CM Siddaramaiah to meet farmers protesting against land acquisition near Devanahalli

Indian Express20 hours ago

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will on July 4 meet farmers protesting against the acquisition of 1,777 acres of land, spread across 13 villages in rural Bengaluru, by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB), and discuss the matter at a Cabinet meeting on July 2.
Around 800 families from these villages in the Devanahalli-Channarayapatna region in rural Bengaluru have been protesting since 2022 against the acquisition of land by KIADB for a high-tech defence and aerospace sector park. The original decision for the land acquisition was taken in January 2022 by the BJP government headed by Basavaraj Bommai.
Amid the protests, Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil said last week that '495 acres of land belonging to three villages in Channarayapatna Hobli have been excluded from acquisition for the proposed hi-tech Defence and Aerospace Park'.
'Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will hold a meeting with Devanahalli-Channarayapatna farmer activists and leaders of the struggle on July 4. He will hold a comprehensive meeting on the demands and problems of the farmers,' the chief minister's office said after farmer leaders met him last week.
The issue reached a flash point on June 25 after the police dispersed a protest, and arrested some leaders.
Several national farmers' unions, including the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, objected to the use of police force to disperse protesters on June 25.
'KIADB had already acquired 6,000 acres from surrounding villages for the Haralur Industrial Area. Thousands of farmers and villagers were evicted in those earlier acquisitions, but no rightful compensation was awarded to them. In this context, the farmers firmly opposed the acquisition attempt for another 1,777 acres from the beginning under the banner of 'KIADB Land Acquisition Resistance Struggle Committee',' SKM said in a statement.
The farmer unions have accused the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government of following in the footsteps of the BJP government despite an assurance made ahead of the 2023 Assembly polls to withdraw the notification for the land acquisition if the Congress were to be voted to power.
'This is a gross violation of the 'Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation Act -2013' brought by the UPA2 govt led by Congress,' SKM said in the statement last week.
The Kisan Sangharsh Samiti has expressed confidence in a resolution emerging when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah meets the farmers on July 4, 'by taking the Channarayapatna farmers into confidence and engaging in dialogue with the protesters'.
Large and Medium Industries Minister Patil and K H Muniyappa, the minister in charge of the Bengaluru rural region, said at a press briefing that the preliminary notification for acquiring 1,772.2 acres of land from 13 villages in Channarayapatna Hobli was issued on August 27, 2021, followed by a government order on February 15, 2022.
'However, it was observed that farmers from this region had already lost land twice earlier for industrial projects. Taking this into account, along with the fact that the land included irrigated farmland and human habitation, the government decided to exclude 231.23 acres in Channarayapatna, 185.18 acres in Mattibarlu, and 78.21 acres in Shrotriya Tellohalli from the acquisition process,' Patil said.
The industries minister further said the KIADB acquisition of the remaining 1,232 acres across 10 villages — Palya, Haraluru, Polanahalli, Gokare Bachchenahalli, Nalluru, Mallepura, Nallappanahalli, Cheemachanahalli, Muddenahalli, and Hadayala — would proceed.
'Compensation for the acquired land will be determined by the district commissioner. Additionally, land losers will have the option to receive 10,771 sq ft of developed land per acre, which they can use for commercial purposes,' the minister said.
'With this decision, the government has honoured the demands of the farmers. The protest should now come to an end. We must strike a balance between industrial growth and agricultural welfare,' he added.
'There is no precedent for the exclusion of land once notified for acquisition for such a purpose. But in this case, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Patil have made a pro-farmer decision. This gesture should be acknowledged, and the protest should be stopped,' Muniyappa said.

