Trigon Pacific Terminals Greenlights $750 Million LPG Export Facility in Prince Rupert, Bolstering Canada's Energy Export Capacity

Yahoo11-06-2025
PRINCE RUPERT, BC, June 11, 2025 /CNW/ - Trigon Pacific Terminals (Trigon), a leading bulk commodity export terminal, today announced its Final Investment Decision (FID) for a new open-access 2.5 million MTPA LPG export facility in Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
Subject to securing all necessary legal and regulatory approvals, the $750M facility is projected to start exports in late 2029, significantly enhancing Canada's objective to be a competitive energy superpower as well its as capacity to serve global energy markets.
"This FID is a pivotal moment for Trigon and for Canada's energy sector, creating new pathways for Canadian LPG to reach international markets, and driving economic growth, resiliency and opportunity for Canadians," said Rob Booker, CEO of Trigon. "We've come to the table with investment dollars and now we need the federal government to expedite this shovel-ready project that is clearly in the national interest."
This decision comes with support to advance to this project development stage from the Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla First Nations, underscoring Trigon's commitment to collaborative development and shared prosperity.
"This is about bringing long-term benefits to our people, our land, and future generations, and is the next chapter of development in Prince Rupert. It reflects what's possible when communities and Nations are true partners who are meaningfully involved from the beginning," said Garry Reece, Chief Councillor, Lax Kw'alaams Band.
"The shared prosperity model that Trigon has adopted ensures our communities have a strong voice, a stake and a future in major projects within our territory. We know Trigon will continue to engage with our community and others to ensure this project aligns with the interests and priorities of the Indigenous People within our region," said Chief Robert Nelson, Metlakatla First Nation.
The facility also has the backing of the Alberta government, recognizing its strategic importance for Canadian energy producers.
"This is great news for Canada and Alberta. We have some of the largest reserves of natural gas and natural gas liquids in the world and are working hard to meet the growing demand of our partners in Japan, Korea and Asia. This new Indigenous-backed facility will play a major role in the long-term success of these partnerships and in promoting indigenous economic reconciliation," stated Brian Jean, Alberta Minister of Energy and Minerals.
The project also meets the federal government's recently identified criteria for projects of national interest, which include: strengthen Canada's autonomy, resilience and security; provide economic or other benefits to Canada; have a high likelihood of successful execution; advance the interests of Indigenous Peoples; and contribute to clean growth and to Canada's objectives with respect to climate change.
The new infrastructure addresses a pressing need for Canadian energy producers who have faced significant challenges accessing export markets due to capacity constraints at existing Prince Rupert facilities, and broader impediments arising from the current western Canadian export monopoly.
Trigon's open-access model will provide much-needed competition and flexibility, as an expansion of Canada's export capabilities rather than a reallocation of existing capacity.
Strong international demand for Canadian LPG has been confirmed through robust off-take discussions with key partners in Japan, South Korea, and India, demonstrating the global appetite for reliable energy supplies from Canada.
"Canada and Japan are important partners in the Pacific region, cooperating in a wide range of economic fields, including energy. Japan has been increasing LPG import from Canada, achieving stable import volume of two million tonnes in 2024. We welcome the expansion of competitive LPG exports from Canada, contributing to the stable energy supply for Japan," added Yamamoto, Executive Officer, General Manager, Trading and Shipping Department, Astomos Energy Corporation:
"With FID in place, Trigon will continue its ongoing engagement and dialogue with Indigenous communities and the broader public as part of Trigon's commitment to meeting its consultation obligations and working to advance meaningful economic participation, engagement and reconciliation," added Booker.
Trigon's Board of Directors has given its full approval to proceed, with critical infrastructure already in advanced stages of readiness. Rail access to the site is prepared, and berth loading facilities are ready for integration. Long-lead items necessary for the terminal's construction have been identified for procurement, ensuring a streamlined development timeline.
Trigon Pacific Terminals Limited is a multi-commodity bulk export terminal at the Port of Prince Rupert. With a skilled workforce and proven operational excellence, it is a key link between Western Canadian commodity producers and their Asia-Pacific customers. Privately owned – with equity positions held by the Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla – Trigon is committed to transformational growth strategies aligned with global energy and climate-related imperatives.

OCEU/CUPE 1750 Calls Out WSIB and Ford Government for Outsourcing to U.S. Company, Laying Off Ontario Workers

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Ontario Compensation Employees Union (OCEU/CUPE 1750) is calling out the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and the Ford government after confirmation that 26 document management jobs will be eliminated and handed to Iron Mountain, a private company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts The workers provide essential support to Ontario's workplace safety system. The layoffs notices will take effect July 16, just one week after members returned to work following a legal strike. 'This government says it wants to protect Ontario jobs, but when it mattered, they sided with a U.S. multinational corporation over public service workers,' said Harry Goslin, president of OCEU/CUPE 1750. 'I spoke directly with Minister Piccini and urged him to intervene. Instead, he defended the outsourcing. That's unacceptable.' Although Iron Mountain highlights its Canadian operations, it is a U.S.-based multinational corporation. Its Canadian division is a wholly owned subsidiary, not a public agency accountable to Ontarians. The WSIB's decision to contract out unionized public sector work to a private company sets a troubling precedent that puts corporate profit ahead of public service. 'This is how the WSIB responds after a difficult and historic strike — by cutting some of the lowest-paid workers with no explanation of how it will help injured Ontarians,' said Goslin. 'The WSIB is acting like a private insurance company, focused only on cost-cutting, when it was meant to be more than that.' OCEU/CUPE 1750 has consistently signalled a willingness to work with WSIB leadership to avoid cuts. Despite this, and despite options for in-house solutions, the agency — with the Ford government's support — is threatening its first major layoffs in recent memory. 'Our members just walked back through the doors, and now they're being targeted again,' said Goslin. 'We are ready to work on real solutions. But if the WSIB goes through with this plan, we will fight to defend every one of these jobs.' OCEU/CUPE 1750 remains committed to protecting public service workers, defending good jobs, and holding public agencies — and the governments behind them — accountable for decisions that hurt Ontario communities. :am/COPE491

