Egypt launches 5th Check on Your Child campaign under universal insurance plan - Health

Al-Ahram Weekly25-05-2025
Egypt has launched the fifth phase of its Check on Your Child campaign, a free medical screening programme targeting more than 250,000 students in public schools across five governorates covered by the Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS).
The Egyptian Healthcare Authority (EHA), which is overseeing the programme, said the screenings will run through October and cover pupils entering kindergarten, sixth grade, and tenth grade in the 2025–26 academic year.
The campaign is being rolled out in Port Said, Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, and Suez—the first five governorates included in the UHIS since its gradual rollout began in 2018.
Students in all public education streams, including Al-Azhar and technical and sports schools, will be eligible.
The exams include general medical check-ups, eye and skin assessments, dental exams, and visual, hearing, and mental health impairments screenings.
Older students entering preparatory and secondary school will also be tested for Hepatitis C and undergo comprehensive blood tests and early screenings for chronic illnesses.
Students with health issues will be referred to UHIS-affiliated health centres and units for further testing and treatment, free of charge.
All results will be digitally stored in each student's electronic health record to allow for long-term monitoring through the Family Medicine Units.
Students can schedule appointments through the national hotline 15344.
EHA chairman Ahmed El-Sobky said the screenings are critical to supporting children's physical and mental development and detecting health problems early.
He added that the initiative aligns with broader government efforts to improve public health and invest in the country's younger generations.
As part of the UHIS expansion, the authority recently added two new hospitals in Dahab and Nuweiba in South Sinai.
Earlier this month, the Egyptian cabinet approved the system's rollout in Aswan, which will begin full operations on 1 July 2025—making it the sixth governorate to join the programme.
The UHIS aims to provide universal healthcare coverage for all Egyptians by 2030.

Cairo hosting trilateral talks on Gaza humanitarian aid, ceasefire - Foreign Affairs

Cairo is hosting delegations from Egypt, Qatar, and Israel for discussions on humanitarian aid for Gaza and efforts to secure a ceasefire, the Egyptian news channel Al-Qahera News reported on Tuesday. The tripartite talks are addressing the delivery of aid, the evacuation of patients, and the return of stranded individuals. The discussions are part of Egypt's ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Informed sources told the channel that the meetings have witnessed notable progress, with consensus reached on several humanitarian-related provisions within the proposed ceasefire agreement. The talks are scheduled to continue over two days. These consultations reflect Egypt's commitment to overcoming the obstacles hindering a comprehensive ceasefire and its determination to ensure the entry of sufficient and appropriate humanitarian assistance to residents of the strip, the sources added. On Monday, Al-Qahera News reported that Hassan Rashad, head of Egypt's General Intelligence Service, held talks on a Gaza ceasefire with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, alongside Palestinian and Israeli delegations. Over the past week, indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas resumed in the Qatari capital. Despite international momentum, the two sides remain at odds over key terms. A Palestinian source told AFP that Israel's insistence on maintaining a military presence in Gaza has stalled a proposed 60-day pause in fighting. On the other hand, an Israeli official, speaking to AFP, accused Hamas of deliberately blocking a deal, as the group rejected new Israeli demands to retain forces in over 40 percent of Gaza. Hamas accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of being the main obstacle. Since October 2023, Israel's war on Gaza has killed 57,680 Palestinians — the majority women and children — and injured 137,409 others, according to the strip's health ministry. Egypt, alongside Qatar and the United States, has been a key mediator in efforts to end the war, now entering its 21st month. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

OPEN// Madbouli: State established coastal barriers to protect Alexandria from sea level rise

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, July 14 ( MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli emphasized the importance of government efforts to protect Alexandria city from rising sea levels caused by climate change. He explained that the coastal barriers being constructed along the Alexandria Corniche are meant to safeguard the city and its beaches. Madbouli expressed happiness to be in Alexandria and highlighted key developmental projects presented during a meeting at the governorate headquarters. He praised a new initiative involving the private sector aimed at accelerating the inclusion of Alexandria Governorate in the Universal Health Insurance System by setting up advanced AI-equipped clinics to replace primary care units. He reviewed various infrastructure projects, including major road developments initiated by President Abdel Faffah El Sisi, public transport upgrades like the Abu Qir Metro and electric buses, and efforts to convert diesel buses to natural gas. Madbouli inspected completed and ongoing projects such as the development of the Corniche and critical roads, which are expected to alleviate long-standing traffic congestion. He visited specialized medical centers and noted their importance for Alexandria and neighboring governorates. He also mentioned two major directives from the President: "first, the renovation of residential buildings along the Corniche, with work already assigned to Arab Contractors; second, addressing the issue of deteriorating buildings. A plan is being prepared to replace unsafe properties with about 55,000 new housing units for residents of roughly 7,500 condemned buildings." Madbouli visited the emergency and control center for Alexandria's water and sewage system, praising its efficient response to recent storms. He concluded by urging the rapid completion of all ongoing projects to benefit the public as soon as possible. (MENA) M O H/R E E

Dozens of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire near Gaza aid site

Israeli forces shot and killed at least 31 Palestinians as they headed to an aid distribution site near Rafah on Saturday, while separate Israeli airstrikes killed at least 28 others, including four children, according to Palestinian officials and eyewitnesses. Hospital officials and witnesses said the 31 Palestinians were shot on their way to a distribution site operated by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation near Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said its field hospital received the largest number of casualties since it began operations over a year ago, with the vast majority of the more than 100 wounded having suffered gunshot wounds. 'All of those reported were trying to reach food distribution sites,' the ICRC said, noting 'the increasing frequency and scale of these alarming mass casualty incidents.' The Israeli military said it fired 'warning shots' at people it deemed to be 'acting suspiciously to prevent them from approaching,' adding that it was not aware of any casualties. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said no incident occurred near its sites, the Associated Press reported. From inside Nasser Hospital, Abdullah »l-Haddad, who suffered a leg injury, said he was 200 metres from the distribution point when an Israeli tank began firing on crowds of Palestinians. 'We were together, and they fired on us all at once,' Al-Haddad said. Another witness, Mohammed Jamal al-Sahloul, said the Israeli army had ordered them to go to the distribution site, then began shooting at them. Eyewitnesses, health officials, and UN personnel have said hundreds have been killed by Israeli fire while trying to access aid distribution points, which are located in closed military zones. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has denied any violence has occurred at or near its locations. Separately, Israeli airstrikes in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip killed 13 people, including four children, officials at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said. Another 15 people were killed in Khan Younis in the south of the strip, the Associated Press reported from Nasser Hospital. The violence comes as there appeared to be no breakthrough in ceasefire talks after two days of meetings between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The war has left most of Gaza's more than two million residents entirely dependent on foreign aid, with food security experts warning of an imminent famine. Israel blocked and then restricted the entry of aid after ending a ceasefire with Hamas in March. Aid agencies have said they face difficulties distributing humanitarian assistance due to restrictions imposed by Israeli forces and a breakdown in security that has led to widespread looting. According to a joint statement by UN aid agencies, the first fuel shipment entered Gaza this week after a 130-day interruption, amounting to 150,000 litres. The statement described the amount as 'minuscule' compared to what it called the 'fundamental pillar of survival in Gaza.'
