Googles AI push pays off with solid second quarter, but doubts about companys future persist

Mint23-07-2025
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google's accelerating shift into artificial intelligence helped propel its corporate parent to another quarter of solid growth while a crackdown on its internet empire looms in the background.
The results released Wednesday for the April-June period provided the latest sign that Google is deftly navigating the technological landscape's tilt toward AI while still capitalizing on well-worn techniques that have made it the internet's main gateway for the past quarter century.
That balancing act helped Google parent Alphabet Inc. earn $28.2 billion, or $2.31 per share, during the second quarter, a 19% increase from the same time last year. Revenue climbed 14% from a year ago to $96.4 billion. Both figures easily eclipsed analysts' projections.
'We had a standout quarter, with robust growth across the company," Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said. 'We are leading at the frontier of AI and shipping at an incredible pace. AI is positively impacting every part of the business, driving strong momentum.'
The numbers were initially overshadowed by a disclosure that Alphabet is increasing this year's budget for capital expenditures by $10 billion to $85 billion as part of its effort to fend off intensifying competition from AI startups such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Perplexity. Besides those threats, a federal judge who declared Google's search engine to be an illegal monopoly is now weighing a range of countermeasures that include requiring the sale of its popular Chrome browser. Alphabet's shares dipped 1% in extended trading after the quarterly report came out.
After initially dipping following the disclosure about the rising costs of AI, Alphabet's stock price rebounded and rose by more than 1% in extended trading.
The performance covered a stretch that saw Google bring even more AI technology into its search engine in an effort to maintain its dominance, including the May release of its own version of a conversational answer engine called AI Mode.
That addition supplemented its more than year-old use of extensive summaries called AI Overviews that Google now frequently highlights at the top of its results page while decreasing the number of its traditional links to other websites.
The shake-up has resulted in even more interaction with Google's search engine and steady earnings growth to support Alphabet's $2.3 trillion market value, said Jim Yu, chief executive of BrightEdge, a firm that analyzes search trends.
Google's search-driven ad revenue totaled $54.2 billion in the past quarter, a 12% increase from the same time last year.
'All this AI stuff is not slowing Google down, they are doing a very good job of evolving with the times,' Yu said.
The AI boom has also been fueling demand in Google's Cloud division that sells computing power and other services. Google Cloud continued to thrive in the past quarter with revenue rising 32% from a year ago to $13.6 billion. The division is under pressure to deliver robust growth from investors to help justify Google's huge investments in AI technology.

Apple signals AI spending surge, open to big acquisitions: Tim Cook

Apple CEO Tim Cook signaled on Thursday the iPhone maker was ready to spend more to catch up to rivals in artificial intelligence by building more data centers or buying a larger player in the segment, a departure from a long practice of fiscal frugality. CEO Tim Cook says Apple ready to open its wallet to catch up in AI(Reuters) Apple has struggled to keep pace with rivals such as Microsoft and Alphabet's Google, both of which have attracted hundreds of millions of users to their AI-powered chatbots and assistants. That growth has come at a steep cost, however, with Google planning to spend $85 billion over the next year and Microsoft on track to spend more than $100 billion, mostly on data centers. Apple, in contrast, has leaned on outside data center providers to handle some of its cloud computing work, and despite a high-profile partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI for certain iPhone features, has tried to grow much of its AI technology in-house, including improvements to its Siri virtual assistant. The results have been rocky, with the company delaying its Siri improvements until next year. During a conference call after Apple's fiscal third-quarter results, analysts noted that Apple has historically not done large deals and asked whether it might take a different approach to pursue its AI ambitions. CEO Cook responded that the company had already acquired seven smaller companies this year and is open to buying larger ones. "We're very open to M&A that accelerates our roadmap. We are not stuck on a certain size company, although the ones that we have acquired thus far this year are small in nature," Cook said. "We basically ask ourselves whether a company can help us accelerate a roadmap, and if they do, then we're interested." Shares of the company were up 1.7% in premarket trading on Friday. Apple has tended to buy smaller firms with highly specialized technical teams to build out specific products. Its largest deal ever was its purchase of Beats Electronics for $3 billion in 2014, followed by a $1 billion deal to buy a modem chip business from Intel. But now Apple is at a unique crossroads for its business. The tens of billions of dollars per year it receives from Google as payment to be the default search engine on iPhones could be undone by U.S. courts in Google's antitrust trial, while startups like Perplexity are in discussions with handset makers to try to dislodge Google with an AI-powered browser that would handle many search functions. Apple executives have said in court they are considering reshaping the firm's Safari browser with AI-powered search functions, and Bloomberg News has reported that Apple executives have discussed buying Perplexity, which Reuters has not independently confirmed. Apple also said on Thursday it plans to spend more on data centers, an area where it typically spends only a few billion dollars per year. Apple is currently using its own chip designs to handle AI requests with privacy controls that are compatible with the privacy features on its devices. Kevan Parekh, Apple's chief financial officer, did not give specific spending targets but said outlays would rise. "It's not going to be exponential growth, but it is going to grow substantially," Parekh said during the conference call. 'A lot of that's a function of the investments we're making in AI.'

AP posts record Rs 3,803 crore GST collections in July 2025

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh recorded its highest-ever GST collections for the month of July 2025, with net collections at 2,930 crore and gross collections at 3,803 crore — marking a four-month streak of historic highs since April 2025. This performance surpasses all previous benchmarks since the introduction of the GST regime in 2017. "Net GST collections increased by 12.12% in July 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, reflecting continued improvements in compliance and tax administration. Robust performance in gross GST collections as collections also recorded a healthy growth of 14% in July 2025 over July 2024," said chief commissioner of taxes Ahmed Babu. He said that the growth rate of 14% among southern states and 3rd among all big states in the country. He explained that SGST collections reached ₹1,226 crore, marking an impressive 14.47% growth, reflecting improved consumption patterns and enhanced enforcement. The state received an IGST settlement of ₹1,704 crore in July 2025, reflecting a 10.69% year-on-year increase and emphasising effective monitoring and settlement mechanisms. The notable rise in net GST collections compared to July 2024 is due to improved tax compliance, streamlined IGST settlements, and a steadily growing tax base, said Babu. Petroleum tax revenue saw a steady rise over the past three months, indicating economic vibrancy and stronger compliance. Professional tax revenue spiked 51% in July alone, with a cumulative 55% growth up to July 2025. "The significant efforts by the state, such as strengthened enforcement, improved compliance measures, proactive analytics-based audits, and targeted interventions, have led to a notable rise in both gross and net GST collections in July 2025. These initiatives successfully reversed the negative trend seen in the first quarter (Q1) of the financial year," said chief commissioner of taxes. Between April and July 2025, AP achieved a total growth of 1.21%, reversing earlier declines and underscoring the success of strategic fiscal interventions.
