
S.F.'s newest dining trend? Old restaurants
Those sentences could have been written by me a few months ago, although I'm more of a whiskey sipper than a shooter. After an extensive renovation overseen by the late owner Sam DuVall 's daughter, Samantha Bechtel, Izzy's is back slinging steaks, and the projected history and resonance is as thick as the house creamed spinach. If the original Izzy's was a late '80s simulacrum of a Prohibition Era speakeasy, the new Izzy's is a 2025 interpretation of a luxurious late '80s steakhouse inspired by a Prohibition Era speakeasy.
This year, at least as far as dining is concerned, what's old is new again. Izzy's is one of a handful of legacy San Francisco restaurants that have recently been given a fresh lease on life. Old standbys like Turtle Tower, Wayfare Tavern and Crustacean have reopened in sparkling new locations. Others have overhauled their interiors and given menus the spit shine. But the house specialty is reliably the same — nostalgia.
The current economic climate is an arduous one for independent restaurateurs, especially those looking to launch their first business. My colleague Cesar Hernandez and I recently introduced the Now List, a quarterly round-up of the best new restaurants in the Bay Area. Of the 25 entries, 15 are either an additional location of an existing concept or are operated by groups that have at least one other restaurant. Like Marvel franchises and the Polly Pocket movie, restaurants that can trade on existing IP have an advantage.
Sam DuVall was wise to that in 1987, when San Franciscans would still have remembered Gomez's Barbary Coast gin joint. Well, maybe not all San Franciscans, but certainly Herb Caen, who described 'the long climb to the second floor, where the bar was jammed with winners, losers, beauties and beastly bohemians' in a column that year. DuVall crammed the walls with Gomez-related memorabilia, old-timey advertisements and sepia-toned photographs.
Much of that ephemera, together with memorabilia from Izzy's Steak and Chops, remains on gallery walls on the second floor, but the downstairs is dominated by a new mural by artist Matthew Benedict depicting the characters from William Saroyan's 'The Time of Your Life,' a play inspired by Izzy Gomez's clientele. Saroyan himself looks approvingly down at the refurbished dining room, with its long soapstone bar, milk glass pendants and checkerboard floors. Design firm Gachot Studios understood the assignment.
North Beach Restaurant, which served Tuscan fare from its opening in 1970 until it closed in 2023, reopened under new ownership late last year. Its dining rooms, spread across two floors, have received a similarly respectful treatment courtesy of local designer Maria Quiros, melding the old — a black-and-white photo of former ownerLorenzo Petroni mugging for the camera, a mirror so weathered it's more Rorschach Test than reflective surface — with the new. Booths have been upholstered in a sumptuous mossy green. Arresting canvases from Robert De Niro, Sr., brighten up walls. I don't know whether the glassware and china are holdovers from North Beach's previous incarnation, but their heft and quality are unusual for a contemporary restaurant.
It takes very little to make the nostalgia flow at North Beach. One evening, seated downstairs next to the Willie Brown room, which boasts its own private entrance, I asked our server about the mayors, governors and other political players who did their deals at the restaurant during the Petroni years. Our server needed but the gentlest encouragement to dish. It would be unseemly to repeat his ranking of the least gracious political clientele, but apparently Arnold Schwarzenegger is a real gent.
And the food at these establishments? Generally solid, but somewhat besides the point. You're not going to the latest Superman film for the dialogue, but rather to visit old friends and see what the new director has done with the joint. At Izzy's, stick to steaks and the dynamite potatoes au gratin, saving room for the warm cruellers, fried and glazed to order. At North Beach, the tweaked menu features more dishes reflective of the new chef's roots in Emilia-Romagna. Pastas and braised meats are a good bet.
The caveat here is that I was not a patron of Izzy's or North Beach 1.0, and I therefore have no basis for comparison. I called up my uncle, who dined at Izzy's with some regularity during his bachelor days in the '90s. His voice took on the aural equivalent of a Vaseline-lens flashback as he recounted the cocktails he and his pals would throw back before dinner, the skirt steak that they definitively decided was the best cut on offer, the hot sauce bar with dozens of selections.
He'd been back post-remodel, and I asked him how it measured up. 'Well I don't drink anymore, so that probably doesn't help,' he admitted, 'but it's never as good as you remember.'
Nostalgia — and alluring new interiors — will get people in the door. If superhero movies are any indication, these historic restaurants have a bright future ahead of them.

