
Father's Day grief: Have opt-out emails become a marketing tool?
I joined the "Dead Dad Club" in 2020, when I lost my father to vascular dementia. The first few years were hard.So when UK florist Bloom & Wild became the first brand to offer an option to stop emails about big calendar dates like Mother's Day and Father's Day, it felt like a rare moment of genuine sensitivity.At first, messages like "Prefer not to get our Father's Day emails?" seemed thoughtful - but as more companies copied the idea, the emails started piling up.This year, my inbox has received more messages about avoiding Father's Day than actual Father's Day adverts.
Julie Lamont, a grief counsellor at Butterflies Bereavement Support in Eastleigh, Hampshire, believes the original intent behind opt-out emails was positive."I think the concept is lovely, it comes from compassion and understanding which is something we don't normally see in a commercial environment," she said.But since more companies have adopted the idea, she said the gesture now felt like a "marketing ploy"."What started out as a wonderful, thoughtful thing from Bloom & Wild has turned into something that has become tortuous for people who are coping with loss."
Rather than offering comfort, she said, the unsolicited emails could act as painful reminders and leave people feeling powerless over how they navigate their grief."In dealing with loss we need to feel that we have a modicum of control," she said."And if that is questioned... we feel totally manipulated."
Jumping on the bandwagon
Bloom & Wild's co-founder Aron Gelbard said the idea for opt-out emails came directly from customers, who asked if they could be excluded from receiving emails about Mother's Day.In 2019, the flower company became the first to contact customers directly, offering opt-outs for sensitive occasions."We expected there to be some uptake, but the uptake was overwhelmingly positive — we had 17,000 customers opt out within the first 24 hours."Despite concerns it might hurt sales, Mr Gelbard said customers actually ordered more at other times of the year because they viewed the company more positively.
Bloom & Wild went on to launch the Thoughtful Marketing Movement - a campaign encouraging other businesses to follow suit.But as brands with no relevance to Mother's Day began adopting the idea, Mr Gelbard said it started to lose its authenticity."It felt like businesses were starting to jump on the bandwagon… and it was starting to look a little bit performative."He also noted the volume of opt-out emails landing in inboxes had become overwhelming, with people getting tens, even hundreds, of the messages every year.In 2024, Bloom & Wild decided to stop sending opt-out emails. Instead, they now offer a preference centre on their website where customers can choose to mute emails about occasions like Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, and Grandparents' Day."But we don't message people about any one occasion specifically," Mr Gelbard added.
Vikki Randles, a marketing expert from Reading, Berkshire, said the approach was about showing empathy by putting the customer first - but agreed it only worked when used appropriately. "It has to be authentic," she said."If you're selling a product that's relevant to Father's Day gifting then yes, it's a responsible thing to do. "But if you're selling, for example, children's toys - which aren't necessarily connected to Father's Day - then I would question their motives."Despite losing her own dad eight years ago, Ms Randles said she usually did not opt out of Father's Day emails, as she still buys gifts for her husband on behalf of their children."Sometimes I think companies are damned if they do, damned if they don't," she added.
While it has been five years since Dad died, each Father's Day still carries a quiet weight for me, as it does for so many others. As brands try to balance empathy with engagement, perhaps the most meaningful gesture is simply allowing people the choice to opt for silence.

Risky route to Square Mile: Windfall for Osborne - but is Robey Warshaw really worth £146m? asks ALEX BRUMMER
The presence of George Osborne at boutique advisers Robey Warshaw, and the fabulous payouts to partners following the £146million sale to New York upstart Evercore, is certain to garner attention. Ex-Chancellors have enjoyed stellar City careers after stepping down. Nigel Lawson at Barclays and John Major at private equity barons Carlyle come to mind. Fortunes beyond the dreams of avarice rarely are achieved. Of more interest is what Evercore thinks it is buying. In founders Simon Robey and Simon Warshaw, it is acquiring dealmakers supreme who advised on many of the biggest takeovers of our time without being encumbered by an army of traders and financiers. Raising the loans and bonds is left to other houses. Since starting out just over a decade ago, the firm has advised on £452billion of bids and deals, including landmark transactions such as Comcast's acquisition of Sky and Softbank's takeover of British smart chip innovator Arm. Suffice it to say, the firm has been a hidden hand in selling some of the UK's crown jewels. However, together Robey Warshaw and Evercore were part of the defence team which saved AstraZeneca from the clutches of US predator Pfizer. Evercore should benefit from that expertise, but it is likely to prove a depreciating asset. Robey Warshaw doesn't bear much comparison to the more diverse previous generation of UK merchant bankers. Nevertheless, starting in 1989 when Deutsche Bank snapped up Morgan Grenfell, merchant banks became a doomed species. In 1995 Swiss Bank Corporation, later absorbed by UBS, bought Britain's top dealmaking house SG Warburg. Five years later, Citigroup swooped on Schroders investment banking arm and Chase Manhattan (now part of JP Morgan) gobbled up Robert Fleming. JP Morgan would buy blue-blooded corporate broker Cazenove in 2009. All these deals represented the effort by the European and American banks to gain a bigger hold in the City, in much the same way as Roger Altman's Evercore now seeks to do. In the sometimes-stuffy atmosphere of the historic Square Mile, the presence of old-line names and networks was useful over the short-term. The boost often proved temporary with respected names removed from letterheads and rainmakers drifting away. The patient, organic approach of Goldman Sachs, which first caught the eye when it defended ICI against Hanson in 1991, arguably proved more durable. Evercore's approach is a pricey long shot. China syndrome All is not well at HSBC. It was the choice of the former management team of chairman Mark Tucker and Noel Quinn to extricate the bank from markets across the globe and focus on Asia. In terms of catching the high-speed train in the Pacific and Middle East it made sense. Over-exposure to Hong Kong and the unknowable events in China were always a risk. The bank's 26 per cent slide in profits contrasts sharply with bumper outcomes at the UK's other High Street banks and most American lenders. Income fell in the first half of the year as HSBC suffered from declining Hong Kong property values and a hit of £1.6billion on its investment in China's Bank of Communications. Identifying a new chairman, with sufficient silky skills to keep Beijing on side, has proved tricky. But investors should be reassured by a fresh £2.3billion share buyback, on top of that already unveiled. Holding the line One of the oddities of online lender Revolut, as it grew into a £33.6billion behemoth, has been its operations using a less-than-universally recognised Lithuanian banking licence. Rachel Reeves, anxious to underpin the UK's reputation for being at the cutting edge of fintech, is seeking to smooth its transition to a full British bank. Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey is less gung-ho. As former head of the Financial Conduct Authority and someone deep in the engine room at the time of the 2008 financial crisis, he naturally is reluctant to kick away the traces just yet. Revolut thinks that buying a US bank might provide an easier route to approval. Founder Nikolay Storonsky should be concerned that Bailey will get to Fed chair Jay Powell and block permissions, before Trump dispenses with his services.

