AS Malaysia positions itself to become a leading digital economy—projected to contribute over 25.5% to the nation's GDP this year—Taylor's College is stepping up to meet the demand for agile, digital-first talent with the launch of its new Diploma in Digital Design (DIDD).
The programme aims to equip students with the practical know-how and essential skills needed to thrive in today's technology-driven economy.
Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities like the Taylor's Virtual Online Future Technology and Extended Reality (VORTEX XR Lab) and 3D modelling studio at Taylor's Lakeside Campus.
These immersive environments allow students to integrate real-world objects into digital settings through extended reality (XR) applications and develop full-scale 3D virtual reality (VR) simulations.
Hands-on access to such technologies prepares graduates for specialised roles across digital media sectors.
According to DIDD programme director Hijjaz Hamidi Abdul Aziz, the curriculum is supported by both cutting-edge facilities and experienced faculty, with a strong focus on industry readiness.
'We want to produce people who can interact, collaborate and solve real-world problems using digital design - in their thinking, attitude and ethics,' he said.
Aligned with national goals
The DIDD also aligns closely with Malaysia's Digital Economy Blueprint by cultivating agile digital talent to excel in diverse digital fields.
Taylor's College campus director Josephine Tan highlighted that the programme addresses critical skill gaps in Malaysia's growing digital and creative sectors.
'Our forward-thinking curriculum and hands-on learning approach are designed to produce graduates who are not only industry-ready but are also capable of making meaningful contributions to Malaysia's development as a global digital hub,' she said.
Experience-driven learning
Taylor's College is among the few Malaysian institutions incorporating work-based learning (WBL) into a digital design diploma.
Delivered as a 20-week module in the final semester, this structured industry placement provides students with practical, in-demand skills.
Unlike traditional internships, the WBL component is designed to boost students' credibility as modern digital architects.
Hijjaz Hamidi noted that students will be guided by leaders in established digital companies.
Industry partners such as CraveFX, FusionWorks, iTrainKids, Geek Fam, Cause Effect Consultants and Virtualtech Frontier have committed to offering close mentorship, guiding students through real-world projects and helping them refine their capabilities in professional settings.
'WBL offers our students a significant advantage by bridging the gap between academia and industry,' Taylor's College School of Diploma and Professional Studies head Dr Wong Chee Kong shared.
'This mode of learning provides continuous mentorship from industry experts, enhancing students' learning experiences and significantly boosting their employability upon graduation,' he added.
Crafting competent creators
During the launch's experiential session, Hijjaz Hamidi showcased some of the creative and technical competencies students will develop throughout the programme.
He also emphasised the importance of connecting with global creative communities, where students design and contribute 3D assets—such as characters, props and virtual accessories—to shared online libraries.
'Designers today don't work alone,' he said. 'They build with others, share resources and support each other. That's the kind of designer we want to produce.'
This collaborative mindset is woven into the curriculum, encouraging students to adapt, problem-solve and innovate in dynamic digital environments.
DIDD graduates can also advance to related Bachelor's degrees at Taylor's University, including the Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Creative Media or enter Year 2 of the Bachelor of Interactive Spatial Design (Honours).
From 2021 to 2023, Taylor's College's Diploma graduates achieved a 100% employability rate, as verified by the Higher Education Ministry, a testament to the institution's focus on producing job-ready talent.

Sure or not: Penang rebukes tourism survey, cites official hotel data to prove it has more tourist visits than Perak

