Ayush has it in him to be a top-10 player: Coach

The Hindu13 hours ago

Having turned the corner by claiming his first major international title at the US Open on Monday, Ayush Shetty has emerged as the next big thing in Indian badminton.
The Karnataka shuttler, who trains at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA) here, has it in him to break into the world top-10, PPBA head coach Sagar Chopda said.
'Ayush's initial target was to be a top-25 player by the end of the year. With these kind of performances, this is definitely within his reach. In the long term, Ayush is a world top-10 player for sure. He has a very bright future,' Sagar told The Hindu on Monday.
Sagar explained that Ayush's self-belief has built steadily in recent months, after semifinal appearances in the Taipei Open and Orleans Masters.
Ayush's fine net game and fearless approach counts as his strengths, Sagar said. 'He has a good net game and a solid smash. With a good net game, he creates a lot of openings with a good tumble. And post that, his smashes are really, really sound. While a lot of players have to develop this, Ayush always had it in him. And he's not scared to hit. Even if he loses a point, it's okay with him,' Sagar said.
Sagar also said Ayush must continue to work on his defensive game - a key element in combating the world's best.
Born in Karkala, Ayush moved to Bengaluru as a pre-teen to pursue the sport seriously. He initially trained at i-SPORTS, before joining PPBA in 2021. 'A lot of credit goes to (i-SPORTS Founder and Head Coach) Krishna Kumar for shaping Ayush into what he is today,' Sagar said.
The task ahead for Sagar and other coaches is to mould Ayush into a consistent world-beater. 'All of us just have to keep working with him. This win is a good confidence booster for him going forward,' Sagar said.

Ex-Coach's Big Reveal: 'Jasprit Bumrah Playing 3 Tests In ENG Was Decided When...'

Last Updated: Former coach Soham Desai revealed that Jasprit Bumrah's limit of three Tests in England was set even before the 2025 Champions Trophy in February. Indian men's team's former strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai has revealed that Jasprit Bumrah's workload limit of only three Tests in England was decided months ago — even before the 2025 Champions Trophy in February-Match in Pakistan and the UAE. After being at his peak in the first four Tests, Bumrah picked up a serious back injury in the fifth match of India's tour of Australia in January. He missed the next three months of international cricket, including the Champions Trophy, though India won the tournament without him. He returned for the IPL and played all games bar the first few. But during the tournament, it was confirmed by chief selector Ajit Agarkar that he would only play three or four Tests. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill and Bumrah himself confirmed that number in the leadup to the first Test in Headingley. 'When Bumrah couldn't make it to the Champions Trophy, India's Future Tours Programme (FTP) was studied and it was decided that he will only play three Tests in England," Desai told The Times of India. Desai also explained how the team judges a player's workload and rest needs. 'There are two ways to analyse the workload. There is an objective way, where we collect data from wearable GPS devices. And then there is a subjective way of observing how the bowler is behaving. There are certain benchmarks set for each player as 'normal' behaviour when they are at peak performance," Desai said. 'If it is observed that a bowler is moving differently or lacks a bit of intensity even in simple tasks like conversations in the team bus, these become markers," he added. There's speculation on whether Bumrah would play the second Test in Edgbaston, given India are trailing the series 1-0. Although Indian assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has denied having made the decision, Desai said venue-specific plans are made much before the series and any change would also happen at least two days before the start of the match. Desai reveals why Bumrah got injured in Australia Desai also said Bumrah's injury in the fifth Test in Sydney had more to do with his excessive workload in the fourth game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. 'There is a set number of overs that is decided for Bumrah to bowl per Test. One can go five-seven overs beyond that limit, but what needs to be seen is how those extra overs are bowled. At the MCG in the previous Test series, he bowled those extra overs without much of a breather between spells. That caused a spike in his workload which triggered the back injury in Sydney," he said. Nasser Hussain On IND Bowler's Struggles: 'Couldn't Believe... He Kept Missing'

Last Updated: Nasser Hussain was shocked by Ravindra Jadeja's performance and lack of understanding of the pitch conditions in the first Test vs England. Nasser Hussain 'couldn't believe' how much Ravindra Jadeja struggled to get his plans right at Headingley in the first Test between India and England. The former English skipper thinks that the 36-year-old has 'plenty to ponder' ahead of the second game in Edgbaston which begins on Wednesday (July 2). Jadeja returned with just one wicket from the Test, despite bowling in conditions that suited his style. In comparison, England's much-criticised young tweaker Shoaib Bashir took three wickets. Hussain, writing in his column for the Daily Mail, assessed how Ben Duckett tackled him but Ben Stokes struggled. But then, he went on to mention that Jadeja didn't help himself by not using the rough available, saying that the experienced Indian spinner perhaps couldn't get over the sub-continent hangover. 'There is plenty for Jadeja to ponder as well," Hussain wrote. 'I could not believe how long it took him to change the way he bowled on the final day at Headingley. The rough wasn't extensive to the left-hander, but it was fairly wide and full and yet Jadeja bowled relatively straight to Duckett. He kept missing the rough." 'It is different in India when the pitches turn more, but in England, you have to look to find where that rough is and he didn't find it against Duckett. At tea, they must have had a chat because he bowled fuller and wider against Stokes. He made it a real challenge for Stokes, but it was too little, too late," he added. Hussain championed playing an additional spinner in Kuldeep Yadav but wondered how India fit him in. 'India could opt to play a second spinner at Edgbaston, with Kuldeep Yadav waiting in the wings," the former batter said. 'The left-arm wrist-spinner may give you more balls to hit, but he will get more bounce, and you will have to pick him because he spins it both ways. But the question for India i,s how do they get him in? It would leave them either a batsman or a seamer short. It will be fascinating to see what they do." India are 1-0 behind in the series. Kuldeep's inclusion could come at the cost of Shardul Thakur, with the all-rounder struggling for substantial impact with both bat and ball in the first Test.
