Piping Plovers spotted at Montrose Beach
Two Piping Plovers were spotted at Montrose Beach Friday afternoon.
Chicago Piping Plovers confirmed one of the birds is Pippin, while the birding community believes the other is Uncle Larry out of Michigan.
The Plovers annual arrival comes earlier than years past. They may be sticking around for summer or just stopping over en route to their usual breeding territory.
The Piping Plover vanished from Chicago and Cook County in 1948. Nearly extinct from the region, the bird was declared federally endangered in the 1980s.

In 2019, a pair of Piping Plovers began nesting at Montrose Beach. Dubbed Monty and Rose, the pair returned in 2020 and in 2021. Both passed away in 2022. Their native-born son, Imani, mated with a captive-reared Plover, Searocket, and had four chicks. Three of them passed away within a couple of weeks.
WGN-TV is still waiting on word of sightings of Monty and Rose's son Imani and grandchild Nagamo.
Great Lakes Piping Plovers are an endangered species and are federally protected by the Endangered Species Act.
Chicago Piping Plovers is a joint collaboration between the Chicago Bird Alliance, the Chicago Ornithological Society and the Illinois Ornithological Society.

Woman Allows Jobless Sister to Move in, Then Gets Mad When Roommate Wants to Split Rent 3 Ways
A Reddit user grew frustrated with their roommate after she allowed her sister to "basically move in'NEED TO KNOW A Reddit user expressed their frustration with their roommate, who allowed her sister to "basically move" into their small apartment The user explained that the sister was supposed to leave after a few days, but after "what feels like forever," she was still in the apartment Growing frustrated, the poster decided to split the rent three waysA Reddit user turned to the platform for support after getting into a disagreement with their roommate over rent. In the post, the user explained that they recently 'traveled for a family get-together' and, following their return, they 'found someone else in the apartment," who turned out to be their roommate Rose's younger sister. 'I asked her what was going on, and she casually said, 'Oh, she just came from the village and will be staying here for a few days while she applies for a job,'' the user writes. 'I asked her why she didn't let me know beforehand, and she said, 'I thought you wouldn't mind.' ' However, 'those 'few days' turned into what feels like forever," the poster writes, noting that the sister 'basically moved in." "Her sister is always home doing absolutely nothing. No job hunting, no house chores, just using up our space, electricity, water, and food," they explain. Once rent was due, the poster "divided it into three," rather than their usual 50/50 agreement, so that the sister could pay her share. However, after getting the payment, Rose immediately called the poster, saying they "didn't send [her] the full rent." "I told her to divide the total into three, and that is my part," the poster recalls. 'She flipped. Said her sister isn't working yet and I've been working for years, so I should be able to afford the full half. That I should 'overlook it' and 'render a little help,' ' The post continued, 'I told her point blank: You didn't ask me before bringing your sister in, and now you expect me to pay her rent too? Absolutely not. She called me wicked and stormed off.' Despite tensions in the household, Reddit users applauded the poster for standing their ground. 'Tell landlord about the sister moving in without your approval. They'll kick her out,' one user wrote. Another added, 'She invited her to stay there without your permission so she volunteers to pay any increase in bills because of that.' Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword

Watch: Dog lost in Alaskan wilderness found by pilot nine days later
July 16 (UPI) -- A dog who went missing during a camping trip in Alaska was found over a week later by a pilot who decided to go searching in his small plane. Soldotna residents Lewis and Amber Ekle said they were camping near Carmen Lake over the Fourth of July weekend when their dog, Koda, became spooked and ran off. "We tried to grab his collar," Lewis Ekle told KTUU-TV. "He grabbed his frisbee ... and said, 'No, I'm out.'" The couple spent nine days searching for Koda on foot and by boat, but they couldn't find any sign of the canine. They posted about the missing dog in several different Facebook groups, getting the attention of multiple volunteer searchers, including pilot John Kagerer. "I just had a real feeling. I don't know, a gut feeling that I was going to find the dog," Kagerer said. The pilot landed his plane about a half mile from where Koda disappeared, and the dog appeared within minutes. "Here comes the dog out of the alders over to me, you know. But it wouldn't get any closer than about 10 feet to me," Kagerer said. He used some dog treats he kept in his plane to lure Koda to come close enough that he could secure him with a rope and load him into the plane for a flight back to Anchorage for a reunion with his owners. "That sucker punch in our stomachs for nine days and afterwards it was just like this huge weight lifted off your shoulder. It's just amazing to have him back home," Amber Eckle said.

England's oldest WWII veteran, Donald Rose, dead at 110
Britain's oldest World War II veteran, Donald Rose, has died at the age of 110. Rose participated in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, and was part of the division that liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northern Germany. In a statement Friday, the leader of the Erewash Borough Council in the north of England, James Dawson, announced Rose's death, calling him a 'war hero.' 3 Britain's oldest World War II veteran, Donald Rose, passed away at the age of 110. AP 3 Rose was part of the division that liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northern Germany. AP 'Erewash was privileged to count him as a resident,' he added. In May, Rose joined 45 other veterans as guests of honor at a tea party celebration hosted by the Royal British Legion at the National Memorial Arboretum, to mark 80 years since Victory in Europe Day. Rose, who was born on Christmas Eve in 1914 following the outbreak of hostilities in World War I, said at the event that he did not celebrate VE Day at the time. 'When I heard that the armistice had been signed 80 years ago, I was in Germany at Belsen and, like most active soldiers, I didn't get to celebrate at that time,' he said. 'We just did what we thought was right and it was a relief when it was over.' 3 Wounded British troops from the South Lancashire and Middlesex regiments are being helped ashore at Sword Beach, June 6, 1944, during the D-Day invasion. AP Originally from the village of Westcott, southwest of London, Rose joined the army aged 23 and served in North Africa, Italy and France, according to the Royal British Legion. He received a number of medals and was awarded France's highest honor, the Legion d'Honneur. Rose is also believed to have been the U.K.'s oldest man.
