'Trailblazer' and former England fast bowler Lawrence dies at 61
Lawrence, the first British-born Black cricketer to represent England, was diagnosed last year with MND, a degenerative condition that causes muscle wastage and affects the brain and nerves.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE (King's Birthday Honours) following his brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease," Lawrence's family said.
"Syd was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field... A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd took on every challenge with everything he could and his final contest with MND was no different.
"His willingness to encourage and think of others right up to the end was typical of the man he was. As President of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Syd took on the role with incredible pride and passion and loved every minute of it."
Lawrence, who earned five test caps for England, made 280 appearances for Gloucestershire and took 625 wickets for the county.
His test debut came at Lord's against Sri Lanka in 1988, with his career highlight being a five-wicket haul against the West Indies at the Oval in 1991.
In 2022, Lawrence became Gloucestershire County Cricket Club's first Black president and he was named one of the inaugural Honorary Life Vice-Presidents of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) earlier this year.
ECB chairman Richard Thompson described Lawrence as "a true trailblazer of English cricket and a man of immense courage, character, and compassion".
"His impact on the game extended far beyond the boundary ropes," Thompson added in a statement. "As a fast bowler, he thrilled crowds with his pace and passion. As a leader and advocate, he broke barriers and inspired change, becoming a powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport."

Mimi Rhodes makes unusual hole-in-one at Women's Open
England's Mimi Rhodes found an unusual way to score low on a tough day by sinking a remarkable hole-in-one in her final round at the AIG Women's Open. High winds made for difficult conditions at Royal Porthcawl on Sunday but, with a fortuitous ricochet off her playing partner's ball, Rhodes aced the par-three fifth. Rhodes, who began six shots off the overnight lead of nine under held by Miyu Yamashita, had the benefit of following Stephanie Kyriacou off the tee. The Australian went close to a hole-in-one herself with a shot that hit the green and came to rest inches from the cup. Rhodes then played a very similar shot and, luckily for her, Kyriacou's ball was handily placed for it to deflect in off. Kyriacou was still able to hole her short putt for a deserved birdie. Meanwhile, Yamashita birdied the fourth to open up a three-shot lead as nearest challenger Kim A-lim dropped back to seven under following back-to-back bogeys. Rhodes' compatriot Charley Hull then cut the gap to two with consecutive birdies at the fifth and sixth.

Mimi Rhodes scores amazing hole-in-one as ball goes in-off snooker style at Women's Open
The final round of the Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl has delivered one of the most extraordinary moments in modern major history after the English golfer Mimi Rhodes produced a hole-in-one which bore remarkable resemblance to an in-off snooker shot. Australia's Steph Kyriacou had already hit her shot to within inches of the hole at the 212-yard 5th when Rhodes stepped on to the tee. The 23-year-old's iron shot bounced from the front of the green towards the hole. The ball duly kissed off that of Kyriacou and into the bottom of the cup for an ace. 'Did that go in?!' a stunned Rhodes asked. The episode was even more remarkable because Kyriacou had already made a hole-in-one at Porthcawl, at the 8th during round two. This was Rhodes's second ace of the season. It is unclear what she will give Kyriacou as a thanks for the assist. The incredible moment conjured memories of Louis Oosthuizen and the 2016 Masters, where the South African made a hole-in-one at the 16th in similar style. Oosthuizen's ball was diverted towards the hole via that of JB Holmes.