GEORGE TOWN: Penang has strongly refuted findings from a recent Statistics Malaysia Department report that the state trailed Perak in attracting domestic tourists in 2024, citing official hotel stay data that paints a far different picture. State tourism committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said that the 'Domestic Tourism Survey 2024' released by the department was a sample-based study and not a reflection of actual tourism figures. 'The survey is based on sampling and questionnaire feedback, not actual hotel records,' Wong said in a statement. 'While this method is widely used in research, its accuracy hinges on the sample size and how well it represents the population', he said. According to Wong, only 204 Enumeration Blocks were sampled in Penang out of 2,819 nationwide — a figure he said was too small to draw meaningful conclusions about the state's tourism performance. 'Such a limited sample cannot reflect the true strength of Penang's tourism sector,' he said. Wong instead cited Tourism Malaysia's official hotel statistics that showed Penang recorded 5.2 million domestic tourists and three million international tourists in 2024, totalling over 8.2 million hotel guests. In contrast, he said, Perak only recorded about 4.18 million domestic hotel stays. He also questioned the survey's methodology, adding that respondents were household members asked to recall trips over the past year — a process he described as 'retrospective and highly subjective.' 'The survey was not conducted at airports, hotels, or tourist attractions but through household interviews, which is unsuitable for high-impact destinations like Penang,' Wong said. He further criticised the inclusion of day-trippers—who made up 66.8% of respondents—as skewing the data. Many, he noted, were likely returning to their hometowns during festive seasons like Hari Raya, which does not constitute tourism in the economic sense. 'These visitors typically don't stay overnight, spend less, and have limited direct economic impact,' he said. 'This distorts the picture, especially for states with more premium tourism offerings.' While acknowledging that Statistics Malaysia Department's survey may offer some insight into travel trends, Wong said it should not be used to assess tourism performance, particularly in states with strong hotel and hospitality industries. 'The data we should trust is the actual records of hotel stays and tourism receipts, which clearly show Penang's continued strength as one of Malaysia's top travel destinations,' he added.

Hong Kong to regain IPO crown

Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Chinese battery giant CATL was among the new listings on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, with PwC saying the city was expected to be the IPO leader this year. HONG KONG: Hong Kong is expected to lead the world in IPO financing this year despite uncertainty from geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs, accountancy giant PwC said on Wednesday. The Chinese financial hub's capital market has rebounded strongly this year, with dozens of Chinese companies piling into the city to raise overseas capital despite regulatory pressure from Beijing and uncertainty over its national security laws. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said its statistics suggest nearly 100 companies will raise at least HK$200 billion ($25.5 billion) in Hong Kong this year. It said Hong Kong's IPO wave has benefited largely from policy support from the Chinese government and optimised listing rules by Hong Kong regulators that include streamlining approval processes. 'The improved market liquidity and rising international investor demand for core Chinese assets also drove market activity,' PwC's Hong Kong capital markets leader Eddie Wong said in a note. The Hong Kong stock exchange welcomed 44 IPOs by the end of June, according to PwC. 'We expect 2025 to be the most active fundraising year for IPOs in the past four years,' said Diamantina Leong, PwC's Hong Kong capital markets services partner. PwC said total proceeds raised in Hong Kong jumped 701 percent to HK$107.1 billion (US$13.7 billion) compared to the same period last year. In comparison, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq have raised HK$55.3 billion ($7.0 billion) and HK$71.9 billion ($9.2 billion) in IPOs respectively so far this year, it said. Hong Kong's IPO boom is expected to continue into the first half of next year, Wong told reporters at a presentation. Data from the Hong Kong stock exchange showed it is processing more than 170 listing applications. 'We expect strong momentum to continue, supported by several mega deals,' Wong said. Many of the world's biggest fund-raisings by Chinese companies, including battery giant CATL, pharmaceutical firm Jiangsu Hengrui and soy sauce maker Foshan Haitian, kept up the buzz in Hong Kong's capital markets. Consulting firm Deloitte also forecast in a June report that Hong Kong would be the IPO leader this year, although its analysts warned that 'adverse geopolitical or macroeconomic disruptions' could constrain optimism. Chinese e-commerce titan Shein is switching to Hong Kong to complete its debut after failing to list in New York and London, Bloomberg reported this year. Hong Kong hopes to become the preferred listing platform for international companies, 'especially those that find it challenging to access capital markets in the US or Europe', the city's financial secretary Paul Chan said last month. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Clear the air on hotel demolition job'

Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: Sohan Das Text Size: Wong hoped that the MACC would do an inclusive investigation to avoid similar situations happening here. LABUAN: Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said the relevant ministry or agency should clear the air on the tender process for the demolition of the derelict Hotel Labuan since a local contractor had lodged a report on alleged irregularities and possible political interference in the process. Adding that the contractor took the right step in reporting the complaint to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Wong said: 'It is puzzling why a qualified local contractor with all the required necessary CIDB (Construction Industry Development Board) certification and licence and submitted a lower bid for the job was sidelined. 'Preference was given to an outsider and this has sparked grave concern over the treatment of local contractors.' Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article.