'Frequent flier PM' off on 5-nation jaunt: Cong takes a jab at Modi

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his visit abroad, the Congress on Tuesday said the "frequent flier PM" is off on a 5-nation "jaunt" and alleged that he is running away from four issues, including the Manipur situation and US President Donald Trump's claims about bringing about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh also alleged that the prime minister is running away from the "revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor because of the PM's decisions". Prime Minister Modi will embark on a five-nation tour beginning July 2 to participate in the BRICS Summit in Brazil and expand India's ties with several key nations of the Global South. "When the going gets tough, the self-styled toughs get going. The Super Premium Frequent Flier PM is off on a 5-nation, 8-day jaunt," Ramesh said in a post on X. He is running away from at least four issues that are agitating the nation, Ramesh said. Ramesh alleged that the PM is running away from Manipur, "which he has not visited ever since the double engine in the state got derailed and ever since normal life in the state has got totally destroyed". The Congress leader claimed that PM Modi is also running away from revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor "because of the PM's decisions". His remarks were an apparent reference to the reported comments of India's defence attache to Indonesia. However, the Indian embassy in Indonesia, in a post on X on Sunday, had said that the defence attache's remarks have been "quoted out of context and the media reports are a misrepresentation of the intention and thrust of the presentation made by the speaker". Ramesh also claimed that the PM is running away from the continued claims by President Trump that he effected a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using the trade deal as a carrot and stick. He further alleged that the PM is running away from "the continued failure to bring the Pahalgam terrorists to justice even after 70 days". "The failure is all the more glaring given they may have been earlier involved in terror attacks in Poonch (Dec 2023) and Gagangir & Gulmarg (Oct 2024)," Ramesh said. Besides Brazil, Modi will visit Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia during the eight-day trip, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). In the first leg of the visit, Modi will undertake a visit to Ghana from July 2 to 3. From Ghana, Modi will travel to Trinidad and Tobago on a two-day visit from July 3 to 4. In the third leg of his visit, Modi will visit Argentina from July 4 to 5. In the fourth leg of his visit, Modi will travel to Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The prime minister will visit Brazil from July 5 to 8 to attend the 17th BRICS Summit followed by a state visit. In the final leg of his visit, Modi will travel to Namibia.

Operation Kagar: Telangana Congress chief Mahesh Kumar Goud hits back at Amit Shah; defends party's stance on dialogue with Maoists

HYDERABAD: Telangana Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud on Monday condemned Union minister Amit Shah 's comments about the grand old party's stand on 'Operation Kagar', launched against the Maoists by the Centre. He questioned what was wrong with asking the Centre to hold talks with the Maoists. "The entire country saw how BJP withdrew from the war against Pakistan at the behest of US President Donald Trump's unilateral diktat to the central govt. What moral right do Amit Shah and BJP have to even question Congress' stand on Naxalites when the Modi govt agreed to a ceasefire and to hold talks with Pakistan, which sponsored terrorists, resulting in the Pahalgam attack?" he told reporters, after inspecting arrangements being made for AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge's July 4 visit to Telangana. Kharge would address Congress leaders and workers at LB Stadium on July 4. Congress has always prioritised peace, internal security, and national unity. Dialogue and diplomacy should never be seen as weaknesses but rather as tools to protect democracy and resolve internal conflict. The comments made by Amit Shah against Congress were politically motivated, he said. "The BJP govt stopped the war against Pakistan on the directions of Donald Trump. Why has Amit Shah not made any comments on this issue?" he asked.

"Super Premium Frequent Flier PM...": Congress MP Jairam Ramesh attacks PM Narendra Modi ahead of his 5-nation visit

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, ahead of his five-nation visit. The Congress leader alleged that PM Modi is running away from national issues. Sharing an X post, Jairam Ramesh wrote, "When the going gets tough, the self-styled toughs get going. The Super Premium Frequent Flier PM is off on a 5-nation, 8-day jaunt. He is running away from at least 4 issues that are agitating the nation." Listing the national issues, Ramesh targeted PM Modi over the ethnic violence in Manipur . "1. Manipur, which he has not visited ever since the double engine in the state got derailed and ever since normal life in the state has got totally destroyed," he wrote on X. On the issue of Operation Sindoor , he alleged that India suffered setbacks on the first two days of the operation and also mentioned US President Donald Trump's claim of mediation between India and Pakistan. Live Events "2. Revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor because of the PM's decisions. 3. Continued claims by President Trump that he effected a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using the trade deal as a carrot and stick," he wrote. Ramesh also targeted the Prime Minister for not bringing the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to justice. "4. The continued failure to bring the Pahalgam terrorists to justice, even after 70 days. The failure is all the more glaring given they may have been earlier involved in terror attacks in Poonch (Dec 2023) and Gagangir & Gulmarg (Oct 2024)," the post further read. Earlier, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched an attack against the BJP-led government over his allegations of mediation by the United States in Operation Sindoor, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "followed" Donald Trump following a call by the US leader. Addressing a convention of Congress workers in Bhopal, Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP-RSS and alleged that if slight pressure is exerted on them, "they run away out of fear". "Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. If slight pressure is put on them, they run away out of fear. When Trump called Modiji, Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet came from the US. Indira Gandhi said, I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference. This is their character; all of them are like this. Since the Independence movement, they have had this habit of writing letters of surrender," Rahul Gandhi said. Meanwhile, PM Modi will embark on a five-nation visit from July 2, during which he will attend the BRICS Summit in Brazil and hold meetings with leaders of Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Namibia to strengthen bilateral ties.
