Beauregard firefighter dies in crash responding to call

A volunteer firefighter from DeRidder died as the result of crash that happened while he was responding to an emergency call for service.
The crash happened early Tuesday morning.
Shortly after 4 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating the single-vehicle crash on Scallon Road south of La. 26 in Beauregard Parish. The crash claimed the life of 23-year-old Beauregard Parish volunteer fire fighter Jonathan Ashworth.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Ashworth was driving a 2017 Ford F-150 west on Scallon Road while responding to an emergency call. For reasons still under investigation, the Ford traveled off the roadway to the left while in a curve and struck multiple trees.
Ashworth sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Due to the severity of the damage, restraint use for Ashworth is still being determined. A passenger in the vehicle, who was properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries.
A routine toxicology sample was collected and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

The state of New York has agreed to pay $450,000 to settle a lawsuit from an ex-aide to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo who alleged he sexually harassed and groped her while he was in office. The former aide, Brittany Commisso, had sued Cuomo and the state, alleging sexual harassment from the then-governor and retaliation against her after reporting the incidents. 'Until the truth is revealed, the lawsuit should not be dismissed,' they said in the statement. Cuomo resigned as governor after a report from the state attorney general determined that he had sexually harassed at least 11 women, with some alleging unwanted kissing and touching, as well as remarks about their appearances and sex lives. Commisso filed her lawsuit in late 2023, just before the expiration of the Adult Survivors Act, a special law that created a yearlong suspension of the usual time limit to sue over an alleged sexual assault. She later filed a criminal complaint accusing Cuomo of groping her but a local district attorney declined to prosecute, citing lack of sufficient evidence. The Associated Press doesn't identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they decide to tell their stories publicly, as Commisso has done. Anthony Hogrebe, a spokesperson for current Gov. Kathy Hochul, said Friday that the state 'is pleased to have settled this matter in a way that allows us to minimize further costs to taxpayers.' Memphis guard Sincere Parker arrested on assault charge after girlfriend says he choked her
Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis guard Sincere Parker was arrested Saturday on an aggravated assault charge for an attack on his girlfriend, who told police that he choked her and hit her, according to court documents. The woman told police that the attack occurred on May 27 at the Memphis apartment the couple shared. She reported that Parker pushed her, slapped her in the face and choked her, leaving her bruised and bloodied, according to a police report. The woman also told police that Parker broke her cellphone because he didn't want her to have the digital key to the apartment. A warrant for Parker's arrest was issued Friday and the 22-year-old was taken into custody Saturday. An arraignment was scheduled for Monday on charges of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor vandalism. It was not immediately clear whether Parker had an attorney. The 6-foot-3 Parker transferred to Memphis after averaging 12.2 points last season for McNeese, helping the Cowboys and coach Will Wade reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Teens charged in ‘violent' collision on Hamilton Mountain
A pair of teenage drivers have been charged following a serious crash on Hamilton Mountain last month. Hamilton police said in a media release that officers were called to a serious collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Rymal Road East and Fletcher Road on the night of June 22. A Mazda, travelling westbound on Rymal, was attempting to turn south onto Fletcher when it was struck by a Ford F-150, noted police. That truck, which was being driven by a 16-year-old male from Hamilton, was reportedly travelling at a 'high rate of speed through the intersection,' said the release. The 'violent impact' of the high-speed crash caused two occupants of the Mazda — neither of which police say were wearing a seatbelt — to be thrown from the vehicle. Both driver and passenger suffered serious, life-altering injuries, and weeks later, one individual remains in hospital in stable condition, added police. The driver of the Ford F-150, as well as a passenger, both suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital. Due to the severity of the crash, the collision reconstruction unit took over the investigation into the incident. Police said the 16-year-old driver of the Ford F-150 was arrested on July 17 and later released on an undertaking. The teen has been charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, stunt driving, speeding and careless driving causing bodily harm. The dangerous operation charges are under the criminal code, while the remaining charges are under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). The driver of the Mazda, a 17-year-old from Hamilton, was charged under the HTA with failing to properly wear a seatbelt, driving while under suspension and a G1 licence violation for not being unaccompanied by a qualified driver. A 31-year-old from Hamilton, who police identified as the owner of the Mazda, was charged under the HTA, as well as the, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA) for making a false statement, permit operation of a vehicle without insurance and permit a novice driver to contravene licence conditions. The investigation into the collision is ongoing, noted police, and any witnesses that have not yet spoken to investigators are asked to come forward by calling the collision reconstruction unit at 905-546-4753.
