Kolkata gangrape case: ‘Red kurta, brown pants' – Police recovers CRUCIAL evidence seen in CCTV footage
Kolkata Gangrape Case: The investigation into the horrific alleged rape of a 21-year-old student inside South Calcutta Law College has taken a critical turn, as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police recovered key forensic evidence, including clothes worn by the main accused—referred to as 'M'—that matched those seen in CCTV footage, according to Anandabaazar Patrika. The Bengali daily refused to identify 'M' in thior reports.
The SIT also visited the homes of all three accused — Monojit Mishra, Jayeb, and Pramit — and collected multiple samples.
Kolkata Police officials revealed that a red kurta, brown trousers with six pockets, and black shorts were recovered from Kolkata gangrape prime accused 'M's residence.
These were the exact clothes the Kolkata gangrape case prime accused Monojit Mishra was seen wearing during the time of the incident, according to the Bengali media report citing the CCTV footage. The items have been sent for forensic analysis and are expected to play a vital role in corroborating the victim's account.
The SIT, initially comprising five officers and now expanded to nine, is led by Assistant Commissioner (South Suburbs) Pradeep Kumar Ghoshal. A female officer has also joined the probe. The team visited the homes of all three accused on Sunday, collecting clothing, electronic devices, and other physical evidence. Investigators are probing whether the accused used any other gadgets beyond their mobile phones.
According to ABP report, the south Kolkata law college gangrape survivor was taken back to the crime scene to help reconstruct the sequence of events.
The 21-year-old law student told officers that the sexual assault began inside the student union room of the south Kolkata law college, but escalated when she was dragged into the guard's room, where the rape occurred.
The gangrape survivor claimed to have suffered a head injury during the assault and alleged that one of the accused attempted to strike her with a hockey stick. The stick has since been recovered, and strands of torn hair were also found at the scene, now sent for DNA testing.
CCTV footage from 7:30 PM to 10:50 PM on 25 June has been collected. Investigators say the footage supports the survivor's claims and places the accused at the scene. The security guard, who allegedly failed to intervene, has also been arrested.
The gangrape survivor's family has stated they do not want a CBI probe at this stage and have expressed faith in the Kolkata Police investigation.
According to several local media reports, the arrested guard Pinaki Bandopadhyay has revealed to investigators that another female student was present at the union room throughout the day before the survivor was assaulted. Around 8:30 pm, that female student left the college.
On the day of the incident, Pinaki was assigned to the night shift, while another security guard had been on duty during the day shift, whose statement is also likely to be recorded as part of the investigation.
According to a News18 report, the police have prepared a list of 17 individuals who were present at the college after 4pm on the day of the incident. Two of them have been questioned by the SIT.

Over 90 families evicted, several houses bulldozed in Assam's latest eviction drive
More than 90 families were displaced by an eviction drive in Assam's Nalbari district on Monday, the second such eviction exercise in the state this month. According to Nalbari Deputy Commissioner Nibedan Das Patowary, the eviction was carried out to clear encroachment on 453 bighas of village grazing reserve (VGR) land in the Barkhetri revenue circle. Ahead of the eviction, the district administration had issued prohibitory orders under section 163 of the BNSS in the Bakrikuchi Reserve, disallowing the assembly of more than five people. The order cited a 'likelihood of breach of peace and tranquility' there, and in nearby areas, and the need to prevent attempts to 'thwart the successful completion of the eviction drive'. On Monday morning, 12 bulldozers and over 500 police personnel arrived at the site to carry out the eviction. 'There was no untoward incident. There are 93 families living here, and there were 319 houses and other built structures here. Since this is VGR land, it is a policy of the Revenue Department to clear such government lands. When we told them to vacate the area earlier, they went to the Gauhati High Court, but did not get relief there. So now, we gave them seven days' notice to vacate the area, and most people vacated their homes themselves on Sunday,' DC Patowary told The Indian Express. The affected families are Bengali-origin Muslims. Like in the case of the eviction drive that took place two weeks earlier in Goalpara district, where over 600 families were evicted from a wetland area, the affected families said they had moved to the area after their previous settlement was lost to river erosion. 'We have been living here for 28-30 years. We moved here in the 1980s from other parts of Barkhetri itself, like the Bhanganmari, Kurihamari, and Bhelengimari panchayats after land was lost to erosion. We occupy only around 80 bighas of land and live bare lives here, with most people working as daily labourers on farms,' said Fakar Uddin Ahmed (40), whose home was demolished on Monday. Apprehending an eviction in 2016, residents of the area had approached the Gauhati High Court against it, submitting that they had been in possession of the land since 1981 and that they had settled there because of river erosion. However, on June 18, a Gauhati High Court Bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi did not allow an extension of the interim order protecting them from eviction, stating that this is 'in view of the clear stand of the State that the land in question is VGR land'.

