28 left without school place at Glan Llyn Primary School
Glan Llyn Primary School's shortage of places was discussed at the Llanwern Community Council's annual general meeting.
The meeting took place on May 27 at Llanwern Village Hall.
Councillors George, Brown, Clemo, Collingbourne, Davies and Grant were in attendance, with apologies from Councillor Jones and Ward Councillor Kellaway.
The issue of the school's capacity was highlighted alongside various ongoing large-scale planning applications within the Glan Llyn and Llanwern regeneration schemes.
These applications, which are in different stages of approval, involve the development of residential units, a primary school, local retail and commercial units, and green infrastructure.
The meeting also saw the re-election of Councillor George as Chair of the Council and Councillor Davies as Vice Chair.
The council's internal audit for the financial year 2024/25 was successfully completed, with financial matters including routine payments, a £200 Chair's purse for the year, and the receipt of a £19,946 precept from Newport City Council confirmed.
The council also addressed community safety and infrastructure issues, continuing their collaboration with Redrow on drainage and road improvements along Station Road.
There were also concerns raised by residents of Glan Llyn about traffic safety.
The council is exploring alternative measures, including radar speed signage and potential road safety enhancements, subject to regulatory approvals.
Further planning is underway to develop the Village Hall car park, which now requires a Green Infrastructure Statement in line with revised Welsh planning guidance.
The council is consulting specialists to incorporate biodiversity enhancements into the revised application.
There are also preparations in full swing for the upcoming village fete on June 28.
Dog fouling remains a local concern, with further updates expected from Ward Councillor Kellaway.
The next Llanwern Community Council meeting is scheduled for June 30, 2025, to be held both in person at the Village Hall and remotely.

Portskewett bungalow refused on road safety grounds
Craig Senior was refused planning permission for the bungalow which would have been built on land at the back of number 65 Main Road, Portskewett. He appealed to Welsh planning body Planning and Environment Decisions Wales which sent independent inspector Anthony Thickett to view the narrow track that was proposed as an access from Main Road to the bungalow. He concluded Monmouthshire County Council was right to refuse planning permission and wrote in his report: 'I note the site is within walking distance of a number of facilities but the proposed development would inevitably lead to an increase in the use of an access which is substandard with regards to its width and visibility to Main Road. 'For these reasons, I conclude that the proposed development would have an adverse impact on highway safety.' Mr Thickett said the track already serves nine properties, including number 65, and a field though four properties have drives on to main road and he thought a further off street parking space has been created but said: 'From my observations, the occupiers of at least five properties (not counting No. 65) actively use the track to access garages and parking spaces to the rear of the houses.' He described its visibility at the access to Main Road as 'poor in both directions' with a wall and telegraph pole to the east and a wall to the west while a line of parked cars either side of the track 'limited visibility even further'. READ MORE: Extension for Portskewett shop approved by councillors As the track isn't wide enough for vehicles to enter and exit at the same time Mr Thickett said drivers waiting to turn in would restrict the 'free flow' of traffic on Main Road and stated: 'Drivers approaching the track would have little warning of vehicles exiting the track and vice versa.' He also said vehicles turning left, from the track, to pass a vehicle waiting to enter the track, would have to cross on to the wrong side of the road, due to the line of parked cars. Mr Thickett also said he didn't believe widening the track to provide a footway would overcome the poor visibility to Main Road.

Asda slashes price of school uniforms to as little as £1.60 in huge sale – but you'll have to be quick
PARENTS are rushing to Asda to stock up on school uniforms, after the shop launched a 20% price cut on some items. If you have a child who is having a growth spurt, it could be perfect for getting some extra polo shirts or trousers. One bargain hunter uploaded photos of their local Asda George store which had slashed prices on a number of children's items including plain joggers, cargo denim shorts and briefs. They shared their findings to the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, where people have been quick to say they also want to stock up. Meanwhile, another shopper revealed that parents keen to stock up on school uniform threads have just hours to snag some savings. "Also 20% off school uniforms until the 29th," the user wrote. You can ask your local council what help is available and when you need to apply. If you can't get targeted help from your council, there are other options to get cheap uniform. Speak to your school to see if they can offer you some clothing. Some charities offer help to families in need too.
