Two men killed in van crash along Pan Borneo Highway near Semanok Bridge
TATAU (June 14): Two men were killed in a single-vehicle crash along KM16 of the Pan Borneo Highway before the Semanok Bridge early this morning.
Tatau District Police Chief DSP Jame Reis said the incident occurred around 7.30am and involved a van travelling from Tatau towards Bintulu.
'Initial investigations suggest the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn multiple times.
'Both the driver and the passenger were thrown out of the van,' he said in a statement today.
Jame added that both victims, aged 24 and 18, of Chinese descent, were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from Tatau Health Clinic.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
He urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information regarding the incident, as it could cause unnecessary distress to the community.

BEIJING: The former Communist Party head of Tibet was handed a suspended death sentence on Wednesday (July 16) for taking bribes worth almost US$50 million, a court in China said. Wu was expelled from the party in December over "serious violations of discipline", a common euphemism in China for corruption. He was assigned to Tibet's department of education after graduating from university and rose through the ranks for about two decades. Johor customs seizes 3.8kg cannabis in drug smuggling busts
JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor Royal Malaysian Customs Department successfully intercepted two separate drug smuggling attempts, confiscating a total of 3.825kg of cannabis in operations conducted in Pontian and Batu Pahat. The first raid occurred on May 21 near Pekan Nanas, Pontian, where customs officers inspected two Pos Laju parcels. Inside, they discovered 130g and 97g of compressed plant material suspected to be cannabis. A man in his 40s, believed to be the courier, was arrested. Further checks led to the discovery of a black bag containing 55g of suspected cannabis, along with three smoking devices and a blender. The total estimated value of the seized items was RM22,860. Authorities also confiscated a motorcycle worth RM10,000. The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. In a second operation on June 5, the Marine Unit of the Batu Pahat Enforcement Branch intercepted an unregistered boat docked in a mangrove swamp near a ferry terminal. Officers found three compressed packages wrapped in Chinese tea packaging, containing 3.063kg of suspected cannabis with an estimated value of RM98,016. The boat, worth RM4,000, was also seized. 2 on motorcycle hurt in 4-vehicle crash at Sungai Besi Expressway

PETALING JAYA : Two men on a motorcycle were injured in an accident involving four vehicles on the Sungai Besi Expressway yesterday evening. Police said the driver of a car was using the Waze app on his mobile phone while driving on the right lane when he lost control of the vehicle, hit the divider, and crashed into the rear of another car in the middle lane. 'The airbags were deployed due to the impact, obscuring his (the first car driver's) vision. His car then veered to the left and hit a motorcycle and a second car,' said Kuala Lumpur traffic investigation and enforcement department chief Zamzuri Isa in a statement. He said the motorcycle rider and pillion rider, both 32, were admitted to Serdang Hospital where they are in a stable condition. The case is being investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving, which provides for up to five years' imprisonment and a fine from RM5,000 to RM15,000, upon conviction.
