Comrade of century
A section of leaders was eyeing a new political combine—to get the Indian Union Muslim League into the LDF fold, with an eye on cementing a long-term rule for the Left front in the state.
Informal talks between senior leaders were held at varying levels. Several possibilities were discussed. But one question kept bothering them - who would tell VS? The veteran was LDF convener then, and the most powerful leader who virtually called the shots both within the party and the front. IUML leader Kutty Ahammed Kutty who shared a warm rapport with VS was handed the task. Kutty conveyed the idea to VS but not before prefacing it with a request that VS should not be in a hurry to nip the proposal in the bud. VS heard him through, and without batting an eyelid, pronounced his judgement that is now part of state political lore: 'Kutty, it is not yet time for the Congress to die in Kerala!' A deeply insightful statement especially relevant in the current political scenario.
Ignoring short-term political gains, the far-sighted Marxist batted for a line that till date underscores how both the Left and the Congress remain relevant in their fight against the saffron front in Kerala's political landscape.
To VS, it was simple logic. A UDF minus the IUML would naturally weaken the Congress. And in no time, Hindutva forces would rush in to occupy the vacant political space. Though a leader without much formal education, VS always stood out from his peers for his innate political acumen.
Velikkakath Sankaran Achuthanandan, who passed away on Monday, remains an unparallelled Communist, the biggest crowd puller in recent times, last of the old-school Marxists and one of the greatest mass leaders Kerala has ever seen.

Phone-Tapping Rampant Under Revanth Reddy, Alleges Opposition Leader
Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader and former IPS officer RS Praveen Kumar has lodged a formal complaint with the police levelling serious allegations against Telangana's Congress government. In the complaint, he has alleged widespread phone tapping under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's administration. Praveen Kumar was among the first to complain about his phone being tapped during the previous BRS government. He has also appeared before the Special Investigation Team that is probing the alleged phone tapping. While the SIT's primary focus has been on surveillance under the former BRS government, Praveen Kumar has used the opportunity to expand the scope of the investigation. He has claimed that the present Congress government is utilizing "high-end dark web tools" to illegally intercept the communications of its own ministers, opposition leaders, and even businessmen. He has submitted a written complaint to the SIT, reportedly including video evidence of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy allegedly admitting to surveillance. Praveen Kumar cited instances where Mr Reddy reportedly knew about private conversations between ministers, later confronting one of them with the details. He questioned how such information could have been accessed without illicit phone tapping. He also alleged that a journalist was reprimanded by the Chief Minister for speaking to another BRS leader, again raising suspicions of surveillance. The BRS leader also pointed to media reports suggesting that malware had been planted on ministers' devices to intercept calls and messages. He urged the SIT to summon the affected ministers and conduct forensic examinations of their phones to uncover the truth. The complaint from Praveen Kumar adds a new dimension to the already complex phone-tapping investigation in Telangana. Previously, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had stated his willingness to cooperate with the SIT if he received a notice, emphasizing that while phone tapping itself isn't illegal, strict procedures must be followed. The BRS has been vocal in demanding a High Court-monitored inquiry into the phone-tapping allegations and has called for the government to submit a sealed list to the court detailing whose phones are being tapped. They have emphasized Section 5 of the Telegraph Act, which only permits phone tapping in the interest of national security. The SIT now faces the challenging task of investigating not only the alleged phone tapping during the previous administration, but also the fresh accusations of ongoing surveillance under the current government, making the probe even more politically charged.

Operation Sindoor to garner votes in elections: Praniti Shinde
Agency: New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Congress member Praniti Shinde on Monday drew parallels between Operation Sindoor and the Colosseum in Rome, which was famous for hosting gladiatorial contests. Participating in the debate on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha, Shinde accused the government of turning national security into a spectacle to distract the public before elections. 'Operation Sindoor sounds quite patriotic, but it appears to have been created for the media by the government. No one can tell what was achieved by Operation Sindoor. How many terrorists were caught? How many of our fighter jets were drowned? Whose fault it was," the first-term member from Solapur in Maharashtra asked. She said it was for the government to be accountable, but there are curbs on asking questions. 'This government doesn't want to listen to any questions, it runs away from being held accountable," Shinde said. She said the present-day situation reminded her of the Colosseum in Rome, which was a unique example of architecture but an equally bad and disgusting example of the politics of the day. 'It is said that the structure was built to keep the people busy in games and entertainment and distract them from the problems of the day," Shinde said. She said the government was also indulging in something similar, but just games and entertainment are not enough in the present times. 'Just before a major election, a terror attack takes place and the government gets busy with retaliatory action. The government does not know where the terrorists came from and where they went, but gets to launch an attack on a neighbouring country and win votes on that account," Shinde said. She said she stands in the House with 'anger, grief and a deep sense of insult" on behalf of the soldiers who got to know about the 'ceasefire" with Pakistan not from their prime minister but from a foreign leader. 'The terrorists from Pahalgam have not been traced. The prime minister was busy addressing an election rally in Bihar while the victims' funeral pyres were still burning," she said. Shinde also criticised a reported statement of the external affairs minister that appeared to warn the enemy ahead of an attack, asking whether that led to Indian jets being shot down. 'Under pressure from the United States, this government agreed to a shameful ceasefire. Foreign policy has become photo ops with the Indian diaspora," the Congress leader said, claiming that India's standing among its neighbours, once strong due to its 'neighbourhood first" policy, has significantly declined. BJP chief seeks transparency on caste survey, vows priority for BCs in elections
1 2 Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao on Monday urged the state govt to publicly release the findings of the recently conducted caste survey. He alleged that the Revanth Reddy administration is attempting to mislead the Backward Classes (BC) community by citing only 42% reservation, despite reports suggesting that BCs constitute around 52% of the state's population. Addressing members of various BC associations, Rao stressed the need for transparency in the survey process. "The caste survey was not conducted by a central agency, but by the state govt. Therefore, it is crucial that the collected data is verified and made public," he said. Rao reiterated the BJP's commitment to ensuring adequate political representation for BCs in the upcoming local body elections. He assured that the party would allocate the maximum number of seats to BC candidates, regardless of whether the Congress govt upholds proper reservation norms. "We are dedicated to giving BCs top priority in the forthcoming elections," he said. Out of 52 councillor seats, he claimed that the BC-E reservation category enabled Muslim candidates to secure 35 seats, which he argued came at the cost of genuine BC communities such as the Yadavas and Gouds.
