The finance ministry on Friday said tax benefits as available under the National Pension System , or NPS, shall also be applicable in the Unified Pension Scheme , or UPS - a new pension framework introduced for central government employees from April 1, 2025."In a bid to provide further impetus to the UPS, the government has decided that tax benefits as available under NPS shall apply mutatis mutandis to UPS as it is an option under NPS," the ministry said in a statement.These provisions ensure parity with the existing NPS structure and provide substantial tax relief and incentives to employees opting for UPS. The key benefits under NPS include annual deduction of up to ₹2 lakh for own contributions. The tax benefits on employer contribution include tax deduction up to 10% of salary (Basic + DA) (14% if such contribution is made by the central government) contributed by employer under Section 80 CCD(2) over the limit of ₹1.50 lakh provided under section 80 CCE.

However, frequent challenges such as SMS delivery failures and biometric mismatches at the UIDAI end were causing inconvenience to the beneficiaries, Gokul Butail, Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister, said in a the launch of the FaceAuth mechanism, the process has now been streamlined and made more accessible, Butail noted, adding that, unlike traditional methods, this new facility uses a mobile camera via an app installed on the fair price shop (FPS) owner's smartphone, enabling direct facial authentication of beneficiaries."In a significant technological advancement, the department of Digital Technologies and Governance (DDTG), Himachal Pradesh, has introduced Aadhaar-based face authentication (FaceAuth) for the distribution of ration to eligible beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS)," Butail emphasised that this pioneering initiative underscores the state's commitment to leveraging digital technology for enhancing public service delivery and promoting inclusive access to essential new system is expected to improve the authentication success rate and reduce verification time, ensuring a faster and more efficient ration distribution process, the statement added.

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel From deep urban shafts to mountain tunnels and marine crossings, the Bullet Train project is progressing fast, with 80 per cent of excavation work completed at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station in Mumbai, an official release said on the 21-km-long underground and undersea tunnel between BKC and Shilphata in Thane district, 16 km is being excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines and 5 km with the help of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, said the National High-Speed Rail Corporation of India Limited ( NHSRCL ) in the NHSRCL, which is implementing the 508-km rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, said that base slab casting has already commenced at both ends of the BKC station site, at a depth of 100 feet below ground 80 per cent of the excavation work at the station has been completed, it slab casting has been completed at Vikhroli (56 metres deep) and Sawli shaft (39 metres deep). These shafts are essential for launching tunnel boring machines and facilitating underground work, the release on the Thane, Virar, and Boisar elevated stations in Maharashtra is progressing at an accelerated pace, it said, adding that pier work is being executed at multiple locations, with approximately 44 kilometres of piers cast so the Palghar district, excavation of seven mountain tunnels is underway, and construction has commenced on bridges across Vaitarna, Ulhas, and Jagani rivers, NHSRCL total cost of the project is pegged at Rs 1.08 lakh crore, and as per the shareholding pattern, the Government of India is to pay Rs 10,000 crore to the NHSRCL, while the two states involved, Gujarat and Maharashtra, are to pay Rs 5,000 crore rest is to be paid by Japan through a loan at 0.1 per cent interest.
