Indonesia seizes record two tonnes of crystal meth hidden in fishing boat
The National Narcotics Agency, or BNN, said Thai authorities had notified them that the Indonesian-flagged vessel, sailing from the Andaman Sea to Batam Island, could be carrying a huge haul of narcotics.
Indonesian authorities intercepted the boat in waters off the Riau islands last Tuesday, and found 2,000 packages of crystal meth stuffed into cardboard boxes hidden within the ship.
"The result of the search is two tonnes of crystal methamphetamine," BNN chief Marthinus Hukom told a press conference. "This is the biggest haul in Indonesia's narcotics bust history."
Marthinus estimated the drugs to be worth nearly $308,000,000.
Indonesian authorities investigated the case over the last five months, working closely with Thai authorities.
The illicit drugs were produced in the "Golden Triangle" region where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, and were smuggled by an organised crime group working with Indonesian traffickers, Marthinus said.
Six people onboard the fishing boat were arrested, including four Indonesians and two Thai nationals.
The crew told authorities they were fishermen recruited by the drugs syndicate which promised to pay them 50,000 Thai Baht ($1,500) and a $3,000 bonus.
Marthinus said a fugitive from Thailand was behind the operation and that Indonesia would issue a red notice for the trafficker.
Monday's drug bust was the second major drug seizure this month. Indonesian authorities previously seized 1.2 tonnes of crystal meth and more than 700 kilograms of cocaine inside a Thailand-flagged fishing boat near the Riau islands.
Indonesia has some of the world's toughest anti-drug laws, including capital punishment for some trafficking cases. - AFP

Thailand Declares Martial Law In Eastern Border Provinces Amid Rising Tensions
BANGKOK, July 25 (Bernama) -- The Chanthaburi-Trat Border Defence Command on Friday declared martial law in several districts of eastern Thailand, effective immediately, following a second day of escalating Thai-Cambodian border tensions that have reportedly left at least 15 people dead. Deputy Spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy, Rear Admiral Paratch Rattanachaipan, clarified that the imposition of martial law in parts of Chanthaburi and Trat provinces is intended to grant the military full legal authority to maintain peace and order, while assuring the public that daily life may continue as usual. bootstrap slideshow He stated that the growing tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border have raised concerns for the safety and security of residents in the affected regions. 'In response, the Chanthaburi-Trat Border Protection Command has exercised its authority under the Martial Law Act of 1914 to extend martial law to specific inland districts in both Chanthaburi and Trat,' he said in a statement issued on Friday. 'This measure enables military personnel to legally maintain order and effectively carry out critical tasks, such as designating safe zones for civilians.' He added that the decision was made by the Commander of the Border Protection Command for Chanthaburi and Trat, following ongoing developments in the area. He emphasised that residents in the affected districts can continue their daily activities as normal, as has been the case in other areas where martial law has previously been enforced. Martial law is the temporary imposition of military rule over a civilian population, typically in times of extreme emergency, war, or severe civil unrest, when the civilian authorities are deemed unable to maintain public order and safety.

Indonesia court convicts aide of former president Megawati in blow to opposition
JAKARTA: An Indonesian court convicted a senior aide to former President Megawati Soekarnoputri in a corruption case, dealing a blow to the leadership of the nation's main opposition party. The Central Jakarta District Court on Friday (July 25) found Hasto Kristiyanto (pic), secretary general of Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), guilty of bribing a former election commission official in 2019 to facilitate the replacement of a member of parliament. Hasto was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and fined 250 million rupiah (US$15,319). The court acquitted him of a separate charge of obstructing a corruption investigation into a fugitive linked to the party. Both parties have seven days to appeal the verdict. Prosecutors had sought a seven-year sentence. The case has revived longstanding concerns about judicial independence in the South-East Asian democracy, particularly as other opposition-linked figures come under legal scrutiny. Last week, a vocal government critic and former trade minister was convicted in a graft case related to sugar imports. Hasto has consistently denied wrongdoing. He said Friday that his verdict was similar to what the former minister had experienced, "where the law becomes a tool of power.' Prosecutors previously have denied any ulterior motive in the case. The ruling represents a setback for PDI-P, the largest party in parliament and the sole major party outside the ruling coalition of President Prabowo Subianto. The imprisonment of a senior official could diminish the party's parliamentary influence, and prompt internal debates over whether to continue its relatively non-adversarial stance or emerge as a stronger opposition force. Political analysts have long perceived the charges against Hasto as politically driven, in part because they stemmed from events dating back years and because of the timing of a falling-out with former President Joko Widodo. The case originated late last year after PDI-P formally ended its alliance with Widodo for endorsing Prabowo rather than the party's own candidate in Indonesia's presidential election. In court, Hasto had claimed he was threatened with arrest if his party went ahead with expelling Widodo. The former president has denied any involvement in the alleged threat, telling reporters in March that there would be no point in threatening someone not to expel him. "What would I gain? What would I lose?' he said according to local media outlet Detik News. The verdict comes a week after Thomas Trikasih Lembong, the former trade minister and a vocal critic of both Widodo and Prabowo in recent years, was found guilty in a case related to sugar imports a decade ago.
