New passenger reservation system by December 2025
In a significant move to improve train travel, Indian Railways is preparing to roll out major changes in how passengers book tickets. The updates include early chart preparation for waitlisted tickets, stricter verification for Tatkal bookings, and a complete overhaul of the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that the focus is on building a system that is "intelligent, clear, user-friendly and productive" to make train journeys smoother.Indian Railways is set to introduce a marginal hike in passenger fares starting July 1. For Mail and Express trains, the fare in non-AC classes will increase by 1 paise per kilometre, while AC class fares will go up by 2 paise per kilometre. The fare for second-class travel up to 500 km will remain unchanged. However, for journeys exceeding 500 km, the fare may rise by an additional half a paisa per kilometre.Currently, reservation charts are prepared four hours before a train departs. This often leaves waitlisted passengers with very little time to plan alternate travel. To fix this issue, Indian Railways will begin preparing charts eight hours ahead of departure. For trains leaving before 2 PM, the chart will be finalised by 9 PM the previous day. This change will help passengers from remote or suburban areas get clarity on their ticket status earlier and plan accordingly. From July 1, 2025, only verified users will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC platform. The Railways will also introduce OTP-based verification for Tatkal ticket bookings by the end of July.Users will need to verify their identity using Aadhaar or other valid documents saved in their DigiLocker accounts. This change is aimed at reducing misuse and ensuring genuine access for travellers.Earlier, it was announced that only Aadhaar-authenticated users could book Tatkal tickets. The rules have now been widened to accept other government documents via DigiLocker as well.A major upgrade of the passenger reservation system is currently underway. The Central Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is carrying out this upgrade, which is expected to be completed by December 2025.The new system will be able to handle ten times more bookings than the current one. It will support over 150,000 ticket reservations per minute, compared to the present 32,000. The number of enquiry requests it can process will rise from 400,000 per minute to over 4 million. The updated system will include a modern interface with multi-language support. It will also allow passengers to select seating preferences and check fare calendars. Special features will be available for Divyangjan, students, patients and other specific groups.

Bawankule warns against lapses in Koradi textile project
Nagpur: Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Wednesday issued a stern warning over irregularities in the Koradi textile unit established under the Maharashtra Women's Economic Development Corporation, stating that any negligence in the project's execution would not be tolerated. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The project aims to empower local women through self-help groups (SHGs) by providing employment opportunities in textile production. Bawankule chaired a review meeting at Vidhan Bhavan in the presence of women and child development minister Aditi Tatkare. He expressed dissatisfaction over the poor supply of machinery by an Ichalkaranji-based company. "Despite good progress in the initial phase, the project stalled due to substandard machines. FIRs should be filed against the company," Bawankule directed. He added that while the government is open to allocating additional funds if needed, it will not tolerate inefficiency going forward. Meanwhile, Tatkare announced a conditional 3-month extension for Social Buffet, the firm managing the project. "This is the last chance. Any further lapses will result in complete termination of their involvement," she warned. Officials were directed to ensure that the project is streamlined to deliver its intended benefits to SHG women. Bawankule emphasized that the unit must operate with transparency, accountability, and timely delivery of resources. The Koradi textile project is seen as a crucial step toward rural women's economic empowerment, and both ministers signaled the government's firm resolve to ensure its success.

Railways building AI-based integrated security centre, analytics platform
The Ministry of Railways' information technology (IT) backbone — the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) — has undertaken two major initiatives to secure the digital infrastructure of Indian Railways and streamline its information and operations systems. These include an integrated Security Operations Centre for Indian Railways (IRSOC) and an enterprise-wide analytics framework, CRIS said in a report marking its 40th Foundation Day. 'The implementation of IRSOC will significantly enhance the cybersecurity monitoring capabilities of Indian Railways, leading to a substantial reduction in Mean Time to Detect and Mean Time to Respond through the deployment of advanced security solutions such as Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Security Orchestration Automation and Response (SOAR), Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), and Network Detection and Response (NDR),' the report stated. The analytics framework will function by unifying data from various applications into a single Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML)-enabled decision support system. With a data-driven approach leveraging descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive, and cognitive analytics, CRIS aims to significantly improve operational efficiency, safety, asset management, and passenger services. Some of the areas where Indian Railways is looking to implement this decision support system include the growth of freight and passenger revenue, increasing market share, and improving profitability. It will also be used to enhance passenger safety and monitor asset performance and inventory levels. Moreover, the ministry has sought the guidance of Vinod Dham — popularly known as the 'Father of the Pentium Chip' — who has advised the Railways to incorporate modern technologies such as blockchain-based management of contracts and freight movement to ensure tamper-proof cargo tracking. He also recommended the adoption of data-driven, dynamic passenger and freight pricing models similar to those used in the aviation sector. Such models would incentivise off-peak travel, optimise seat utilisation, and enable customised freight pricing, Dham said.

Indian companies paid USD 481,636 on average for cyber attack demands: Report
New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): Indian companies paid a median payment of USD 481,636 (over Rs 4 crore), spending an average of USD 1.01 million on recovery, highlighting the broader financial toll of ransomware cyber attacks, says a report by UK-based global security solution firm Sophos. It stated that the median ransom demand fell by 52 per cent, from USD 2 million to USD 961,289, while the median payment dropped even more sharply by 79 per cent. The report said that about 41 per cent of Indian organisations paid less than the original demand, nearly half paid the full amount, and 12 per cent paid even more, underscoring the unpredictable outcomes many face during ransomware incidents. The report, whose findings are based on a survey, claimed that nearly 53 per cent of Indian companies paid the ransom to get their data back, which is a considerable drop from the 65 per cent reported last year. The sixth annual State of Ransomware 2025 report surveyed around 3,400 IT and cybersecurity leaders across 17 countries, including 378 organisations in India that were hit by ransomware in the last year. The report added that exploited vulnerabilities were the most common technical root cause of attack, used in 29 per cent of attacks. These are followed by compromised credentials, which were the start of 22 per cent of attacks. Malicious emails were used in 21 per cent of attacks, the report said. The report said that from an operational perspective, 41 per cent of organisations cited a lack of people or capacity and/or poor-quality protection as common root causes, while 39 per cent acknowledged that not having the necessary cybersecurity products or services played a factor in their organisation falling victim to ransomware. According to the survey, which was conducted between January and March this year, 31 per cent of Indian organisations reported data theft in attacks involving encrypted data, representing a modest decrease from 34 per cent the previous year. The report claimed USD 1 million or more was demanded in ransom for 49 per cent of Indian organisations, down from 62 per cent the previous year. (ANI)
