bin Kositi was kidnapped and killed in 2007 after he refused to allow rancid rice from Rwanda to be transported across the border to the eastern DR Congo city of Goma.
As an official with the Congolese government's customs quality control office, the 26-year-old knew the risks of resisting bribes offered to public officials. But he also knew the risks of allowing spoiled food to be distributed to the most desperate.
'On that day, those mafiosi found themselves in front of a young man who, in the name of the Gospel, said 'No.' He opposed,' his friend Aline Manani said. 'And Floribèrt, I think that for me personally, I would say for all young people, is a role model.'

In the Philippines, AI fakes duel over VP Sara Duterte's impeachment
Days after the Philippine Senate declined to launch the impeachment trial of the country's vice-president, two interviews with Filipinos arguing for and against the move went viral. 'Why single out the VP?', a digitally created boy in a white school uniform asks, arguing that the case was politically motivated. The House of Representatives impeached Sara Duterte in early February on charges of corruption and an alleged assassination plot against former ally and running mate President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr Advertisement A guilty verdict in the Senate would result in her removal from office and a lifetime ban from Philippine politics.

Vietnamese tycoon Truong My Lan escapes death penalty, to serve life in jail
Vietnamese real estate tycoon Truong My Lan, who masterminded a US$12.5 billion banking fraud , has avoided the gallows after the government on Wednesday scrapped the death penalty for eight crimes, including embezzlement. Lan, the chairwoman of property giant the Van Thinh Phat Group, was sentenced to death last year on embezzlement and bribery charges. Her lawyer said the sentence 'will be converted to life imprisonment' after the National Assembly abolished capital punishment for eight offences, which included espionage, corruption, and an attempt to overthrow the government. Giang Hong Thanh added that Lan was 'very happy'. Lan was convicted last April of using multiple ghost companies to gain control of the Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB), plundering US$12.5 billion from the lender. But total damages caused by the fraud may have hit US$27 billion, according to prosecutors. In May, an appeal court ruled that Lan, 68, could escape the death penalty if she paid back three-quarters of the amount stolen.

Malaysian lawmaker Syed Saddiq cleared of corruption after ‘5 years of hell'
The Malaysian appeal court on Wednesday quashed the corruption conviction of former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, admonishing the lower court for not throwing out the allegations of embezzling funds earlier. Advertisement Syed Saddiq, a 33-year-old rising political star, was found guilty in 2023 of abetting a subordinate to withdraw 1 million ringgit (US$235,000) from his party Bersatu's youth wing account, and misappropriating another 120,000 ringgit to fund his 2018 election campaign. He was fined 10 million ringgit on top of a seven-year prison sentence but was out on bail pending the appeal. On Wednesday, a three-member panel in the Court of Appeal unanimously overturned the conviction, ruling that it was the result of 'serious misdirection' by the trial judge.
