NBA Free Agency: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander signs monster record deal
Gilgeous-Alexander, who guided the Thunder to the NBA championship last month after a campaign that saw him win regular season and finals Most Valuable Player awards, is now tied to the club through 2031.
The 26-year-old Canadian point guard has two years remaining on his existing contract with Oklahoma City worth $79.1 million USD.
The four additional seasons of his contract extension will see him receive $62.5 million, $68.6 million, $73.7 million and then $78.7 million in 2030-2031.
The deal gives Gilgeous-Alexander the highest annual salary in the NBA, eclipsing the average $64.3 million salary of the Philadelphia 76ers' Joel Embiid and the $62.8 million earned by the Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum.
Gilgeous-Alexander was the fulcrum of the Thunder's dazzling 68-win Western Conference season, before inspiring the team to a 4-3 NBA Finals victory over the Indiana Pacers last month.
The Thunder ace averaged a league-high 32.7 points during the regular season and 30.3 points in the NBA Finals on his way to completing his MVP double.
He became only the fourth player in history to win both NBA regular season and finals MVP awards as well as the league's scoring title, putting him into an exclusive club alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal.
News of Gilgeous-Alexander's contract extension came as the NBA's free agency window cranked into top gear after the opening of the window on Monday.
In other significant early moves reported on Tuesday, the Milwaukee Bucks have waived all-star guard Damian Lillard after two seasons.
Lillard suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the opening round of the playoffs and faces a lengthy recovery that is expected to sideline him for most if not all of next season.
The Bucks meanwhile have moved to beef up their starting line-up with the acquisition of Indiana center Myles Turner, a key part of the Pacers run to last month's NBA Finals.
Turner has reportedly agreed to a four-year $107 million deal with the club which will see him form a formidable partnership alongside the Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to ESPN.
The Denver Nuggets meanwhile have brought in Jonas Valanciunas from the Sacramento Kings in trade for Dario Saric.rcw/ea

Elon Musk, an ex-ally of US President Donald Trump, said Saturday he had launched a new political party in the United States to challenge what the tech billionaire described as the country's "one-party system." Musk, the world's richest person and Trump's biggest political donor in the 2024 election, had a bitter falling out with the president after leading the Republican's effort to slash spending and cut federal jobs as head of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy," the Space X and Tesla boss posted on X, the social media platform that he owns. "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom." Musk cited a poll -- posted on X on Friday, US Independence Day -- in which he asked whether respondents "want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system" that has dominated US politics for some two centuries. The yes-or-no survey earned more than 1.2 million responses. "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!" he posted on Saturday. The Trump-Musk feud reignited in dramatic fashion late last month as Trump pushed Republicans in Congress to ram through his massive domestic agenda in the form of the One Big Beautiful Bill. Musk expressed fierce opposition to the legislation, and ruthlessly attacked its Republican backers for supporting "debt slavery." No nightspot in Wimbledon Village stays open later than Hemingways Bar. But with the 2am closing time rapidly approaching on Wednesday night, Nick Kyrgios wanted to kick on. The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up, a big basketball fan, knew NBA guard Jordan Clarkson – who was at the award-winning cocktail bar on Monday to celebrate his free agency commitment to the New York Knicks – was in London to watch the tennis. Kyrgios dialled Clarkson's number and told the ex-Utah Jazz sharpshooter to meet him outside Hemingways. Soon enough, an Uber rolled up, and they were off to party in east London. Welcome to just another night in the usually 'sleepy' Wimbledon Village, which springs to life with tourists and sports stars during the Wimbledon tennis fortnight. There is nothing like it at any of the other three grand slams. The village is located at the top of the hill near Wimbledon Common and a natural extension of the grasscourt major, with a traditional English vibe and lively dining and bar scene, including the famous Dog and Fox hotel (of which Kyrgios is a regular). There is also an annual competition where village businesses go head-to-head to design the best and most creative tennis-themed window decoration, with centre court tickets to semi-finals day up for grabs.
