Eid break brings Indonesian capital respite from notoriously polluted air
The Jakarta metropolitan area — home to about 31 million people — recorded 'good' and 'moderate' air on Thursday afternoon, with an air quality index reading between 22 and 76, according to data released by the Ministry of Environment.
The numbers showed a marked improvement for a city that regularly records above 100 AQI and 'unhealthy' levels of PM 2.5, a measurement of particulate matter — solid and liquid particles suspended in the air that can be inhaled and cause respiratory diseases.
'These 'good' and 'moderate' levels of air quality are possibly due to a drop in public activities during Eid holidays, as there has been a marked decrease in transportation and industrial activities in the city,' Edward Nixon Pakpahan, air quality protection and management director at the ministry, told Arab News.
'We are working to keep the air quality index for Jakarta metropolitan area below 100.'
Jakarta residents have long complained about the health risks posed by persistent air pollution from heavy traffic, industrial emissions and coal-fired power plants, which have consistently placed Jakarta among the 10 most polluted cities globally.
The streets of Jakarta and its satellite cities have been mostly empty since last weekend, after millions of people traveled back to their hometowns for Eid holidays.
Across the city, those who did not travel for Eid have been making the most of the rare good weather and clear skies.
'I love it. The sky is blue and the weather isn't miserable or scorching hot,' Jodi Baskoro, a 40-year-old office worker based in Jakarta, told Arab News.
'It's such great weather for those who are making their way around Jakarta to visit their families for Eid.'

Jazan: Strategic Gateway for Growth and Investment
Jazan Region is fast becoming a key economic and investment hub in Saudi Arabia. Its prime location along the Red Sea positions it as a vital commercial link between East and West, supporting the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Backed by strong government support and a series of transformative initiatives, Jazan is emerging as a leader in sustainable development across various sectors including economy, services, tourism, and investment. Jazan Region The region's economic foundation is built on its natural resources and dynamic geography. Jazan contributes significantly to the Kingdom's food security, producing around 45% of Saudi Arabia's total fish output. This makes it an attractive destination for investment in fisheries and seafood processing. Similarly, the livestock sector accounts for 8.7% of the national output, offering opportunities in feed production, veterinary pharmaceuticals, and meat processing. Agricultural Sector Jazan holds 20% of Saudi Arabia's arable land and is a key player in the agricultural sector, particularly in coffee production. The region boasts over 400,000 coffee trees, producing more than 1,000 tons of coffee annually from more than 2,000 farms. Its tropical climate also supports the cultivation of a wide range of fruits, yielding over 53,000 tons annually—positioning Jazan as a major contributor to agro-industrial opportunities. In addition to agriculture, the region is rich in mineral resources including limestone, basalt, marble, and salt. These resources create a solid foundation for investment in mining and materials-based industries, contributing further to the region's economic diversification. Jazan's Future Tourism plays a vital role in Jazan's development strategy. The region offers a unique mix of mountains, valleys, islands, hot springs, and pristine coastlines—making it one of the most promising tourist destinations in the Kingdom. Its cultural heritage, traditional markets, and historical landmarks enhance its appeal, drawing both domestic and international visitors. Eastern Province Emir hails efforts to enhance passenger experience at causeway
Saudi Gazette report DHAHRAN — The King Fahd Causeway, the strategic 25-kilometer bridge linking Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, has witnessed a historic surge in traffic, with over 33 million passengers recorded travelling in both directions throughout 2024 — marking the highest figures since the crossing opened nearly four decades ago. The milestone was highlighted during a briefing attended by Prince Saud bin Naif, emir of Eastern Province, who praised the tireless efforts of all teams working on the causeway. The emir commended both Saudi and Bahraini authorities, as well as the private sector partners, for their contributions in improving operational efficiency and elevating the travel experience. In a briefing, Prince Saud underscored the causeway's pivotal role in strengthening economic, social, and tourism ties between the two Gulf neighbours. He also noted the bridge's significance as a vital artery that continues to support regional connectivity and mutual prosperity. The King Fahd Causeway Authority reported that the introduction of advanced digital systems has drastically cut wait times. The E-JESR electronic platform, which enables pre-payment of toll fees, now processes more than half of all transactions. As a result, the average toll crossing time has dropped from 15 seconds to just 3 seconds, reducing peak travel time across the causeway to around 21 minutes. Traffic on the causeway traditionally spikes during summer vacations and festive periods such as Eid, underscoring its status as a key gateway for tourism and family visits. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to implementing more smart solutions aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and traveller convenience in the years ahead.
