THE world's biggest car crash test has been filmed at a former military base in Scotland for a new Channel 4 documentary.
Filmmakers have staged a high speed motorway pileup involving a 30-tonne HGV lorry and eight cars in an attempt to gain new insights into car safety.

The stunt will be shown on Sunday night on a Channel 4 documentary
The first-of-its-kind experiment took place on a two-mile runway at the former RAF Machrihanish base near Campbeltown, Argyll.
The stunt, estimated to have cost £2 million, will be shown on Sunday night on Channel 4 show Pile-Up: World's Biggest Crash Test.
Cameras were fitted into eight human-controlled robot cars and the lorry which veers across the central reservation into their path.
Carefully chosen civilian drivers were enlisted to take part in the experiment that gives them control of remote-controlled vehicles.
They were told that the purpose of the experiment was to enhance road safety, but they didn't know the vehicles they were operating remotely would be caught in the middle of a major collision.
After the crash, the drivers examine the cars they controlled and reflect on the realities of what could have happened if they had been behind the wheel, prompting them to reconsider their own driving habits.
At the same time, accident investigators arrive at the scene with no prior knowledge of what happened.
They search for clues and reconstruct the event with the help of a 3-D scan of the aftermath and meticulous forensic detective work.
The findings then go to Cranfield University in Bedfordshire, who study the effects of high-speed impacts away from a traditional lab-based environment, informing the design of future cars to maximise safety.
More than 90 cameras, go-pros and drones captured the crash and black boxes were fitted to the cars to record vehicle data and driver responses.
Moment cyclist 'vigilante' is hit by car at roundabout sending him crashing to the floor - but who's in the wrong?
Crash tests to help inform safer vehicle design usually take place in laboratories but the production team wanted to create a more real-world scenario.
David Twohig, an automotive engineering consultant who was involved in the project, said: "The beauty of a lab-based crash test is everything is controlled, everything is repeatable.
"But unfortunately, the real world is not a laboratory, and there are many, many variables. It might be the weather conditions. it might be the friction of the road surface. it might be temperature, humidity, the state of the driver, the mood of the driver.
"So I think that's the limitation of the lab. It's almost too good.
"The automobile has created a lot of freedom, but we have created this machine which kills people, and we have a duty to try and reduce its impact and improve safety now and in the future."
The show involved cars including a Toyota Prius, Porsche Boxster, an Audi A8 and a Volkswagen Golf GTI travelling at motorway speed when the lorry crashes into them.
Dan Chambers, executive producer at production company Blink Films, said: "As we all grapple with the emergence of automated vehicles and what they mean in the years ahead, this reminds us that there's so much more to learn about the human element of driving, which isn't going away anytime soon.
"The insights that this experiment gleans on driver behaviour and vehicle design could very well save lives in the future."

The motor then underwent a restoration and was hidden in a barn for over 35 years. After the owner's recent passing, his widowed wife has put the Ford up for sale at auctioneers Historics, of Iver, Bucks. The exceptionally rare vehicle sparked a bidding war and went under the hammer for a whopping £276,000. His 'pride and joy' was originally registered to the Ford Motor Company and one of just five cars used by Ford as a Press car. There were only 109 examples manufactured all together of the model which enjoyed huge rallying success in the late 70s and early 80s. Its rallying abilities were enhanced by the 1.8-liter Cosworth BDA (Belt Drive A-Type) engine which generated over 240bhp. The lightweight and nimble chassis and suspension of the Mk. II were carried over from its predecessor. Its responsive handling and balance, especially on loose gravel surfaces, made it a driver favourite thanks to its rear-wheel-drive setup. The white car with the small strip of bright and dark blue paint above the wheels has only travelled a total of 24,186 miles, or 500 miles annually on average. Iconic 1965 Ford Racer that starred in Top Gear is so rare only two in the world exist - but could be yours at auction The sought-after Ford has undergone a second revamp before the auction but has to be treated gently due to its low mileage. A Historics spokesperson said: "Beyond its rallying success, the Escort RS1800 Mk II remains a cherished car among enthusiasts and collectors. "Its combination of performance, history, and timeless design continues to captivate fans. "Restored and modified examples are frequently seen in classic car rallies and events, a testament to its enduring legacy. "The car sat in a barn for 35 years with the rebuilt engine sat on a pallet next to the RS1800. "Time had taken its toll and another restoration project was undertaken, with the plan to present the car in the best possible condition. "The registered keeper sadly passed away and the car is now registered in the name of his widow. "It runs beautifully although needs to be treated gently as it has only done less than 50 miles since the rebuild."

This new armoured vehicle offers a terrifying glimpse into the rapidly evolving nature of modern warfare. It is designed to take out dangerous flying drones while working alongside other tanks and infantry. As well as protecting troops from aerial threats, it can also tackle roadside bombs and other explosive devices. But unlike more conventional air defence systems, this new model uses futuristic tech to protect friendly forces from drone attacks. It can disable hostile drones using electromagnetic jamming tech and powerful lasers to eliminate threats. The vehicle also uses artificial intelligence-assisted tracking and threat identification. This allows it to quickly spot, identify and eliminate enemy drones and explosive devices. Its systems can also be used to help target helicopters and other flying threats. New footage has shown the high-tech tank in action, targeting a lone drone and rapidly zapping it out of the sky. The tank will use its jammers to disrupt the enemy drone before firing an intense laser blast to knock it out of action. Huge fleet of terrifying new Chinese 'tank boats' takes to water as Taiwan launches huge war drills With options for fixed, mobile, or portable settings, the tank can be deployed in versatile ways to protect urban areas, open spaces and convoys. Its design also removes the need for auxiliary power units - and makes stealthy operations easier. The tank is part of an effort by Turkey to reduce its reliance on foreign defence tech, website Interesting Engineering has reported. ALKA-KAPLAN is set to be officially shown at tech event IDEF 2025, the outlet added. It comes as the use of drones in modern warfare becomes increasingly widespread. Drones have been extensively used during the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has repeatedly pounded the war-torn nation with swarms of deadly drones. Violent drone and missile strikes have intensely bombarded Ukrainian cities - killing and wounding large numbers of civilians. The brutal attacks even destroyed a Kyiv kindergarten in recent days.
