Zambia launches portable digital x-rays guidelines

The Star2 days ago
LUSAKA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Zambia on Tuesday launched national operational guidelines for the use of portable digital X-ray units to enhance diagnostic services across the country.
Kennedy Lishimpi, permanent secretary for technical services at the Ministry of Health, said the lack of standardized national guidelines has led to inconsistencies in usage, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance.
"These guidelines will ensure that the use of portable x-ray technology aligns with national policy, global best practices, and safety standards, while enhancing efficiency across health facilities," Lishimpi said at the launch.
He noted that with the increasing demand for flexible and rapid diagnostic imaging solutions, portable digital X-ray units have become a game-changer, particularly in the management of tuberculosis, trauma, and other critical conditions.
According to Lishimpi, the introduction of the new guidelines will facilitate the broader use of portable digital X-ray units, promoting more equitable access to diagnostic services throughout the country.
He called for the full implementation and integration of the guidelines into national health systems to ensure all Zambians can benefit.
The government, he emphasized, remains committed to improving access to quality diagnostic services at all levels of care, especially in hard-to-reach and underserved communities.

Africa CDC warns of widespread drug resistance across Africa

ADDIS ABABA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has warned of widespread drug resistance on the continent, threatening to reverse decades of health and development gains. The Africa CDC, in its latest study titled "Mapping Antimicrobial Resistance and Antimicrobial Use Partnership," released Wednesday, said the "alarming rate" of antimicrobial resistance across 14 African countries poses an urgent continental public health threat. The study, the largest of its kind conducted in Africa, analyzed more than 187,000 test results from 205 laboratories between 2016 and 2019 in 14 countries, including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, and Nigeria, revealing a growing ineffectiveness of antibiotics against common bacterial infections. Drug resistance occurs when bacteria change in ways that make antibiotics used to treat infections less effective. The phenomenon results in common infections becoming harder to treat, more expensive to manage, and more likely to spread, according to the study. It highlighted drug resistance as a growing epidemic affecting multiple countries across the continent. One of the "most concerning" findings is that resistance to a powerful group of antibiotics, known as third-generation cephalosporins, is exceptionally high in Ghana and Malawi. The study also revealed demographic disparities in drug-resistant infections, with older adults and hospitalized patients being particularly vulnerable. It said the existing demographic disparities underscore the need for targeted interventions to protect at-risk populations. The Africa CDC also highlighted "serious gaps" in laboratory infrastructure and data collection systems. Findings reveal that fewer than 2 percent of health facilities were equipped to test for bacterial infections, and only 12 percent of drug resistance records were linked to patient information.

MOH Conducting Maldistribution Studies On Permanent Placement Of Medical Officers

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Health (MOH) is conducting maldistribution studies to scrutinise the placement of medical officers at health facilities nationwide, said its Deputy Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni. For example, he said the MOH had offered 650 permanent positions in Sabah and Sarawak, but nearly 600 medical officers submitted appeal letters to be released from their postings in both states. "Only seven medical officers clicked on the permanent positions.. So, how can we help and uphold the rights of the people of Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan? Should we place all medical officers in the Klang Valley or urban areas only? "We must consider the human rights of all Malaysians appropriately. Nonetheless, we are working on ways to increase the number of permanent positions for deserving medical officers,' he said. He said this when winding up the debate on the motion for the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) 2023 Annual Report and Financial Statement at the Dewan Rakyat here today. Meanwhile, Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad said the Gig Workers Bill 2025, scheduled to be tabled during this sitting, specifically emphasises four main components - the definition of gig workers, income, dispute resolution mechanism and social security. He said the bill introduces a structured dispute resolution mechanism as an official channel for gig workers to present any issues or unfairness regarding their services, thus allowing the complaints to be addressed systematically. "The dispute resolution process can be done through several stages, namely through internal mechanisms, conciliation proceedings, and, if unresolved, it can be brought before the gig worker tribunal,' he said when winding up the debate on the report for the ministry. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, meanwhile, said the ministry is ready to study the feasibility of regulating e-hailing fares based on the findings and recommendations of the Klang Valley Land Public Transport Strategic Plan (PSPALK), which is expected to be finalised at the end of this year.

Cabinet memorandum ready to tackle healthcare staffing shortages

PAPAR: The Ministry of Health (MOH) has finalised briefing notes and a memorandum for Cabinet review to tackle the critical shortage of healthcare personnel nationwide, according to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. He stated that the ministry is prioritising the filling of 4,352 vacancies to meet public healthcare demands, as highlighted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier today. 'We recognise the severity of the staffing deficit and are taking immediate action. I am personally committed to fast-tracking the conversion of contract staff to permanent roles without cohort-based delays,' Dzulkefly told reporters after attending the Community Engagement Day event at the National Information Dissemination Centre in Kampung Langkuas, Kinarut. The minister acknowledged the long-standing issue of uneven staff distribution and pledged to address it systematically. 'This inherited challenge requires urgent resolution, and we are exploring solutions to bridge the gap efficiently,' he added. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Ministry of Communications Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, and MOH Secretary-General Datuk Seri Suriani Ahmad were also present at the event. Prime Minister Anwar earlier announced accelerated hiring for 4,352 healthcare roles, including contract doctors, to meet pressing sector needs. However, Dzulkefly clarified that while MOH advocates for these appointments, the final authority rests with the Public Service Department (JPA) and Public Services Commission (SPA). Additionally, the MOH is reinforcing staff morale by retaining the 42-hour work week for nurses, housemen, and medical officers. – Bernama
