You may have the chance to feature in the 'Challengers' section of the third edition of the Chennai Grand Masters, India's biggest annual chess event in terms of rating. In a novel initiative, the organisers of the event have reserved two slots of the undercard to the winner and runner-up of the 'CGM Play-In', an online-only competition to be played on on July 12 and 13. "Titled players representing the India Chess Federation can compete in the Quantbox CGM Play-In for a chance to qualify for the Challengers section of the Chennai Grand Masters," informs the title page of the event on "The Play-In consists of a Swiss and a knockout phase." While the nine-round Swiss event will be held on Saturday night on the top seven players will advance to the knockouts, to be staged on the website a night later (the winner of the Swiss event will receive a first-round bye). There's also a money component for the online event; the winner is set to receive $280 (Rs 24,000), with the runner-up pocketing $210 (Rs 18,000). The bigger incentive, though, is the opportunity to play against the likes of R Vaishali, D Harika and Abhimanyu Puranik, all three of whom have signed up to feature in the Challengers section. The format for the online event is going to be 10+2, with single-elimination in the knockout phase. Titled players are players who are CMs, FMs, IMs, WGMs or even GMs. All-Indian field The 10-person Challengers field will only consist of Indian players. The field also includes the talented Leon Luke Mendonca, who also featured in the event in 2024. The big incentive is that the winner in the section will be invited to play in the elite Masters competition in 2026. For example, Pranav, who emerged winner in the Challengers section in 2024, has confirmed his participation in the Masters section this year. Rs 1 crore in prize money In all, the 20-player two-tier competition will have a total prize money of Rs 1cr. The person winning the Masters event will take home Rs 25 lakh. In the Challengers section, the winner be richer by Rs 7 lakh. Challengers D Harika, R Vaishali, Karthikeyan Murali, Abhimanyu Puranik, Aryan Chopra, Leon Luke Mendonca, Adhiban Baskaran (the announced field so far).

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's town development department has unveiled a draft policy for temporary structures for box cricket, pickleball, and other net-covered sports activities. Citizens have 30 days to submit objections before the new regulations are finalized and implemented. Key regulations include a mandatory plot size of over 500 sq m, with 50% reserved for parking. Operators must appoint a structural engineer and secure NOCs from fire, police, and airport authorities. Approval is limited to roads wider than 12m. Net heights can reach 12m, with specific requirements for road and side margins (6m and 3m respectively), and 3-m high boundary barricades. A licence fee of Rs 100 per sq m of the total plot area applies. Approvals are exclusively for non-agricultural land, requiring property card and revenue record proof. New applications and existing structures must comply within 30 days; late submissions incur a Rs 200 per square meter fee. Aryan Chauhan Wins Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series

In a major breakthrough for Indian E-sports, Aryan Chauhan, an engineering student from Ujjain, has won the Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series (BMPS) 2025, walking away with a whopping Rs 1.25 crore prize money. The Grand Finale, held at Delhi's Yashobhoomi Convention Centre on July 4-6, saw participation from India's top 16 BGMI teams. Aryan, along with three teammates from Devas, Surat, and Ranchi, formed 'Aryan X TMG Gaming', which clinched the top position in the fiercely contested tournament. The runner-up team NONX won Rs 55 lakh, while third-placed Los Hermanos took home rs35 lakh. Now, Aryan's team is set to represent India at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025, scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 8 to August 24. The tournament boasts a staggering global prize pool of $70.45 million (approximately Rs 605 crore) - one of the biggest ever in e-sports history. Speaking to NDTV, Aryan said, "Four rounds were held in Delhi. I had formed my team with players from different cities. Winning this means a lot. The prize money will be transferred within 90 days. My dream now is to perform well in Saudi Arabia on the global stage." Aryan, who is pursuing at Alpine College, credited his family, especially his mother, for supporting his passion for gaming from a young age. "When I used to play mobile games at home, my mother supported me. Today, I'm glad I could make her proud," Aryan said with a smile. His mother, Meenakshi Chauhan, admitted she was unsure initially about his gaming obsession. "At first, I wasn't happy seeing him play so much. But then I realized he was serious about it. That's when we decided not to stop him. Today, seeing him win such a big tournament, I'm truly proud." With the international stage now calling, Aryan and his teammates will carry India's hopes as they take on the world's best esports athletes in Saudi Arabia.