Las Vegas Sands resort in Singapore aims to 'redefine' luxury

When finished, the vast 55-story Las Vegas Sands property in Singapore will hold 570 luxury hotel suites, a casino, shopping, spa and wellness stops, 20,000 feet of meeting and convention space and a 15,000-seat entertainment arena, along with restaurants with incredible views. Image courtesy of Safdie Architects and Marina Bay Sands July 15 (UPI) -- An $8 billion ultra-luxury Las Vegas Sands property in Singapore has its owners saying the soon-to-be constructed resort will "redefine industry standards" and expand the regional footprint of the small island nation. On Tuesday, officials broke ground on the future luxury entertainment destination with both Singapore government and Las Vegas Sands representatives present to witness. "This is going to be the most luxurious and high-serviced hotel in the world," company President and COO Patrick Dumont told The Straits Times on Monday ahead of the ceremony. It's slated for completion by 2030 and officials hope to open by 2031. More than 200 guests attended Tuesday's groundbreaking, including Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and company co-founder Miriam Adelson. Native artist Jasmine Sokko and Canadian singer-songwriter Henry Lau entertained guests. The vast 55-story complex will hold 570 luxury hotel suites, a casino, shopping, spa and wellness stops, 20,000 feet of meeting and convention space and a 15,000-seat entertainment arena. The state-of-the-art arena is designed by Populous, the same global firm that curated the Sphere in Las Vegas and London's O2 Arena in Britain. Dumont added that Singapore was an "incredibly desirable" location to Las Vegas Sands, which is the parent company of Marina Bay Sands. According to the company, the new resort will "push boundaries." "We have every intention of delivering a product that will be the envy of the hospitality industry and ushers in a new era of luxury tourism in Singapore," Robert Goldstein, chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands, said Tuesday. The design is being lead by Moshe Safdie of Safdie Architects, the same firm behind the design of the Marina Bay Sands properties. Arctic Gateway Group Makes Significant Infrastructure Upgrades

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, July 15, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Arctic Gateway Group (AGG) is currently undertaking major infrastructure improvements at the Port of Churchill and along the Hudson Bay Railway. With expanded freight operations, new construction at the Port of Churchill, and upcoming port modernization projects, AGG is investing in long-term strength for Canada's Arctic trade corridor. 'The Port of Churchill is primed to become a major Canadian trade asset,' said Chris Avery, CEO, Arctic Gateway Group. 'The investments we are making are setting the stage for a new era of growth and Northern economic activity, unlocking the trade and transportation potential of Canada's Arctic Trade Corridor to better serve the Canadian national interest.' Expanded Freight Operations Now in Effect A second weekly wayfreight train is now operating along the Hudson Bay Railway, following successful efforts to train and hire new conductors for the Northern workforce. This expansion has also been made possible by years of investment in railway rehabilitation and new technologies that keep the railway strong and safe. The Hudson Bay Railway is now in its best condition in more than 30 years. 'This marks a new level of service and reliability along the line,' said Avery. 'We've reached this point by investing in the people and technologies needed to operate safely and reliably in Canada's North.' AGG's investments in hiring and training local conductors and railway staff have deepened the company's workforce capacity, while partnerships with Canadian firms such as TrackSense by DecisionWorks and Aposys have brought new technologies into the field. These include ground-penetrating radar, LiDAR, drone inspections, GPS-tracked maintenance, land-based sensors, and artificial intelligence for data monitoring. New Critical Mineral Storage at the Port of Churchill Construction is now complete on a new critical mineral storage facility at the Port of Churchill. Once operational, it will triple the port's storage capacity for critical minerals, meeting growing demand from the Canadian mining sector and positioning Churchill as a key hub for resource exports. This facility can also support the storage needs of other commodities, such as certain types of potash. 'Manitoba, Nunavut and Western Canada hold vast amounts of critical minerals,' said Avery. 'With more storage capabilities at the Port of Churchill we can better meet the needs of Canadian critical mineral producers looking for new, reliable trade routes.' Port Modernization and Wharf Refacing In the coming months, major modernization work will begin at the Port of Churchill. Work this year includes the refacing of the wharf, ensuring long-term safety and operability as shipping traffic grows. These upgrades will enhance the Port's ability to handle bulk cargo efficiently and safely, and sets the Port up to further diversify export and import commodities. First Arctic Supply Ship The first Arctic supply ship of the 2025 season arrived at the Port of Churchill over the weekend, loading construction equipment, essential goods, and building materials to be exported to the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. AGG has a long-standing relationship with Kivalliq communities, with partnerships in place for expanded growth. 'We're focused on building a resilient transportation corridor that people in the Canadian North can rely on, one that also serves the trade, transportation, and security needs of a changing Arctic,' said Avery. About Arctic Gateway Group The Arctic Gateway Group is a proudly Indigenous- and community-owned Manitoba company that owns and operates the Port of Churchill, Canada's only Arctic seaport serviced by rail, as well as the Hudson Bay Railway, operating from The Pas to Churchill. Together this northern infrastructure forms the nexus of Canada's Arctic Trade Corridor, providing a reliable and efficient route for Canadian resources to access world markets.