Kolkata gangrape case prime accused Monojit's murky past: ‘Pervert, history-sheeter, feared on campus, troublemaker'
Prime accused in the Kolkata law college gangrape case, Monojit Mishra, an alumnus of the same law college, reportedly wielded huge influence on the campus even after he graduated. According to a PTI report, Monojit led the college unit of the Trinamool College Chhatra Parishad, student wing of the ruling TMC in West Bengal, since 2017. The TMC, however, has distanced itself from Monojit, saying that he has no links with the party, and calling for strictest punishment for him in the gangrape case. According to an NDTV report, Monojit, also called 'Mango' by students in the law college, wielded massive clout on campus, to the extent that even teachers and office staff feared him. Monojit joined the Kolkata law college as an aspiring lawyer in 2007 and would have finished the course in 2012. During his time as a student there, he became involved in campus politics and dropped out of college before finishing his course after the TMC came to power in Bengal in 2011. The NDTV report said that Monojit took readmission in 2017 and graduated in 2022. Monojit was reportedly involved in a vandalism incident at the college's principal office in 2017. He officially did not hold a post in the college's TMC unit as it was dissolved by the party. But, unofficially, Monojit was still the 'student neta' as the college did not hold any student body polls since 2017, the report added. Reportedly, multiple complaints of harassment and molestation had been registered against him in the past, but no action was taken. Although Mishra was no longer a student, he started working on the campus on a temporary basis in 2023. Vice-principal Nayna Chatterji said that the college's governing body recruited him about 45 days ago on a contractual basis. 'TMC legislator Ashok Kumar Deb is the president of the governing body,' she said. Deb denied involvement in his recommendation, Hindustan Times reported. A Times of India report quoted students saying that Monojit often used pick-up lines for women on campus. Reportedly, he used his "tui amay biye korbi?" (Will you marry me?)" when he first approached 24-year-old survivor of the campus rape case. He would click pictures of female students, morph them, and circulate them on WhatsApp groups, the report said. These female students were gossiped about, made fun of, and body shamed by Monojit and his friends. Not just this, Monojit was feared so much in college that some students stopped attending classes because they were so 'scared of him", the TOI report said. In the aftermath of the RG Kar medical college and hospital rape and murder case of a student doctor, nationwide protests had broken out last year, including the campus where Monojit was a 'neta'. Monojit reportedly confronted some students who took part in the protests and questioned them. The report also said that Monojit allegedly threatened and also beat up some of them. According to students, he would openly say that nothing would happen to him as he had access to top politicians. Monojit's personal life was no different than his 'pervert' version on the law college campus. He has multiple cases registered against him, out of which he was out on bail for four of them. In 2019, he had allegedly ripped off the dress of a woman in South Calcutta Law College. The same year, he was accused of stealing music system, perfume, and spectacles from a friend's home in December. In 2022, a complaint was filed against him for molesting a woman in Swinhoe Lane. He was also accused of assaulting a man and was later arrested in April 2017. Monojit is also accused of beating up a college guard and damaging college property in a May 2024 case. According to a report published in The Telegraph, multiple FIRs have been filed against Monojit at Kalighat, Kasba, Alipore, Haridevpur, and Tollygunge police stations. Monojit's father is a temple priest in Kalighat, and his mother suffers from neurological issues, the NDTV report said. His father reportedly said that he had distanced himself from Monojit years ago due to his political activities and frequent fights. Neighbours claim Monojit (31), whose nickname is Papai, was a troublemaker who often got into drunken brawls, the NDTV report added. Two days after his son was arrested, along with three others, for raping and assaulting a 24-year-old female student of a law college in Kolkata, Monojit's father (name withheld on request), said he will accept the punishment given to his son with his head bowed. "We stay in a 6x8 ft room. We worked so hard and rose from the lower strata of society to make him a lawyer. It is hard to believe that my son has done it,' Monojit's father told The Indian Express. According to his father, they have been estranged for the last five years. 'We have not had any communication for the last five-six years. He is so busy. I live on my own money,' the report quoted Monojit's father as saying. A female student was allegedly gangraped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba on June 25. Four people, including Monojit Mishra who is the prime accused, and the college's security guard, have been arrested in connection with the case so far. Results of the medical examination conducted on the victim corroborated her gangrape allegation, a senior Kolkata Police officer told ANI. The victim, in her written complaint to the police, alleged that the security guard did not help her. "The security guard was arrested this morning after we found that his replies were incoherent. His presence at the college has been captured in the CCTV installed in the college," an officer told PTI. The incident at the law college brought back the horrific memories of the rape and murder of an intern inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata in August last year.