Drinks: A martini would be an excellent place to start, but with any classic cocktail, you're in good hands here. Wines by the glass, including Coravin pours, draught and bottled beers, and a few N/A cocktails.
Best practices: If you don't have a res, the bar is a beautiful place to dine. If you prefer something more secluded, angle for one of the private booths in back. Upstairs, there are club chairs by the fireplace for lingering over a nightcap. Skip the appetizers and the burger.

Best practices: North Beach Restaurant is popular with large groups; on one visit, a party brought their own accordion player, so… be aware that that could happen. The main floor is light-filled during the day, while the basement level reminded me of 'The Cask of Amontillado,' but in a cozy sort of way.

This event delivered big when S.F. needed a win in 2023. Organizers canceled it for 2025
San Francisco's Sunset District night market — the wildly popular post-pandemic event launched by Supervisor Joel Engardio — will not return for its third year in 2025. Organizers confirmed that the market will not be held this year and blamed it on delayed reimbursements from the city for events held last year. Though one merchant contacted by the Chronicle said he supports the event, others reportedly have said they no longer support the market and have soured on Engardio, who faces a recall vote in September over the permanent closure of a portion of the Upper Great Highway. Egardio acknowledged the market is 'gone … because the recall campaign poisoned local politics.' The event will return in 2026, said organizer Lily Wong. 'Due to a series of circumstances beyond our control,' Wong said, organizers didn't receive reimbursements for two night markets last year until May of this year — eight months after the last market. 'With this delay in payment, we did not feel confident planning another night market until we were fully reimbursed for the previous markets,' Wong said in a separate statement. 'The Sunset Night Market Collaborative is committed to planning and producing night markets to ensure the continuity of its success.' Wong said organizers are working with the mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development to create a night market 'more in scale with our community, and something the Sunset can be proud to have.' The department told the Chronicle in a statement that reimbursements were delayed 'due to a staffing shortage' and the night market organizers' 'slow submission of required paperwork.' The organizers were paid in full for last year's program in May after some back-and-forth to get the necessary information, according to the agency. 'Conversations about a future activation are ongoing, and we're excited to support an event that champions local businesses and celebrates API culture,' said department director of external affairs Kate Patterson. Last year the night market drew massive crowds of over 10,000, Engardio told the Chronicle, and a second one held in September drew more than 20,000 people after organizers expanded the night market. First launched in 2023, the event was seen by city leaders as a success at a time they desperately needed one, as San Francisco emerged sluggishly from the economic and social effects of the pandemic. A similar series, also popular, was launched in Chinatown. Organizers had intended to host another market this summer, but after the reimbursement delay, they've decided not to. Instead, Wong said, they are working to 'learn from the previous events and improve and enhance any future night markets.' 'We want to create diversity and work to uplift our community,' Wong said. The cancellation comes amid considerable turmoil for Engardio in his westside district. The first-term supervisor could be recalled in September over his championing of Proposition K to permanently close to cars part of the Upper Great Highway, to create a park. The measure passed by 54% of the citywide vote but residents on the west side were livid over the loss of a 2-mile stretch of the city's westernmost coastal boulevard. A business owner in the Sunset, Albert Chow, a supporter of the recall campaign and owner of Great Wall Hardware, told the San Francisco Standard, which first reported the cancellation, that many in the business community in Sunset have soured on the night market and feel that 'Engardio lacks leadership.' Chow did not return messages from the Chronicle. Wong said such detractors aren't representative of the neighborhood because the Sunset night markets have been very popular among residents. Engardio agreed, but also said the recall effort was tied to merchant opposition against him. 'The sunset night market brought joy and customers to Irving Street,' Engardio posted on social media Thursday. 'Now it's gone — not because of lack of interest, but because the recall campaign poisoned local politics. When small businesses lose, we all lose.' Daniel Ramirez, who owns Smokin D's BBQ on Irving Street and 23rd Avenue, told the Chronicle the night market has been challenging to manage. But it's also been a highly successful community-driven event that most merchants are happy with. 'Make no mistake: the vast majority of merchants along the Irving corridor found the Sunset Night Market to be a fantastic event and are eager to see its return,' Ramirez said. 'We're currently working closely with fellow merchants, the community, and organizers to explore how we can bring back another amazing night market experience.' Ramirez added that the night market is a 'true collaboration' between the Sunset, the city and merchants to create a 'fun, family-friendly event' to bring people to the neighborhood post-pandemic. Since then, it has become 'a resounding success,' both drawing enthusiasm for the west side and has been a catalyst for other neighborhoods to launch their own night markets.