Revolut eyes US expansion amid clash between Chancellor and the Bank of England over its UK licence
Revolut wants to expand in the US amid tensions between the Chancellor and the Bank of England over its plans in the UK. The British fintech firm is reportedly weighing up buying an American lender to allow it to operate in the US as the wait for full authorisation in the UK drags on. Revolut's application for a UK banking licence was approved in 2024 after a three-year delay, but it still faces restrictions on lending. It emerged this week that Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey blocked Rachel Reeves from brokering a meeting with regulators and Revolut to help the company secure a full licence. She had tried to set up talks between the fintech, the Treasury and the Prudential Regulation Authority, which is an arm of the Bank. Bailey had concerns that the Bank's regulatory activities should be independent from political interference, the Financial Times reported. Revolut and the Bank declined to comment. The Treasury has been contacted. The US market would provide access to a large pool of customers and potentially higher deposits.

MG takes on Tesla for a fraction of price with its new IM range – although some of the features look VERY familiar
I'VE seen a telly in the back of an MG before. At a car boot sale. 7 7 7 Never have I seen an MG with it's own flip-down widescreen TV. Or driven an MG with supercar acceleration and air suspension. Until today. You see MG is going all fancy with a new sub-brand called IM, which stands for Intelligence in Motion. Probably more in keeping with today's world than Morris Garages. The value-packed superminis and SUVs are here to stay — and there's more to come. But MG wants a slice of the lucrative corporate market too. So IM5 is a fully loaded electric saloon (cough, Tesla Model 3) and IM6 is the SUV version (cough, Tesla Model Y). Let's now run through the headlines . . . The fastest versions are comically fast, like 751hp with 802Nm of torques. Like, see-ya-later Lando-fast. Major car brand reveals compact £20k supermini EV will be released in UK in just two years The IM5 Long Range version has an official WLTP range of 441 miles. London to Edinburgh in one go. But it's less powerful at 407 horses. Which is still rapido. Recharging to 80 per cent takes just 17 minutes thanks to the industry-leading 800v battery tech. Like Porsche. And Kia. The cheapest? That's the IM5 Standard Range with a 304-mile battery costing £39,450. Crucially, dipping below £40k will save owners £2k in road tax in the years ahead. Both IM5 and IM6 get four-wheel steering as standard. So they'll outturn an MG4 in town. And they can self-park. Press a button and the boot lowers for the dog to jump in. But that's only on the top-spec SUV with air suspension for now. IM6 is also the first MG with massaging seats. And that optional flip-down TV. From here on out, the cabins are pretty much copy-and-paste. The dash is crowned by a 26in widescreen display and there's a second control panel in the centre console with hard controls for the things we use most. It's quiet in here. It's comfy. It's roomy. There are lots of details which remind me of other brands. But, hey, these are Chinese cars. That's what they do. I've done a checklist of familiar features elsewhere on this page. The bottom line is, MG has done an excellent job providing families with sensibly priced cars backed by a seven-year warranty. It is now a top ten manufacturer. These IM cars take MG into new territory, yet they're still a fair chunk cheaper than a similar-spec Tesla, BYD Seal or Polestar 2. Even with a TV in the back. 7 7 NOW I'M SEEING DOUBLE HERR are ten features on the IM cars which look familiar: Flip-down TV. Like a BMW i7. Just a bit smaller. Watch Netflix or YouTube. Play video games. That car-shaped key's pretty cool. Been in a Porsche recently? Steering wheel controls to adjust the wing mirror. Like a Tesla. Merc-inspired gear selector and 'cheese-grater' speakers in the doors. No door handles. Oh yeah, Fiat 500. They've got a button. Proper deep and soft carpet mats. Like a Rolls-Royce. What, what. Indicate to turn left or right and a blindspot camera pops up on the dash. You can thank Hyundai for that. Autonomous reversing tech, a la BMW. The car remembers the last 100 metres before you pulled up – then retraces it for you. Like pressing rewind on a movie. Widescreen dash. Like, er, everyone else, really. Finally, looks. Tesla vibes at the front and sides. Shades of Aston Martin at the rear with that ducktail spoiler and integrated lightbar. 7 7