Best rivalries in sports: Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor fight adds a punch
Amanda Serrano speaks with authority. Katie Taylor speaks barely above a whisper. The Puerto Rican Serrano is a 36-year-old southpaw. The Irish Taylor is a 39-year-old fighting out of the orthodox stance. Together, they've formed a sizzling rivalry in the boxing ring, earning them a spot among some of sports greatest rivalries. It'll be on global display July 11, 2025. Fighting each other for the third time, Serrano and Taylor will square off in the main event during an all-women's card at Madison Square Garden to be televised by Netflix. The first two fights were electric, with Taylor winning both by decision even though the outcome could have gone either way. Jabs, hooks, uppercuts. Non-stop action. Fightin until the final bell. The big winner, as is the case with rivalries, is the fans. Here's a look at some of the greatest sports rivalries through the years: Ford vs. Ferrari A 98-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes in the first evidence that Ford vs. Ferrari deserves a spot among greatest sport rivalries. Few of them inspire films that star Matt Damon and Christian Bale. Ford vs. Ferrari in real life was even better. In 1963, bad blood led Ford Motor Company to build a race car that would challenge Ferrari. Which at first seemed about as plausible as the Cleveland Browns building a Super Bowl contender. Or the Washington Wizards building a NBA championship team. Or the Colorado Rockies … OK, you get the drift. Yet Ferrari's superiority drove Ford in a way only a rival can. In 1966, Ferrari had a six-year winning streak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That year, Ford finally beat Ferrari, when the Ford GT40s finished 1-2-3 and a rivalry was born. Ford vanquished Ferrari yet again the following year at LeMans. Kobe vs. Shaq Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, who played together for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1996 to 2004, proved that being teammates does not preclude a rivalry. Neither does winning. They pulled off a three-peat together, leading the Lakers to the NBA championship in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Yet it would have been a stretch to call them friends. The rivalry was born on the basketball court – especially at practice – where O'Neal lacked the discipline, drive and leadership that defined Bryant. The partnership ended in 2004 when O'Neal was traded to the Miami Heat. Though O'Neal won another NBA title in 2006 with the Heat and Bryant won NBA titles in 2009 and 2010, no amount of Larry O'Brien trophies offset the loss of a special rivalry. Ohio State vs. Michigan In 2017, A self-described Ohio State fan posted on social media video of him mowing the script Ohio on the lawn of a Michigan fan. Cute, but there's not much cute about the rivalry on the football field. Woody Hayes vs. Bo Schembechler. 'The Shoe" vs. 'The Big House.'' Scarlet and grey vs. maize and blue. Any confusion over this sentence should might earn residents or Ohio or Michigan removal to another state. It's a rivalry that lives and breathes on the football field and obsesses the adjoining states. Losing sting.s But losses against this rival? They burn. The inaugural clash between the two schools took place in 1897, when Michigan fans' lawns were safe. It's lost no luster since. Michigan entered this year's game as a 19 ½ point favorite, and the Wolverines prevailed 13-10. Going on to win the national championship was Ohio State's consolation prize. Joey Chestnut vs. Takeru Kobayashi Joey 'Jaws'' Chestnut stood 6-1 and weighed over 200 pounds. Takeru 'The Tsunami'' Kobayashi stood 5-8 and weighed 130 pounds. Together, at an astounding pace, they devoured hot dogs and buns on the world's biggest stage – the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, New York. The timing of the annual contest accentuated their differences – an American man competing against a Japanese man in front of a largely American crowd on the Fourth of July – that helped stoke their competition. The rivalry was hotter than anything Nathan's was grilling on the day of the contest. Five years of hot dog eating madness. From 2005 to 2009, Chestnut and Kobayashi stood on the same stage and went head to head. Twice Kobayashi won in regulation. Twice Chestnut won in regulation. Once they went into overtime, with Chestnut prevailing in a five hot dog eat-off in 2008. Two years later, Kobayashi left the contest over a contract dispute. Last year Chestnut was barred from Nathan's because of his own contract dispute. And so the great rivalry was renewed. Jaws and a bulked-up Tsunami went head-to-head one last time with Netflix livestreaming the contest. It was no contest. Chestnut ate a world-record 83 hot dogs. Kobayashi at 66. Afterwards, on stage, they did not shake hands. They did not exchange a glance. The rivalry still burned.
